I couldn't wait for L4D, so I made it myself

I made this very simple overhead shooter that has zombies and an AI director just like l4d. The AI director was pretty easy to make, but sometimes zombies appear in walls. This is something I made in 1 hour with a single 5 or 10 minute break. Of course it looks awful, but I must play L4D now, and it's not exactly out yet.

You start in the northwest corner of a "city", and you have to get to one of the other corners where the finale is. Most of the "city" is made up of black walls, and the graphics are REALLY bad, but it's a start for 1 hour of work. You just run around the city, and zombies spawn randomly like they do in L4D with the AI director. I made my own version of the AI Director, and you can see variables it's using in the top left of the screen. Also, this is NOT a virus, even though some of you would think so -.-

I give it a 1/10 right now because of the graphics, but it has replay value with the director, and if you guys think this 1 hour of work is a good start, I can make graphics that are actually good, and I could add boss monsters, etc. too.

If you guys want, I'll make it better. I'm no artist, so I'd appreciate if you guys made graphics for me. That is, if you want to help.

Turtle Rock might not like this, but I'll just put up ads of the real game if I release this to the bigger public. I'll also include awesome graphics and everything l4d has before that final release.

Also, you can see how my version of the director works. There's a tension level for zombie spawning amounts, a battlecounter that keeps the tension from being intense forever or boring forever, and there's a time to exit when you find the finale (the big green square) I tossed in the uzi, shotgun, and a few sounds and now I can play.

Also, I REALLY want to complete this and make it a giant ad for Left 4 Dead. Most game sites keep mentioning how L4D isn't well known at all. Free games can change that; especially free games with good graphics.

Hey guys i got an idea, make the levels smaller and add checkpoints with health and guns, like go to the green which teleports you to a room that has guns and health in it, then another tele to the next part

EDIT: i also got an idea for the tank, wehn you enter the finale, 2 of them spawns, they look bigger and have more health, and they could (don't know if its possible) have a secondary fire of which they could throw a large rock everyone once in a while

illegal, lol, I actually payed for the registration. It's only $20 now, but back in 2003 when I had gamemaker version 5, I had to pay only $15.

This was made with gamemaker version 7, and I guess you guys can't run it unless you register. Of course, you can run the executable.

image_angle is a registered function just so you know, and that's probably what's causing the error. If you pay $20 to register, it won't appear anymore, but I don't expect anyone to just register all of the sudden.

Heh, pretty neat. For an hour's work it's very good. It gets old pretty fast, but what can you expect?
Try beating it on hard, I almost did it once. The trick is to step in and out of the finale zone then fend off the small increase in zombies. whenever you're in the finale zone, the tension skyrockets. You have to get out of the finale before the tension maxes out and spawns too many zombies. Each time you're in the finale zone, the &quot;pick up time&quot; increases, but it never decreases, so just keep going in and out until the pick up time goes all the way.

You should understand that I'm obsessed with AI programming. The only reason I wouldn't have simple physics AND great AI is if I get sick of this like my other projects. Since it's l4d, probably won't happen.

Of course, some of the stuff in this little demo I've done in primitive ways, so I might have to redo some things which will take a half hour maybe.

Just think about this everyone: I know how to make l4d into an overhead shooter with ai and most physics completely intact, but I can't make the graphics for it.

I NEED AN ARTIST!!!!!! this is my biggest problem, I'm a terrible artist, so I need someone else to do all the graphics. Remember, whoever wants to do the graphics, I'd demand a ton of stuff from you, so just be ready to crank out things constantly. I understand if you have work, school etc. of course.

Yes, I REALLY want to make it online. I'll study things and learn how. By the time I know how to put it online, I should have it at least a quarter done I hope.
Also, sending me random cool graphics sounds very nice.

It fits with one of my original ideas: get completely random graphics from people and make a game out of it.

Although, this time the graphics are all L4D related, yay!

About a 3d fps left 4 dead...
That would be like making a dumbed-down version of l4d, and it's purpose is no longer to promote the real game. I wanted to make a 2d top-down shooter that is very high quality itself, but since it's only 2d people will want to see the real 3d l4d even more.

