Here's the announcement in full (from http://www.valvesoftware.com/news.php?id=1401 ):

Valve Acquires Turtle Rock Studios
Leading Content and Technology Company Adds California Studio

Fresh off the success of The Orange Box, the 2007 game of the year award-winning collection of new games heralded as "the best value in gaming history," Valve Corporation announces the acquisition of Turtle Rock Studios, the Orange County-based development house behind one of 2008's most anticipated games, Left 4 Dead.

Valve was founded in 1996 and has grown to become one of the game industry's leading technology and content creators, with a portfolio of over 20 million games sold worldwide. The merger of the two companies extends Valve's development team and provides the company with a new studio in southern California.

Turtle Rock Studios' Left 4 Dead joins a growing list of Valve's game properties which includes the Half-Life, Counter-Strike, Team Fortress and Day of Defeat series of games as well as Portal, introduced as part of The Orange Box.

"We have been seeing very strong growth with Steam and Source, our content distribution and development platforms, up over 150% over the last 12 months. Given our expectations for Left 4 Dead and our long-standing relationships with members of the Turtle Rock team, this was an easy decision. It also gives us a base from which to expand our development activities in the Los Angeles area," said Gabe Newell, president of Valve.

"Left 4 Dead fills a long-standing demand gamers have had for a co-op first-person action experience, and it will also help Valve's expansion into the console market," added Doug Lombardi, Valve's VP of marketing.

"Valve has had great success bringing in projects and teams such as Team Fortress and Portal. As I spent time working and talking with the creators of those products over the past several years, it became clear that this was the right next step for myself, my colleagues at Turtle Rock, our customers, and our products," said Michael Booth, founder and CEO of Turtle Rock Studios. "We are excited to be a part of such a visionary and forward-thinking company."

Founded in 2002 by Michael Booth, Turtle Rock Studios is the creator of Left 4 Dead, named one 2008's most wanted titles by many of today's leading game-enthusiast publications and Web sites.

Gonna happen sooner or later. :-p This could either hurt or speed up the release of L4D. It could slow them down by moving to the new studio. But, they have a new studio so they could make the game faster. They also have more funding and extra help now from Valve.

GlobalEnjoi: they are trying on clothes, and the guys on the other end of the video are going "that looks nice, but it makes your butt look HUGE"
ShrubberyJSC: LOL!
nemesisurvivorleon: lol
nemesisurvivorleon walks into the video conference
ShrubberyJSC: OMG, that was funneh, I'll save that.
nemesisurvivorleon takes pictures of the big butt

So do we say L4D is being created by TRS or Valve?

Great news, just goes to show how much confidence Valve has in L4D.

I bet Gabe Newells kicking back in his chair with a big fat cigar and dollar signs in his eyes!

Yay this means there was no new info because they were in the process of being acquired!!

If so this could be a very good thing, all things point to release sooner rather then later my friends!!!

I can see it now.. everyone waiting until midnight for them to release L4D on steam. Only for people to realize the timezone differences and spam the steampowered forums so much that they have to shut them down for a while. It'll be TF2 all over again.. eww.

01-10-2008, 08:56 AM
Well i think this is very very very bad news cause i could mean that Valve wants to put L4D in his next orange box of late 2008 with Half life episode3 and force us to wait for 10 months!!!!!!!! i really hope i'm wrong...............

I don't see anything but good coming from this, it gives them the resources of Valve to work with and a bit more name recognition, so why worry? (Watch as I eat my words with delays on top)

Summer, pfft... That's like 2 - 4 months of L4D, then it dies when StarCraft 2 releases.

"The merger of the two companies extends Valve's development team and provides the company with a new studio in southern California."
Uhhh... dude that means that it provides VALVE with a NEW DEVELOPMENT STUDIO (Turtle Rock) in Southern California, not that Valve is providing TURTLE ROCK with a NEW BUILDING for them to work in in Southern Califoria. :D hahaha

I sent an e-mail inquiring as to how the acquisition of TRS might affect production on L4D, whether it would be delayed, or sped up, and got a response almost immediately. Below is the response:
-------------------------------------------------- ----

Hi Alex,

Thanks for your mail.

We're very excited to get Left 4 Dead into customers' hands. The
collaboration between Valve and TRS was already very tight before the
acquisition, so this shouldn't present any change to the ship date, etc.

Cheers
