View Full Version : Splitscreen on pc - There is a chance?
Keptron

As the title say, there is a chance as Squerl found the .cfg; I think it would be like this:
Player 1 - Keyboard
Player 2 - Gamepad
At least it could work, but player 2 would have a problem if he isn't good with gamepad. So it would be like 2 players with same pc/game playing together.

Damn! You guys are smart.
then we gonna have to cram our hands on a small keyboard. what two mice?
They way I think would be playing with a Gamepad ( player 2 ) and one Keyboard (player 1)
Thread already made bud
One that I saw was closed and didn't said the gamepad/keyboard thing :p
Last edit:
Gonna let all the night downloading L4D, now sleep time.

Player 2 - Gamepad

Managed to splitscreen on PC, but can currently only control one side.

If you look at the keyboard options there appears to be room for tabs, could possibly be extra configs for more players?

To get the splitscreen I started up a dedicated server with the settings;
sv_allow_lobby_connect_only 0
sv_tags "Server Browser Join Enabled"
sv_unreserve
to allow joining through console, and then connected through console with the command; "connect_splitscreen 192.168.1.100:27015 2"

(btw sorry if this has already been posted, I couldn't find it anywhere)

Gamepads would work but I personally hate FPS on gamepads. The problem is windows can not have 2 mouses and have the work independently. What happens is windows will just average the two mouse movement (aka mouse1 moves left mouse2 moves right cursor stays in the center). For a while I had a gaming mouse, a wacom mouse/pen, and an apple mouse (don't ask). So I found that out. Apparently Windows 7 will allow the use of multiple input cursors independently (aka multitouch). But maybe valve will figure out something or other. I've got some PC controllers ready for my xbox friends when they come over anyhow.

Couldn't a driver/application type thing be released to support multiple inputs?
Also if I wanted a friend to play, could I stick to keyboard/mouse and a friend use a 360 pad? Or would I need to switch to 360 pad too?
I don't own any PC compatible pads currently, which sucks.

I've gotten it to work by doing 2 things:
1. Unplugging my 360 controller and plugging it back in (making it recognized as player 2)
2. editing the 360controller.cfg
It 100% works, one player is the m&k, the other is the controller... with one issue! For some reason everything about the controller works perfectly except the right stick will not look up or down!
seriously.. it is frustrating. All the commands are the same. I cannot find what i can change to get it to work.
Please keep this going! I wanna play split screen this weekend!
here is my 360controller.cfg

basically i just took out unbind all and the 1st player bindings, keeping the m&k bindings intact.
Thanks gremlin896 i was looking everywhere for a post like yours when i dug around and saw the splitscreen configs and such in the steam folders.
It 100% works, one player is the m&k, the other is the controller...
Yay! Looking forward to playing it with my buddy this weekend...the right stick will not look up or down!
Oh. But if you fix that, then we're golden.
Edit: Also, can you use a regular X360 controller, or do you need to get one that works with Windows?

wait so the game will have splitscreen for the PC? i mean, you couldn't access that if it wasn't in the final product right?

I expect so, since they have the backend of it already working in the demo. Also my idea that it was something accidently left in from the 360 demo was wrong, because the icons are already all made for the PC version. (see: http://img362.imageshack.us/img362/1530/l4ddemhosp ital01apartmezi4.jpg (http://img362.imageshack.us/img362/1530/l4ddemhospital01apartmezi4.jpg) )

the icons are there because when ur spectateing mode,
also theres away to set the second charecters name, ive forgotten the command i will look in a second, really best way to do all this is create a cfg file, place it in the cfg folder and just exec that . then everyting wil be setup and no messing around
this changes player 2s name
name2 secondplayersname

Cool, this works really well, except for the right analog stick.
But if you fix that, then we're golden.
Someone on the Steam forums said to change [+jlook] to [cmd2 +jlook] in the 360controller.cfg (remove the brackets), and that would fix the right analog stick.
My question now becomes, will this work with a USB PlayStation 2 controller? Would I need to change it a little?

Ah, could you please please please tell me how you get that to work? My buddy pre-ordered and got the demo, and Imma sleep over his house this weekend (i have a crappy laptop and I can't play it /ihasasad) so I can get a taste of this awesome game. I'd love to play it with him on his computer, but problem is he doesn't have a 360, only a ps2.
You're my ray of hope, please help me!
Edit: I also have a PS2, so we have about 3 ps2 controllers we could use. I'm not saying that we'd need to, but... eh.
My situation is pretty similar to thattrunkmonkey's. I'd also be interested in that .cfg once you get all the bindings worked out.

Sure thing, I'm using an EMS Dual Shooter to connect my PS2 controllers to the PC, if you have something different there's always a chance that it might not work :(
You have to have two controllers connected through it, even though player 1 can still use the M&KB, it just messes up their controls if you only have a controller in the second player slot.
This is my 360controller.cfg which I've tested working last night with a full splitscreen playthough of the demo :)

Sure thing, I'm using an EMS Dual Shooter to connect my PS2 controllers to the PC, if you have something different there's always a chance that it might not work :(
So I do need to have a specific type of PS2 controller to work? I was thinking that I wouldn't be able to use a plain old controller, but I shoved the thought out of my head 'cause I wanted to play so badly.
My friends controller is just a normal one, so dammit.
Thanks for the info though.

Ah, I just talked to the friend whose house I'm going over to today, and he said that he has a gamepad, er... Madfox or madwolf or some sort of brand like that. Could that work? If so, how would it be configured.
He said it was similar to a ps2 controller.
tips are gladly accepted.

Okay.. Somebody help me out here?
I've got ingame with the controller and keyboard, but the problem is that we're controlling the same character, since I can't get the controller to be the 2nd player. The quick unplugging trick doesn't work, so is there any other way to get the controller to be 2nd player?
I have also tried with 2 controllers, but they both immediately go to the first player spot..

cmd2 +jlook solved my problem but now i cant get the controller back into 2nd player mode. somebody help!!!!!
As of the update, ss_splitmode is no longer a recognized command.
I think I speak for us all when I say, what the fuck.

You have to wonder, why did they put it in the demo, if they were only going to take it out?
Those fuckers, if it was never enabled in the first place, I wouldn't be as pissed off as I am now. Valve = -1, BAD VALVE!

Holy shit! This thread is still alive! I just saw the first day and thought " People will let this thread die" and left it O.o
Edit:
Valve sucks when doing demos, they put even what wasn't to be here and then they get it out after we get happy.
