View Full Version : Infinite Infected

Is there a definite answer on the subject of infinite enemies? I know the AI director spawns them all procedurally and whatnot, but is there a cap or something? A total per level?
Also, after clearing a room will it remain empty? Can infected spawn in rooms you have already cleared and gone past?

Probably not (http://www.left4dead411.com/forums/index.php?action=vthread&forum=2&topic=2715&page=0#msg69578)

I think that The Director has the ability to spawn from all areas which The Survivors can't see. It has to seem as if the Infected come from somewhere unknown, so I'm not sure if the cleared rooms get written off by some script, that keeps The Director from spawning Infected in those. It's a good question, though.

I'm just worried that after clearing a hall or something we'll be reloading and bandaging and then some zombies will pop out of a room we just cleared.
As for the infinite thing, i guess it's really more a concern about where they're coming from, less about the actual numbers. It would be nice to be able to literally clear a level though. I enjoy doing crazy things like that.

Would be cool. If The Director can't spawn Infected in cleared rooms, he would still be able to send them at you from further back your path. Example: You've come into the unfinished floor of the Hospital. When you are at the end of the floor The Director will still send Infected at you from where you entered because it probably won't count as specific room. Bottom line: The Director will keep sending Infected at you until you escape or die.

i dont think you have to worry about them s pawning in a room you just cleared. there was a preview a long time ago that said one of the bugs they spoted was a zombie spawning inside an ambulance they had just walked past that had been empty. they were told it was a bug that was being worked on! so no worrys there.
as far as i know there are infinate zombies though and theres always the possibility that zombies will have wandered back into an area you cleared after you've left it. so coming back through the map could lead you into more trouble.

I believe- don't quote me on this- that Infected can spawn from areas behind you that would have a plausible entrance route- for example, say you walk enter a building, and turn right to go down a corridor. You pass two rooms to your right, and two to the left. You clear them out. Now, some Infected can come from the entrance to the building, but they won't spawn in the rooms.

Last time i checked, there was a cap of I believe 40 enemies (not bosses) that can be on screen at any one time. That, and the fact that the director spawns in relation to the player, leads me to believe that no infected can spawn behind you.

Infected can definitely spawn behind you, we've seen it happen before. On top of that, in the Developer Walkthrough Video 1, at the tail-end of the gas station scene, there's definitely more than 40 Infected there. I'd wager about 70 are there.

I'll put an estimate around 45 - 50 on the headcount then (For the ones hidden by the light).

You can clear every room. Infected don't spawn in rooms, so that doesn't make any sense what the above people have said.
It's been said multiple times in interviews that there are people who clear every room and take longer... Why would he say this if it's impossible to clear every room?
While there are infected in the rooms when the Director populates the map, they're the slow, fumbling around kind... Infected won't spawn from there.

So what would you consider this?

I know its a garage, its still a "room" and they are spawning out of it.

No they're not. That garage is fully enter-able, it has a doorway which leads outside. They spawn outside, come inside. Voila.
My point exactly was they won't spawn out of closets, backs of trucks or in rooms. They 90% of the time spawn somewhere the players can't go, and then climb a fence, over a wall or something, and run at the players. They won't spawn in the middle of a hallway when you're not looking.
10% of the time they're spotted around the map as the AI director 'populates'
And finally, I more or less actually meant room than garage. So yes, it's fully possible to clear every room.
When you kill the stragglers, or the ones spotted around to populate, that room is clear. The 'hordes' which spawn on the other sides of walls and fences, and other unreachable spots will not stop until they're all dead. So they don't exactly count as clearing material, because they'll more or less suicide rush you.

I heard they just spawn out of the Survivor's view. I don't think its always in some impossible to reach space.

on the demo it was kinda strange that the infected spawn when the survivols aproach a garage, and dam! you could see how the AI Director multiply lots of the infected (srry for my eanglish)

??? How does the fact that there are shitloads of zombies on screen at once lead you to believe that the director won't spawn zombies behind you???? WHAT LOGIC IS THAT?!?!?! I DON'T UNDERSTAND IT!!!

Well, this has turned out to be an interesting thread. I think in summary we've decided there ARE infinite infected, but they're very unlikely to spawn in areas you've just recently cleared. Certainly none will magically appear in front of you.
I guess that answers my question.