Finally, I wanted our promo game to be just like l4d with no new modes or anything. The levels would be different though, but that's the only thing.

yea yea we can do both

FPSC since it has online it would be the better choice for the game
still working on getting teams and such
but i think that it only allow deathmatch style battles

so I think the only way to make it co-op would be to make it single player
but single player doesnt go online (as far as i know)
and if we do that then we have to work on getting more than one person in the game

Gamemaker CAN go online! I just have to rtfm (read the f***ing manual) and I'll know how to take this online. I'll rtfm. Since you people seem to want to play online right away, I'll crank out something immediately, but first I'd like to know what features from l4d you want the most.

Features that will be available anyway:
-ai director
-zombie enemies
-up to 4 player co-op (online of course, survivors only until all infected are finished)
-pistol, uzi, and shotgun
-simple HUD (showing only health and ammo at the bottom of the screen)

Features you should choose:
-only 1 boss monster will be included in the first version
-the theme of the level (city, farm, the beach even)
-which level 2 weapon to include (only 1 at first)

boss monsters:
-boomer
-smoker
-tank
-hunter
-witch (I choose this one, as long as someone here will record or find a scary screaming sound)

level 2 weapons:
-auto shotgun
-assault rifle
-hunting rifle (I choose this one because it's a unique sniper weapon, and it gives me an excuse to make awesome gore effects where body parts go flying at 100 mph)

Themes:
-whatever you can think of. Must be a real-world area. (I choose a city of course)

It would be very easy to make the others, I know how to so easily. All I have to do for the boomer is add some variables and tell all the zombies to track a certain player as their only target instead of the nearest one.

For the hunter, he'd just rush in, attack, and run away. I can even use my waypoint based pathfinding.

The smoker, I could just make a single sprite that redraws itself into a long line, and the end of it could be a separate sprite to show the end of the tongue. Then, the player being attacked would just use a standing animation.

Of course, the tank would be easier to program, and he would take less time to make. I could even have a car in there if someone gives me car graphics (top-down view), and the tank could hit it if he walks into it.

I still need a top-down sprite for the player and the tank and the backgrounds. I don't want the first version to have black walls and a faceless character.

EDIT I'm rtfming right now, and since tomorrow I have off of work, I can probably start right away. Of course, first I have to be distracted by my wii, martial arts, piano playing, annoying my cat, and acting weird. Then, after I've wasted at least 10 hours, I can start. Of course I'll get hungry and take an &quot;extended break&quot; to eat for 2 hours. and so on and so forth...

Hey, everyone! Do you really want to see me complete this? I could include everything from left 4 dead and online gameplay. The online would take some troubleshooting, but it it would be the top priority.

First, I want to make the ai director and zombies (done now), next I want to have better graphics, fix small things, and have online. Yes, online right away because I'll be adding new stuff all the time, and everyone will keep getting new versions, so you'll be able to play everyone here at l4d411 throughout development! Also, tell me about bugs and problems when you play.

I know the current game is horrible but interesting with the ai director, but that's why I want to fix problems and get better graphics first. If someone could get me graphics, please get them! I'm no artist, so unless you get good graphics, good graphics will never be in the game.

One hint I have to make it better is to make the camera a little bit more zoomed in so people can see a little bit of detail on characters and guns. And also to make it more of an isometric view rather than completely top down, this would allow the game to show a large area and still look close up and personal.

I like isometric views too. Do you have an extremely detailed character complete with 8 sprites for 8 different directions? I don't, so I have to leave it this way. It would take forever to make 8 different sprites when I'm only an ok artist. Isometric rules, it also requires me to spend a ton of time doing things! I'm not that good of an artist!

Although, I'd be glad to make it isometric as soon as I have version 1.0 done.
Version 1.0 will have all characters, bosses, weapons, maps, and extra things done, even online will work well.

Version 1.1 will be to fix any online problems.
Version 1.2 will have those isometric graphics.

It would take forever to make it isometric, but when the game is finished I'll have forever to do them. Unless of course, you happen to have spare isometric sprites lying around?
