This is pure speculation, but the 31st lands on a friday and L4D releases the following tuesday. I'm thinking it would be a great marketing move on valve's part to have a free weekend type dealie from the 31st to the 3rd of November and then end it on the day of actual release --- the 4th, a Tuesday. Give everyone a taste and then take it away suddenly leaving everyone craving for more. Since i won't be doing anything on Halloween I really hope this happens.

I do, but if that is the case I just wish the beta would start earlier since I want it NAO.

I think This idea is Pro. Perhaps lilsamurijoe is actually part of Valve and hinting to us that there going to do that :O!!

I voted yes. As long as it don't delay the game in anyway.

I would pre order from steam, but I have this thing about owning the box and having an actual disk for games like L4D. Exceptions would be a title like Day of Defeat for 10 bucks.

I prefer steam games over CD's entirely due to the fact that downloads can't be scratched and stop working. That and they can't be lost unless you get your steam account stolen.

Yes that's right joe, the longevity on Steam games is much higher than CDs imo.

This idea is ok, but im pretty sure thiis won't go down. This game has 20 maps on release,4 scenarios, so most would beat the game then not buy it.
My point is someone will be like, well I just want to play through the game.
Meaning steam would lose money because of a guy who just wanted to play through it so he wouldn't have to buy it.
The only way I see this working is if you preorder the game on steam then you get the prerelease.

Of course, they'll put EVERYTHING into the free weekend.

I'm pretty sure I heard they were going to have a Free Weekend of Left 4 Dead like 4 months back. I doubt they gave up on that idea.

Sounds like a pretty nice idea. And BTW, if you buy the CD of a game that's on Steam, you don't need the CD to play it anymore. I'd rather buy the game with the box and all, it's a bit more ''fun & rewarding'' IMO. :P

Awww dude, I was gonna post this idea in September, closer to Halloween! You beat me to it. =)
Anyway, yeah, I think it would be an absolutely killer idea of a tie-in! Somehow, someway, it will be criminal if Valve doesn't take advantage of the Halloween season falling right around the release.

If anything it will be a selected beta, that is, they hand pick the people.
If your talking about a pre-order beta, that's different. I totally believe that there will be a TF2-esque pre-order beta for L4D.

Or, they could make a TF2 -like limited beta for pre-orderers.
Both are great ideas, IMO.

Terrible idea. Why wouldn't they just release the full game on Halloween then?
Threads like these make me hate people.

If they wait until Halloween, I will be pissed. I want them to open the gates of the damned long before then. 5 days before launch?? Bah, I demand at least 1 month of beta before release, that means Oct 5th.
:D
We will not be seeing any beta until steam cloud is released anyway, I would look for that then hope for some l4d action.
