Just seen a new video for Hellgate : London, looks quite cool and has zombies!!
Not the L4D type though more the slow shambling sort, looks like fun all the same, but I doubt it`ll beat the game we`re here for!!

http://www.gametrailers.com/player.php?id=20428&ty pe=wmv (http://www.gametrailers.com/player.php?id=20428&type=wmv) - normal resolution

http://www.gametrailers.com/player.php?id=20427&ty pe=wmv (http://www.gametrailers.com/player.php?id=20427&type=wmv) - high definition

Unfortunately its not out till November, so its not like it`ll substitue L4D until thats released. Hopefully L4D will come out before and we wont need Hellgate : London. Although I`ll probably still buy it anyway! lol!

Im not impressed by this game. I have to wonder though, why don't the guns just shoot bullets? Or something that travels faster than a thrown baseball.

There's some interesting technology behind this game. If I recall correctly, the game procedurally creates levels - meaning that there is an infinite supply of gameplay scenarios. An amazing feat. Imagine how that could be put to use in L4D 2!

Negative criticism, but with a reason. In my books, worthwhile input - unlike others!
The weapon you must be referring to looked like a type of grenade launcher I think.
If you watch later in the trailer there are clearly other types of guns with different firing styles.

At last someone, who sees the potential in this title! I didnt know that Quotidius.
I think it could be quite interesting, what with the RPG element and all.
I thought the street levels looked quite impressive and atmospheric, also there were large amounts of enemies on the screen at once, which always makes for a good blast!

I imagine the `unrealism` of the weapons is whats putting off the die hard L4D fans.
But this is suppoesed to be an RPG, with spells etc.
Comparing this to L4D is like comparing apples and pears. Similar, but different.
I`m still more interested in L4D, but I`m not relegating Hellgate to the scrapyard just yet - not till I`ve played a demo of it at least. This could be like Oblivion, but better, if done right.

If it turns out to be crap, then what the heck? We still got L4D!

I might get it once I have Vista/DX10 working on my other computer. And once nVidia releases some damn DX10 SLi drivers, cuz right now I have a $400 DX10 card sitting in my computer doing nothing and one running at old school DX9. It runs DX10 too right? Atleast thats what I heard.

I didnt know that Quotidius.

Yes, it's pretty fascinating. Imagine the algorithms required to pull that off! Not only does the engine have to procedurally create levels, it also has to manage enemy placement and positioning, balance, model usage, lighting, optimization... as I said, an amazing feat.

It runs DX10 too right? Atleast thats what I heard.

What card is it? If it's of the 8x00 series, it supports DX10.

quoti is indeed correct in this. This game has amazing potential. I dont see how it looks crap. Its different, is that why perhaps?

Ive seen hellgate london for a while now, RPG's have never really appealed to me unless they appear to be really really good, otherwise i just dont play them. Main reason: Boredom. Things like Assassins Creed (in development) and oblivion however have immense gameplay, and this is something i look for. Having magical abilities etc has never really drawn me into a game but from the reviews, it seems that hellgate london is going to be ever so slightly different.

To be honest, I'm not that certain the game will be anything but decent. What really has me is the engine.

Sometimes I wish I could pry open the innards of games and analyze the code. I always do this with maps. After I've had a few days of fun with L4D, I'll decompile one of the maps and take a look at the scripting. To be frank, I'm not entirely sure the AI director requires no map-specific scripting whatsoever. How then does it differentiate, for example, between unreachable areas (Imagine 20 or so zombies spawning on a rooftop, completely unable to assail you) and "valid" areas? The most obvious answer to me is that they use a simple brush that marks an area as valid and suitable for zombies.

All areas must follow standard Zombie Safety procedures.

Looks good, probs worth playing the demo if they release one.

The magic abilities thing is popping up in alot of games lately. BioShock (think its called) for 360 and PC has the same kind of magical theme, which also looks pretty good imo

It looks like crap because the graphics are decent, and suck compared to every other dx10 game. and there's not a gun that uses real projectiles. It just feels like they've over done the thing. Like one gun shoots flames, the other green gunk, lightning, sounds waves I assume because they're wierd rings...

What card is it? If it's of the 8x00 series, it supports DX10.

Talking about the game

Bioshock doesnt have magic, sure you could call it magic because he spouts flames but theres a backstory behind it, its like call the force magic...

Needless to say though, i love the art direction for templars.

In bioshock its not actually magic, rather genetic modifications that give people varied abilities

Yes, such as "summon a horde of hornets" and "manipulate security systems". Surely microevolution can account for that? :p

Doesn't TF2 use a random map creator thing like the one in here?

