edit: Ok, this is a small map, I'm making to test my skills on, since it's the first time I'm mapping something larger as well. (Started two months ago.)

the models arnt out of place a t all, ok the trees look a bit dodgy but im gonna sort that (put concrete/soil round the base)
and whats wrong with the lighting?

arsis, nice map for a first attempt! Looks like your map is still fullbright though, it will look much better with light added. ;) Oh and the textures are looking a bit out of place in pic #6 and #7, but that doesn't matter, if you made it just for learning Hammer. :)

Some people need to learn how to give constructive criticism rather than trying to be fking ecool. And if you have to be a dick, post some pics of your map first.
Anyway...
Good to see a few here are starting maps, maybe one day we'll get a new section in the forums for mapping? Would help pass the time I suppose.

hey,
Im not the greatest mapper but i mapped for Brain Bread Source for a few months. One thing is, (you dont have to), try just making the layout of the map first, then add your models in. When laying out, just pick a one texture for the floor , one for the walls, and what ever else you need. Then when you got your layout done, when you compile, you dont have to site and wait to see what the layout is going to look like. Anyways, keep going, add some arches and other things. Go into some nicely made coutner strike source maps and just look to see what they did. Like having the side-walk off the ground by like a unit.
This adds a feeling to your road and such. Keep looking at interlopers man. Learn how to add doors, and move onto displacments, and onto the vertex tool.

You need to add "-engine ep1" to the SDK's launch options to acces your pre OB games. Alternativley you can also download the SDK's new beta (http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Source_SDK_Release_Notes) that has a drop list to switch between engine versions.

One thing is, (you dont have to), try just making the layout of the map first, then add your models in.
I read that many people work that way and only use the orange/grey developer textures as placeholder in the beginning. I tried to do it, but then quickly reverted to adding a whole room, working on it to my satisfaction, then adding another. :P
But I'm sure it would be more efficient to create the map as a whole before texturing or putting models in it! I should try doing that in the future...
What game is best to map for until L4D come out? Source v1 or v2?
I started with Episode 2, because the map is going to be dark and EP2 has those nice dynamic shadows coming from your flashlight. ^^ Also, L4D will have all of the Source engine's latest features as well.

pshh, i wouldnt even let my m8s play it if i didnt think it was any good...
and i have actually started over as i'm learning to optimize proply and focus on lay outs rather then props/details at the beggining:P

Skeetles, I know you were trying to offer constructive criticism, but you probably should've mentioned it. If you re-read that, it's pretty plain that it's easy to take hostile if you're sensitive to criticism. Also, not mentioning that it's meant to be constructive kinda makes you look like a troll. :-\
Pucifer, if Skeetles knows his stuff you should take some of his criticism on board then, too. It's looking better than what I can do, but he has a point with some of his comments. (I mean that in a totally constructively criticising way.)
Good work otherwise, I look forward to new pictures and the finished product.

It would be hilarious and stupid to play zm_lila_panic in left 4 dead once. That would be a great mini-level addon to some random campaign. Mostly just to laugh at.
I do UT3 mapping. I haven't done much lately, but I'll make something and show it to you.

ah i didnt see that until now. thanks. yeh im just learning how to use the architecture aspect of hammer as of now. i will move onto lighting and props later.

eaxactly if skeetles maybe worded it better i would of taken it on board, it just seemed like more of a dig then critisism to me.

I saw it and totally agree with you. But to some people who are more sensitive I can see how he missed it.
I've said all I need to. Both sides have a point, now chillax and make friends, this arguement is past it's expiry and is aging like milk.
