SQUERL EDIT TO PREVENT CONFUSION: VGInsider never played the PC or Xbox 360 versions, voice chat IS available on the PC version, don't be sad.
Video Game Insider has a L4D First Look from Dec 27th, 2007.
Nothing new, except for one interesting fact..
"Cooperation and communication are thus essential in the health of the overall group, and this is achieved by a selection of hundreds of phrases on the PC or direct voice-chat over the Xbox Live headset. Naturally, we'd prefer the latter, and wonders why voice-chat won't be available for the PC version. "

What?! No voice chat! That's pretty crap... One of the reasons I have ordered a headset is for this game. God dammit...

Music is a huge part of L4D as are subtle sounds to provide cues. The other big reason is TRS have spent a huge amount of time on the in-game chat system.
Nothing annoys me more than playing on a public server and listening to some fking 10 year old or someone playing audio clips of borat down the mic.
If people really wanted to use voice-chat, they have vent/teamspeak.

In a fast paced game like this, it would be handy to be able to just say the commands... I know you can quickly select the voice command you need, but I bet it's pretty easy to pick the wrong one, especially when trying to defend yourself from so many enemies.
But I do understand your point. It would ruin the experience if some idiot was making lots of noise in voice chat etc.

"voice_enable 0" or mute? That would solve many problems.

This idea is an interesting twist on random enemy placement, but we need to see it in action before passing judgment.
They haven't played it, so it might be an assumption. That's what I think at least. :/ Not making this a server variable sounds like a rather bad decision to me.

Same here.

I actually am pleased with this. Now not only do I have an excuse for not having a mike, but I don't have to listen to ten year olds.

When you can easily mute people, there's absolutely no reason not to include the option. I'm pretty much 99% sure this was a misunderstanding on their part, with them assuming that since the pc version features the automated voice-commands that it somehow wouldn't feature voice chat. Silly on their part.

I would be pleased, but I ordered a mic... Unfortunate...
But actually, in hindsight that might not be too bad. Just a little bit of a disadvantage compared to the fact that you could be just saying what you need to rather than relying on a voice command thing.

I was thinking that too.

I'm sure I'll be using my headset with L4D, but in private with a group of semi-mature gamers.

i thought it was said originally that there would be voip as well as ingame voice, i think they would be very... extremely thick and dumb if they didnt have voip as an option. especially as people would just use ts/vent anyway, so what would be the point in not having the feature...
so i think this is a misunderstanding from vginsider

I edited the original post on this thread, but just so you all know: L4D will have voice chat on the PC version, VGInsider was mistaken.

Alltalk is a server variable that can be chosen to be turned on or off on all source games. sv_alltalk 0 or 1. So it'll be up for the servers' choosing most likely.

What about you can talk to the enemies when you're dead?
That way you could secretly talk strategy to mates when you're alive, and get all the negative vibes out to your opponents when you are no longer living?
=D
(Maybe you could map two inputs, just like text messages have)

I don't really trust these guys. Around the middle of the article they keep assuming TRS wouldn't know that player controlled zombie would be SMARTER than regular infected. Hell, even the Zombie Panic crew knew that!
