WASHINGTON – Opposed to the war from the start, President Barack Obama on Tuesday formally ended the U.S. combat role in Iraq as promised, declaring: "It is time to turn the page." He said the nation's most urgent priority must be fixing its own economy.

In advance excerpts of his prime-time speech to the nation, Obama said the United States "has paid a huge price" to give Iraqis the chance to shape their future. That toll has included more than 4,400 dead, tens of thousands of troops wounded and hundreds of billions of dollars spent since March 2003.

"Ending this war is not only in Iraq's interest — it is in our own," Obama said.

Yet for all the finality, the war is not over, and the American sacrifice will continue.

Obama is keeping up to 50,000 troops in Iraq for support and counterterrorism training, and the last forces are not due to leave until the end of 2011 at the latest. Still, he sought to mark Aug. 31, 2010, as a milestone in one of the defining chapters in recent American history.

In a telling sign of the domestic troubles weighing on the U.S., Obama reserved part of his war address to campaign for his efforts to revitalize the economy.

Thread titled "The Iraq war is over".

Then I read this:

Yet for all the finality, the war is not over, and the American sacrifice will continue.

Obama is keeping up to 50,000 troops in Iraq for support and counterterrorism training, and the last forces are not due to leave until the end of 2011 at the latest.

The end of the Iraq war was not announced and is not over.

The end of the American combat mission in Iraq is over. There's a difference.

Still, a bloody good move I say and about damn time.

We're still there and there will still be combat, but the last combat brigade has left. All this really means is that the United States isn't controlling things over there anymore, they are instead leaving about 50,000 troops there to help the Iraq government get things under control. We'll probably have troops there for a long time after this.
Hell, we still have troops stationed in Germany.

Obama has been doing a lot but unfortunately everything he HAS done has been shadowed by stupid shit like Mosques, Oil Leaks, etc. Also, he was a little slow at getting some of his big bills passed because the Republicans are turtling in order to make him look bad next election. Republicans veto everything, Obama looks like he isn't getting anything done, retards of the US blame Obama, Republicans (even though being 65% of the problem) benefit from it.

EDIT: Now that we've cleaned up George Bush's massive mistake, lets move onto his OTHER massive mistake, shall we?

Exactly.

Fighting in Iraq continues, but it will no longer be planned attacks by army officials, it will be spontaneous.

Considering his "vacations" have been work related I don't think you can hold that against him.

During 2 terms as President, Bush spent all or of part of 487 days at Camp David on retreats and made 77 trips to his Crawford Ranch, in Texas, where he spent all or part of 490 days.
The total number of days of vacation or retreat President Bush took while in office over a period of 8 years was 977 days, or 32% of his total time in office. And since Obama's "vacations" were all less than a week long, I would say he's working hard.

Bush was an awful president, we all know that and no one can argue that he was.

I'd love to take 3 vacations a year.

And really, what has Obama done since he's been in office besides swatting a fly? No one knows. I got it. He's covering up 9/11 with his black power.

Cleaning up Bush's mess. Think about it, he had to go to all the countries our relationship was ruined with and fix them, he was elected into a recession and into a war, and he's also only one person. He really has little power. Sure he can submit bills, but if they are vetoed then they can't do much can they? One of Them said it well earlier.

^ That.

With an upcoming election, and a FAIL two party system, the republicans will veto every bill they can just to make sure nothing gets done so they make the democrats look bad and get themselves more seats.

It would be the same the other way around too because the politicians are more worried about getting re-elected, and getting their friends elected, than actually doing something with the power they have in the positions they are elected to do.

So what has Obama done? Not much, we did almost have healthcare reform, among other things that he has tried to get passed. Our whole system is really just a clusterfuck full of people who don't want to get anything done aside from collecting pay checks... and, of course, making sure their friends collect paychecks too.

You do, It's called weekends. Obama's vacations were no more than 8 days. Three 8-day vacations compared to an average workingman's 2-days every week plus holidays is hardly a lot of time off.

This is my problem with the whole situation.

And the one guy that could have fixed it all was Ron Paul. Lol.
