are there crosshairs in the game or do you just have to do your best to aim at the middle of your screen with no indicator?

There are crosshairs, the four lines that expand or shrink based on accuracy just like Counter-Strike (at least for now). In the pics we had the hud disabled since it's still under development.

4 lines? Aww... can you change the crosshair to a different style?

Like squerl said, the hud is still under development, so we may see a change in crosshair style (there will be crosshairs though, dont worry). We disabled the hud for the pictures and boy was it hard to play without it.

I think if you take a look at the picture on page 8:

You'll notice that squerl has already died and is spectating...
However, I think I might be on the ground dying at that point.

:O Im gonna imagine what squerel is thinking at the moment...
I spent quite a bit of time staring at the other characters up close (even the dudes) because they looked so good

are going to be able to aim with your gun like in red orchestra with the sights? the way you would really try and aim in real life?

Nope. Crosshairs just like Counter Strike.

And for future questions about it KashMunni, people usually refer to those as "iron sights"

Out of curiousity is there a reason why they left out iron sights?
I heard somewhere that its because not every is a trained soldier who uses iron sights, but theres a vietnam vet. And children have enough sense to use ironsights also.
So I assume the only weapon with a "zoom" function be it iron sight or scope is the hunting rifle right?
I like ironsights because of the animations, you can tell someone is trying to aim when you see him staring down the sights, it looks cool thats all. Otherwise they're useless in video games, for the most part they impair to much of your vision, like a huge chunk of the screen is taken away, and in BF2, the ironsight itself sucked because the pointer (the thing in the center of the circle) would cover up the target most of the time)

I like Iron sights as well, hopefully they have em' Not just because they look cool but I think they help

They want the game to be more realistic. True the guy is a vietnam vet, but that would make it unfair for the others. I for one am excited about no ironsights. Like your going to have time to aim for headshots anyway, unless your the sniper.

One thing that I'm hoping is that during the game when you look at the survivor, it will look awsome when you see the recoil on the gun whenever the character shoots. Nothing Choppy, all smooth and realistic thats all I want same goes for the zombies, Every detail has to be perfect

If you're being attacked by zombies and boss zombies that are faster than you... you wont have time to use iron sights lol

Yeah, the only gun with a zoom is the hunting rifle, and when you're using it you feel VERY vulnerable. Ironsights on other weapons would slow the pace of the game/make you die a lot more.

Headshots are still a good thing and the M16 and even Uzi (to a lesser extent) can handle them pretty well with bursts of fire. Not to mention the satisfaction of earning merits for getting a good number in one game.

i play red orchestra and so ive become a huge fan of iron sights and so this news makes me sad. im hoping that at the very least i can change the look and color of my crosshairs (a red dot so i can write it off as a laser sight)
but what of the rest of the hud, i understand that its incomplete but did they discuss any of their goals for it? will it display ammo/health? any other information? hopefully its as minimal as possible as i for one do not walk around with a cross in the center of my vision and a numbered percentage representing my current health in the bottom corner of my field of vision.

Most people are taking to this no ironsights thing, just like TF2 isnt having grenades...

well for me, games with crosshairs seem arcadeish. if youve ever played RO then you know how awesome actually having to aim your weapon to be accurate is. if you havent played it, i HIGHLY recommend it.
however, as i type this it comes to mind that head shots are not a necessity and so spray and pray tactics are probably more useful against a horde of zombies..
ill just have to see how well it works with the gameplay.

yeah but hip shooting when going for accuracy isnt very effective. but if the pace is as fast as your preview hints taking the time to actually bring up the gun and aim using the iron sights probably would get you killed fast. so ill use the cross hairs and hope that it doesnt take me out of the mood the rest of the game is attempting to place me in. at the very least the cross hair should be changeable to a dot instead of the counterstrike "+"

I play this all the time and it does have iron sights. Although it isn't much use since you're aiming at someone who is invisible.

if youre interested in playing a great game with iron sights id try out Red Orchestra Ost Front
every so often they have a free weekend, but the game itself is only around 20 bucks if i remember correctly.

guy doesnt have the best aim in the world but he shows what iron sights are.
this kind of aiming would be great in a zombie game, but if L4D is as fast paced as it is hip shooting with a crosshair is probably the only way to really survive it. im not sure how useful the hunting rifle is going to be really, i hope there are senarios where you can pick off zombies from a rooftop from a pretty large distance.. otherwise i dont see it being picked often.... although the ability to not use the scope with the rifle is very interesting.

theyve updated a few times with free content.. i cant disclose anything from the upcoming update except to say its going to be big.
its my personal all time favorite shooter soon to be tied with L4D (realistic shooter should be its own genre)

sir monster a lot of people do not like RO because it is realistic to the point of tedium. Being absolutely hopeless without iron sites is not the source feel nor will work in such a fast paced game as left4dead. There is no time to camp in left4dead, you are on the move constantly being ambushed by a horde of zombies.

i know this. as stated before i would love to play a zombie game where headshots and aim required using iron sights (which is why i still hold some hope that NMRiH is finished) but this game is too fast for it. which is fine by me, this will be the standard by which all new coop survival horrors are judged imo, and its a fine new gameplay style to be adapted to other horror titles.

No game is too fast for ironsights, its a feature... the doesn't mean they HAVE to use it. I played NS, a mod for HL- it had a scope on many of the guns that you coudln't use because the game was too fast paced, I ended up dying many times because the enemy was fast and far, always complaining why "The gun has a scope why cant I use it" Ironsighting doesn't slow you down one bit, if you want to hit though it'd probably better to go slower or not at all.

youve never shot a gun in real life have you?
last time i checked iron sights is the only REAL way to aim a gun.... unless they have crosshair retina implants.
No game is too fast for ironsights, its a feature... the doesn't mean they HAVE to use it
ah but to aim using them you would have to bring the weapon up and take the time to aim.. from the descriptions of frog and squerl its hard enough with it the way it is, those few precious seconds so that you can deliver an arguably more well aimed shot in the end is probably not worth it. and yes if it were in it would be up to the players to use. but if it wasnt practical, no one would use it, and if no one is going to use it, why take the time (time we arent willing to wait through as a community) putting it in.

Fortunately, somewhere in the mutation process, frogopi (plural of frogopus of course) have developed just this feature.

With out doubt iron sights help. I play(ed) alot of Americas Army, and while most people take to just spray and pray, i tend to use them even if they slow me down a bit. Because they allow me better accuracy, and accuracy counts.
I think it'd be nice to have the feature, it's not like you have to crawl when you're using them, you can usualy move at a light jog and still shoot pretty straight. None the less, i don't much care as long as there is alot of zombie slaughtering!
