Anyone have any idea to open that .vpk files? I think the models, sounds and textures are compressed there

I already poked around in the archives with GCFScape, and so far I've got nothing. I've found animations, but no models and no textures. I'm assuming that all that will be in the game archive when Left 4 Dead officially comes out.

theres a achive, but u can open the first file inside them if u rename it to a .vtf
seems photoshops will load the first texture from inside it and miss the others. curently i dont think theres is a tool to properly open them.

I've updated my tool with a UI and made some fixes to the extraction (http://blog.gib.me/2008/11/14/left4dead-vpk-extraction-tools-now-with-ui/).

I was able to successfuly extract all the textures from the game with that tool. There's some pretty nifty spoilers-- one example being an "infected_flashlight" texture covered in veins not unlike the zombie flashlight feature in zombie panic. It also extracted models, but Crafty does not recognize the format as it was probably updated for L4D.
all other files, including map .bsps, remain encrypted.
Some of the VPK files in the full game are unencrypted, whereas others are encrypted, any files in encrypted VPKs will be copied out encrypted. My assumption is that the demo content is what remains unencrypted in the full game preload.

Nope. At least, not in the case of the textures. I have materials for billboards and posters not seen in the demo, materials for models(like planes, boats, and trains), and most notably--graffitti decals for every safehouse in the game. It's all here.
Probably an oversight then.

i think 90% of the preload is encrypted, the maps are the cfg files are , maybe when the game is out it unencrypts?

is all thats contained in the demo vpks are models and materials? or are there other files that your program doesnt extract?
Just models, materials, and particles.

What do you mean? If you'd like I can search through the UI textures for any goodies. Is that what you're asking? and what about campaigns???

im on about the actual ui menu, where versus is blurred out, and some the campaigns are blured out, i thought that the resource files determine whats showen in the menu, however editing them makes no ingame changes. for me anyways

nah, of course not. the full campaign just doesn't exist in the demo files. Versus mode does, but I'm sure Valve did more than just use one little file to disable it.

i know it doesnt exist, but im looking for the ui so i can add my campaign to the list of playable campaigns,
also with the vpk extraction if i retexture the tank there is no way to test it because you cannot inject back into the vpk, and placeing it in the correct location in the materials folder doesnt work either.
