View Full Version : What about... other maptypes?

Alright, so everybody's talking new weapons, new skins, all that jazz. But what makes the meat of the game? Short of new Boss Infected (I want my Screecher, Valve!), the only thing that could really change the game would be the addition of maps that don't work like the old maps.

(For the record, I searched for this, and if there really were topics about this for like I had assumed, your search function sucks since my generic search 'maptype' and 'map type' got: Search failed: no results.)

I mean, as it stands, as far as we know, this is how the four Movies works: There are five maps, seperated by safe rooms, that serve as loading rooms and breaks from the carnage (unless you let a tank in there, in which case, shame on you. Actually, that should be an Achievement for the Infected). For the first four maps, it's simply get from A>B, with little 'crescendo events' sprinkled in where you can't go anywhere and you need to protect yourselves for a certain ammount of time.

And the fifth map is the 'finale', where you need to stay alive until help arrives (at least, that's what it's like in Farmhouse and Hospital, who knows about the others. Plane starts to take off, but the back of it is stuck open and you need to keep the Infected out of the plane as it starts to take off slowly, anyone?)

But I mean, surely not all the maps that people will make, or Valve will release afterwards can be like this. That would get really stale, really fast. So, being that we are the number 1 largest community, I think we should think up some ideas. Well, maybe, being a mapmaker myself I'm just trying to steal ideas, but whatever.

I only have two ideas I can really think of, Stronghold and VIP. Stronghold- which I already have a map ready for, just need the Left 4 Dead SDK and the textures and the tools to make it work, since it SHOULD be able to work,- which is generally a huge crescendo/finale, where you need to hide, or barricade yourselfs in an area, or any number or combination of things like that, for a certain ammount of time before escaping. Pretty much Zombie Master, really.

And VIP, where a fifth teammate accompanies the Survivors- an NPC, that is. An NPC that has a bearing to the story of the map, that you need to keep alive, escort to the end of the map. With Left 4 Dead's smart AI, this would probably be really cool. You could even give him a weapon.

I've been wondering if your on the outside and you could close the door without being on the inside of a safehouse.

That would be rather interesting, actually.. if you've got Infected on your ass, like, a lot of them, and your teammates are in the safe room, do you close the door from the outside and sacrifice yourself or let the Infected in? But then again, it IS a safe room, it probably has Pipe Bombs in it, which you can throw out the door and close.

Stronghold has been discussed, numerous times, albeit under a different name.

A VIP map would be so-so. The VIP would have to be an attractive female, she could even have a cure for the virus if that matters... But otherwise I don't see a fundamental difference between escorting a survivor, and escorting three. Essentially that's what the campaign is... I mean, would the VIP do something of value, or is 'she' a bot... Is she limited to a single pistol or no weapons at all? Because fundamentally, it sounds like campaign with an extra bot player. At least until you flesh out the details. Of your own idea. Which was your onus before suggesting it. 0.o

hmmmm 3 survivors use ANY weapon and the V.I.P. gets to only use 1 pistol lol

hmm a map idea eh? LOL something at the top of my head 1 Huge huge Finally ur in a Dome Pritty Big But Theres no way out i guess ? . ( hey its a player made map do as u like) Then out of no wear Walls all over the place just start smashing open and Income Hundreds upon Hundreds of Zombies U just have to keep fighting them off Untill Backup arives and Then u escape with them xD.....BUT out of nowear the Vehical gets swarmed and Tunred Over .. u and ur team Craw out...To find urselves Sourunded By HUndreds more of zombies And Must Escape The Town WHY.. becuase be 4 the vehial got tunred opver On the raido was announced there Bombimg that part oif the city theres no saving it .. ( lol i just jkee adding along as i type)

Sorry, it never occured to me that I never did mention that the VIP- being the Very Important Person- can't die or it's game over. I agree, simply having a fifth AI companion would be lame.

Mm... give her a pistol for good measure. And it has to be a Female, since another male would be a bit much.

Hmm... Well I'll thrown in my two cents.

I for one don't think the Source AI is capable or even preferable for a VIP bot in a game like L4D. So it should definitely be a player for many reasons one of which is that if it's a bot, it's most likely the team will work around it, instead of it working with the team. Unless of course it goes through a radical change in AI mechanics surpassing everything we've ever seen in a game, or even ever.

I still think there has to be something more to it. But for now, the VIP should be someone important to the overall mythology of L4D. You know, to allow for some story-telling L4D style. Same how the characters say little tid-bits and the environment tells you a little bit of the story, the VIP should to.

But anyways, I think a stronghold type map would turn out really well if done correctly, or you could even base a whole mod off of l4d on it.

Yeah, if you made a V.I.P. game by your self YOU have to be the V.I.P. no matter what unless people joined and wanted to be that person.

Another thing, if they ever did a stronghold map with gun emplacements... I sure hope they rig a PKM or M249 in the game.

I probably couln't stand the endless 'vaporitzation' that the mini-gun does. Though from a technical perspective, it means less raggies but still. Death anims and ragdolls look cool.

I'll probably never use the mini gun unless forced to because I have the luck of Louis on mounted weapons in every game i play on. I'll stick it to my shotty.

Using the minigun and using a auto-shotty for backup is a good combination :D

xD if ur going up a moutin will it have be like all sided hill type ?? if so would the Mini Gun be able to turn 360 degrees ?

it's more like a 90 degree gun, it would be better if it could turn a 360 though

ahh yes it prabably be fun that way as well have the gunner facing his Area hes able to covr then have the team beghind him defeding that sid eof the hil
