View Full Version : Character attributes

I feel that there should be at least some difference between the 4 survivors, variable physical skills would help a lot in the game, the physical builds of the characters are very different although there really is no difference between them.
Some of my ideas on the matter would go like this:
Zoey- Her small frame allows her to be very agile and nimble, being able to outrun most infected (except the Hunter)
Francis- His large build allows him to withstand more hits. (More HP)
Bill-His army training and war experience have honed his skills with firearms. (Better accuaracy)
Louis- He's about average so I'd consider him an "all round" character (The comical value of playing as "that black guy" is also included :3)
Also, I have used the search bar and I've typed titles similar to this and haven't found anything, but if there are topics like this, "You dumb shit" comments are welcome. XD
Now, if you have a comment or an opinion on the matter please post it here, that's what forums are for after all. c:

this no RPG mate just leave as it is

Well I wouldn't say it would make it an RPG, it's kind of just... A little obvious and would add a little more realism, I mean an army vet obviously knows how to use a gun better than say a teenage girl.

So what if I joined and I liked playing as Francis for example, except he was already taken by someone else. Would I have to play as someone else that didn't suit my playing style or could we have 4 characters playing that look exactly the same (aka identical quadruplets)?

Well being in a city full with crazy psychotic rabies infected people who want nothing more to plunge to kill you, I think you'd have to learn to adapt, just like you have to do with the characters.
Example: Francis is taken and you get say Zoey.
You: "Oh no, I wanted Francis :c.... Hey this extra speed is good for dodging hunters and other infected attacks! =D"

No no no. Bad idea. If the characters is suppose to be different like that, then it could not be random who you get to play with. It would be unfair, and ppl would hate it. Then we'll have to be able to choose for our self, and then we'll see like 4 Bills and so on. Stupid.

I respect all your opinions but, I don't think people would care that much, I mean people are so excited about this game, I'm sure this small feature wouldn't ruin this game, also not everyone would go Bill, people who like to get right into the action would go Francis, people who like to be able to fall back withought the danger of being caught would go Zoey.

That sounds like a good idea honestly. It's not enough to make anything be too much or too litle of an advantage so I don't see why not.

you have to remember that these are only advantages so they don't really do anything but make the game easier.or make it so they're for effective in their abilities on normal and less effective on harder difficulties.

Yeah they should do the same with CS:Source too because they're ALL THE SAME.

co0rnddog, you must know that with advantages come disadvantages, obviously Francis's heavy build would affect his speed.
Also, Atari, change is nice y'know?

Not if it's change for change's sake, no.
Kevin

Change for the sake of spicing the game up a bit and increasing the need for the aspect of co-op, yes.

Well I'll reserve judgement for when I've played the game, but I'm pretty sure Valve know what they're doing and they would've added it if they thought it'd be better.

i don't see how it'd be a positive thing for cooperative play. because of the limited number of survivors and not being able to play two of the same person, it'd restrict people into classes they may not want to play far too often. while it's a good thing to learn and get used to several classes in a game, it's never good to be forced into them. it'd also be generally bad for the idea the game is based on, to work as a team and stick together as one unit.
what good would zoey's speed be if it'd only encourage her player to run ahead of the group? the same goes for slowness, it'd only slow down the group.
Kevin

Yeah, it most likely wouldn't be added, it was just an idea I thought would be slightly cooler and I just wanted some opinions.

Obviously a good team cares for each other, if someone's low on health and there are no health items you're going to wait on them right? Also, Zoey's speed could be in combat as she can move fast and dodge most of the infected.
[E] Damn, forgot about Edit, double post won't happen again.

I guess it might be cool, but if there's only one certain way to get to a place and Zoey dies.. well then you're fucked.
I think it's fine just the way it is, it'll just complicate things a bit more.
And no double posting, please, just edit your last post ^_^

nah tf2's nailed class based play, left 4 dead is fine as it is.
and tbh if they ended up making the characters have different skills it would turn me against the game completly.

I think this would be easy to make as a mod... but then I don't know much about mod.
Waterboy2go

This would be good for a mod, but for the game itself, no. The devs want to keep it balanced and fair, and where nobody waits for an hour in spectator to play their favorite character.

well we've been over this A LOT, but it's not a realistic game. and if they ahd different characteristics people would wanna switch characters and be different ppl and stuff. it's just better to have everything the same

You dumb shit
Left 4 Dead seems to me to be a game that is both fun to play and has the least chance possible for people to get bitchy and ruin the game for others. Valve seem to have been working along these lines - TF2 is incredibly well balanced and its cartoony and fun graphics mean that anyone bitching and moaning and taking the game too seriously just looks like a dickhole. Likewise with Left 4 Dead the probablity of anyone bitching about what survivor they got is more-or-less eliminated by them being the same.

hey jerk you put you instead of your!!!thats unexceptible fatty!...kiddin^^
I'd welcome the idea. It doesn't seem like it would hurt gameplay too much.

If people would be whiners about this sort of thing, I'd just tell to fuck off and play single player so they may choose their character exactly. These differences all have their advantages and disadvantages, but it would make for some interesting gameplay.
Ah, well. I guess I'm impartial.

Maybe make a character creator for deathmatch or whatever they are going to call it and you can edit your character when you create it only once and pick which attribute you want to upgrade (accuracy, speed, ETC.) (once and only one stat too) and pick a gender (male or female) the would have the same stats but the male can carry heavier stuff while the female is a little shorter is a tiny bit faster than the male by like 5% and keep the Campaign characters the same as they are now.

mabye not, because some people could want to play as that certain person and not care that their the same. that could still cause some drawbacks. Ex. "I want to be bill because he's cool and a vietnam veteran, but wait, someone else just picked him...since i cant be him im just going to fuck up that game for everybody else to teach them a lesson....kajsdhfkahsdlf".
*edit*
They could also have 4 swat unit skins with 4 different voices so if someone has a character someone wants they can just be a generic character. *(they have gas masks. and when they talk its through a walkie talkie.)

You can probably make a miniature server side mod for this.
I've seen similar things done in other games too.
No reason to ruin L4D for the rest of us just to add this.