This game looks very different and I see some potential fun it. I think that the fact the guns are so different brings creativity and freshness to it.

not precisely microevolution, from what I've seen is that the people of the city in bioshock have discovered how to manipulate genes, therefore creating the "magical" abilities in the game via injections of a variety of modifications

Thus explaining and warranting the usage if the term "microevolution". An incorrect usage, actually, since I doubt minor changes to one's alleles could accomodate for such obvious mutations.
Still... hornets? :p

Doesn't TF2 use a random map creator thing like the one in here?

The system featured in TF2 can only be found in one map, Hydro, and is far less complex. The system TF2 employs is quite simple, and is succintly summarised here (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=163472&site=pcg).
Hellgate, on the other hand, creates entire levels, complete with lighting, texturing and NPC placement, through the use of complex algorithms.
Of course, this doesn't necessarily equate that the levels featured in HG will be anything but decent; I read about this in an issue of PCG almost 1-2 years ago. For all we know, they might've scrapped it.

Guys has anyone actually looked into this?

Firstly, its not an FPS, it's an RPG with FPS elements. It combines guns and swords.

Secondly It's the creators of Diablo and Diablo 2, it looks amazing. It takes all the best things from diablo:

-Drop Randomisation (prefixes, e.g Amazing Broadsword, stupendous nailgun), players over level 10 will look different, not like in WoW where everyone has the same gear.
-Enemy difficulty dependant on player level and no. of players in group (40 players at once!)
-Level Randomisation (possibly achieved through a structured set of rules and a form of evolutionary algorithm?)
-Skill Trees (except this time encouraging more diverse builds)
-Sockets!
-Roguelikes!

The intro movie is immense: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLXzKwQbYbc, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLXzKwQbYbc) i highly recommend downloading it as this is pretty rubbish quality, I especially recommend looking up the templar videos to prove that it is firstly an RPG and has close combat rather than guns all the time.

I'm sorry but Diablo 2 is addictive as hell and proves how an old 2d game compared to even the latest releases still proves more of a challenge and offers more enjoyment. I expect this game to be incredibly addictive. If you haven't tried diablo 2, at least play that before you slag HG:L off. The story in D2 is exceptionally good for something played out over 6 movies and the multiplayer kicks ass and is brilliant fun when played with a group of friends. If they can make something that is still brilliant years after they release it and draws my attention then this deserves a decent look.

Plus they recently announced they expect a summer release :P

Edit: Alright, just watched some of it, it's alright I guess. Not my thing though.

Lazers woot....oh wait i completed Quake 4 already.

Game has no appeal to me, watching that trailer bored me. Obviously just watching someone prance about firing off different weapons isnt entirely the game, so ill just have to wait for a demo to judge it properly.

As an RPG i just dont believe this will work, boredom after 2 hours?

I believe the key to its addictiveness will lie as diablo 2 did in the multiplayer and interaction with other people, lets face it WoW is a rubbish game on face value, I slogged my way from level 40 to 60 on my own hating it, but when I was with my friends it was a great game, its the communal aspect of these games that makes them more fun. (note: I did hate WoW by teh end, its just a grind fest, you do the same instances over and over wasting your life away to get a silly purple item) Imagine playing it now with massive demons and 40 of you all running around the same instance, people getting annihilated by this thing when it hits them and then you all standing round its corpse for a group screenshot once its dead. Thats the fun part, the group. Just as Left 4 Dead is trying to go for, it's all about working as a group.

I personally don't like any kind of rpg so I don't really like this game but random level creation stuff would be cool in l4d. I think they really should do that for l4d 2 because that would make the game so much more interesting.
EDIT: Not that I'm saying it isn't already interesting.

Hello there!

I don't know if any of you ever played Hellgate: London. I did and I liked it a lot! It was some kind of variety in my gaming routine... But the servers shut down in Europe and US, the singleplayer mode is boring and so... sh*t!

If you also feel like that, sign this petition (http://www.petitiononline.com/hgleuna/petition-sign.html). It's the last sign of hope to bring Hellgate back to Europe/US.

Edit: Isn't this thread meant to be in the section "games"?

This is also one helluva ressurection you pulled off. 2007 man. 2007!!

But yeah the game idea never really interested me at all. I think it's just ironic as hell that it's set in London yet nobody in London can play it. Kinda defeats the object.

Pretty average game from the opinions I got, and nothing to be really mourned.

Yes, many people complaint about many things. But all in all I liked it very much. And sure I'm not the only one! And for those is this info about the petition.

I didn't want to open a new thread for this, so my 2007-ressurection should be excused! ;)
