View Full Version : This game looks too fast paced

I plan on getting this for the 360 but watching the recent E3 vids I was very displeased at the pace the players were moving. It looks like they move too fast, like sprint was permanantly on or something. I'm worried this game is looking more like some arcade style, run n gun shooter fest than what is supposed to be a survival horror FPS.

Let me clarify: I'm only concerned about player speed/movement. To me it looks like the characters are running around on steroids, like it was Unreal Tournament. I feel this is wrong, that this eliminates or severly diminishes any horror/scare factor in the game whatsoever. How is any gamer going to be scared for his life when he's just blitzing around, guns blazing into any Infected horde he comes across?

The atmosphere and setting of the game looks phenomenal, but who's going to appreciate it, who is going to be scared or put in suspsense about what's around the next bend when you can just pop in and out from that corner in a second? I'm not saying tone down the game speed completely so the Infected are slow, shuffling zombies, just the player speed.

Maybe there can be a compromise here, like some sprint/run function, something similar to Half Life 2, which certainly wasn't as fast paced as Left 4 Dead looks now. Hopefully I'm wrong, maybe it'll be that fast for the PC version but I really hope it will be toned down considerably for the console.

Edit: Seriously, thumbsticks will fail? Let's not start a console war guys. -_-

Run all you like, I'm just saying the game just looks too fast paced from what I've seen so far. It looks too arcadey, and I can imagine the bunny hopping Halo players getting onto this <.<

I'm just saying, maybe the characters can just walk quickly, then sprint if needed?

They probably will, though they will throw it away quickly - Because you need teamwork to even survive for 5 min. The game automaticly sorts the newbs from the serious gamers - what game does that. By itself?! Marvelous! XD

This has been discussed before, I believe.

It looks like they move too fast, like sprint was permanantly on or something. I'm worried this game is looking more like some arcade style, run n gun shooter fest than what is supposed to be a survival horror FPS.

Survivors move fast when they are at full health and there could be some adreneline in play, explanation-wise.

I feel this is wrong, that this eliminates or severly diminishes any horror/scare factor in the game whatsoever. How is any gamer going to be scared for his life when he's just blitzing around, guns blazing into any Infected horde he comes across?

L4D is a run-and-gun game as the entire point of the game is clearing a path through the infected to safety, but don't make the mistake of thinking that means its automatically not a survival horror. L4D is scary due to intensity, being swarmed is the horror and obviously, theres lots of survival.
You can be scared for your life and still be guns-a-blazing.

Maybe there can be a compromise here, like some sprint/run function, something similar to Half Life 2, which certainly wasn't as fast paced as Left 4 Dead looks now.

There can't be, slowing down the players would simply hinder survivors and adding a sprint function would just add another factor they have to worry themselves about along with their health, ammo, friends, friend's health, friend's ammuniton, ect.

If it is any consolation, you slow down as you take damage.

I can understand where you are coming from. Survival horror games deliberately rely on slow movement speed and even botched controls (Resident Evil) to create an atmosphere of helplessness and suspense.

With a multiplayer game, though, I think it's a wiser choice to emphasize the feeling of excitement, the adrenaline rush, rather than the feeling of horror and the movement speed plays into that. You really need the freedom of movement for those hectic situations. I think that is the better choice for a multiplayer game, too, because something scary is only scary that often.

edit: Steve beat me to it, kinda. I agree.

as I know it now you slow down as you take damage right? so by no means does that mean you'll be sprinting the entire time after long enough you won't notice, you might wish you were going faster lol getting chased down by zombies

360. getting. game. for. Xbox 360. I highly doubt we'll have access to PC mods and such. Although there may be hope there as well, as Epic Games is promising that for Unreal Tournament 3, it's possible Valve can follow suit.

The survival horror comes from the fact that throughout the maps, boss infected are trying to ambush and kill you. It also comes from the fact that there are hundreds of infected ready to swarm you and bash your face in. If you notice in the videos, the run speed isn't fast enough for people to just run away. They DO get swarmed.

I don't think this game was ever intended to be a survival horror, at least not in the same sense as Resident Evil. This game IS going for a more arcade style. Resident Evil has lots of zombies, and very little ammo. This game has shitloads of zombies, and shitloads of ammo. I think you're meant to have an all-out zombie slaughter, as opposed to the ammo conservation thing.

Wow, this has been discussed to death, use the search function.

Players can walk.

Player speed is fine. It's not as if it's at all possible to run the entire course of the map. You lose speed as your hit. You lose overall speed once you've lost X amount of health.

The speed we normally see survivors in is in their peak condition. They're much slower when injured.

Frankly the game would seem retarded if players weren't able to run that fast at all, considering they are running for their lives. (Yet they're always outdone by Infected speed)

It's also stupid to think people run and gun in this game. Have you not seen ANY gameplay videos? That's never happened, players always have a tendency to stick together, and once a horde comes in they stop in that area until they're done with.

than what is supposed to be a survival horror FPS.

The infected run and are numerous.

You complete scenarios in around an hour.

Your handgun has unlimited ammo.

How are any of these things at all consistent with survival horror?

EDIT: and of course you get accepting right after I make my point. Goddamnit.

The first statements are consistent. I don't mind the handgun having unlimited ammo, that's fine with me. It's just that this game seems to have less horror, more shoot 'em up factors in it. I guess that's fine but I still think it draws away from immersion in the game itself.

Jesus123

Hah, I like how people complain about something they haven't experienced.

Im pretty sure what is drawing away the immersion in the game itself is the fact you cant play it, and your only watching videos of it. Once you get to play it yourself, you'll probably be complaining that they dont run fast enough...

-Edit

And this is only referring to the people who havent actually got to play it yet. If you have, feel free to state your opinion.

How is watching a game video and pushing a button and watching a game any different? Just because he has not played the game does not mean his concern is not valid. The speed seems okay to me, but I get what he is saying; being able to have more control would heighten the sense of realism and immersion into the game. I would not mind a normal pace and a sprint button.

i understand where your coming from but in some games the waited feel of the charecters isnt ok.example-jackie estcado moved like a lead brick because they purposely made it feel real and not cinematic in the darkness.ethan thomas moved like a track runner in condemend becase the game was very shockfest and the abilty to move was needed(like left 4 dead it was like an interactive movie).some games can pull the feel off with out fast running but others rely on being quick so its scary but easy to control a bad situation

Because opinions change after you have experienced it personally, especially with games. Videos can only offer so much as far as experience with it goes. If you only get into the game depth as far as "pushing buttons and watching a video" with no emotional attachment, you're missing a big part of what this game is going to be about.

Not to mention, as big as the campaigns are, slower speeds with occasional sprinting would greatly increase how long it would take to complete it. Not only would you occasionally run into a wall of an infected horde that would stop you completely, but you would also be giving the infected an even greater advantage over your team.

have to admit that at full health it is a tiny bit too fast, but probably nothing i'd mention if there weren't a thread about it. ;)

being slower to take in the surroundings is kind of a moot point, since you'll be seeing the same levels quite a lot. they are going for a movie theme though, so i'm sure they'll put a few things in the game that make it less run run run run run run.
