One thing I noticed was that when you shoot walls or objects (even wood), every few times a bullet ricochets and makes an awesome streak. I think the frequency of it has to do with the weapon (thats why in team fortress the bullets leave so much of a trail), and I hope to see modders make something that shoots 100% of this (it would make the person you're shooting it at look like super man). I also heard about hair physics (wut), but I haven't seen that yet. Tell me anything new you have noticed in the source engine..

The water coming from the gutters in the alley splash on you and not go through you. Go third person and walk under the long trail of water falling and you can see it splash off your head or shoulder.

If you watch zoey's hair when she moves it dangles around, not 100% realistic but it's better than it just being stiff.
Also the cloth on the molotov wiggles around when you shake your camera/etc.
And of course you can finally see your own legs.

Destructible walls, But I suspect those wall was prebroken to begin with so that not new.
The only thing I really didn't like is how you can't pick up random stuff with e anymore.
At least for this update it looks like most of the new engine features are behind the scenes.

Zombies break through walls (tanks can as well) depending if a horde comes from the other side. With the AID it'll be quite random after all.
You don't really see this in the demo, but it's in the hospital level I know (what is it..4/5 of the same campaign I believe).

Not for a Valve game. Can you name one (female) Valve character with really big tits?
Anyway, yeah. You can look down and see yourself, but it's kind of useless to me because the whole reason I wanted an FPS where you could see your feet was to make it easier to time jumps. But now you can look down and see your feet hovering in the air, so it doesn't help for jumping...
Wait, can you shoot yourself in the foot? *starts up demo*

All of the visual effects like the blurring and black-and-white on screen. Also the film grain, which I love.

You do see this in the demo. The first is the living room, the other is to your left just as you exit the apartments.

I like everything that was mentioned in this thread. I have nothing to add cuz I can't think of anything that wasn't already said.
Although, I think I like Zoey more than Alyx right now.
Oh! the self shadowing/bump-mapping, it looks really nice in this game. Plus, the extended use of dynamic lighting--it wasn't shown off that much in orange box.

I was in the bathroom in apartments and my friend was randomly shooting, and i swear that a bullet penetrated through the wall and left a bullet hole in the bathroom. It may have been a glitch, but if it wasn't then bullet penetration is something else that's new. I know for a fact that you can penetrate doors (including metal) and zombies bodies... need to test if my previous statement was correct.

yeah, certain guns can penetrate even the BSP. Once I realized it I started using the rifle even more. that zombie just ran behind the pillar? fire like mad, he'll drop. wheeee!

I always wondered how female assassins in games did all that crazy aerobatic shit with D+ sized boobs.
Here's something I discovered. When you get into the first saferoom, right after you close the door, start healing yourself, and hold down the button until the stats come up. Once the next map loads, you will have used the medkit, without having to go through the whole process again. It's not much, but it's a little something.

I noticed that too. Thinking i would get a bonus health pack, i didn't realize if i took the health kit at the safhouse in apartments i wouldn't get one in the subway level. Nice way of keeping continuity.

Yeah, dynamic lighting is amazing in this game. Best way to find this out is to go to one of the closets and turn your flashlights off, then fire wildly. It is amazing, really.

Never really considered the flashing of the gun to be dynamic light... but you are correct because I remember the flashes as being dynamic light in Battlefield 2...

Yeah couldn't each of the (gun)flashes possibly be a non-dynamic light?

I do wish you could shoot out the headlights of the car near the end of apartments though, they must be those fandangled diamond-plated kind, cos bullets don't affect them.

but a certain game engine can always consider it as either dynamic or just regular static lighting, who knows?
Oh the gun flashes are the best, when I was in a pitch black room fighting a few, I could only find the baddies through the flashes, like those horror movies!
Yeah it sucks when you're caught in a dark room and you have to reload / melee them away because your flashlight swings around and you lose sight of all the zombies!

I'm glad there's no ironsights..because first off its a Valve game (huge counter-strike fan- and pro ;] ), and all their games own without em, if there were ironsights it would make your aim slightly better and this would discourage you to crouch to get better accuracy so your teammates can shoot over you, and it would take away of the fast paced'ness of the game.

However I also don't think bullet penetration exists in L4D. It's never been noted by Valve, and the only incident I've seen work is shooting through doors that you know a mob is behind, and the only reason this works is because the doors are destructible objects rather than the typical ent_door or w.e the hammer filename was.

Bullet penetration has been in since counter-strike in 1999.
Anyway, is the hair physics truely something new? We all know the medic's jacket in TF2 moves dynamically, isn't it just the same thing but applied to hair?

Valve added a few new things
-new lighting technique called Self Shadowed Normal Mapping with some more advanced shadowing
-Improvements to AI and Rendering in general so they can render a horde of zombies
-Post processing effects (film grain, vignetting, etc)
-Improvements to multithreading
There may be more, but those are the big ones

I noticed it - and it pissed me off. Fair enough if bullets go through plaster board, but when bullets go through walls it totally defeats the point of taking cover.
Thus, why CS is a pain in the ass.

One thing I noticed that would feel like a 'fix' to me as far as lighting. You do NOT see your fellow team member's flash light 'map' on walls or objects. Just the 'cone' coming from their flash light.
I have on more than one occasion thought I was showing where something was at by pointing my flash light at it. WRONG. My team mates only saw the object when I would fire at it with my pistol(s). The dynamic lighting of the muzzle flashes worked fine. The flash light... only for me.
If they fix that... it would really immerse you better because in a dark hallway or room when there are infected coming in hard and fast and your team is firing like mad and 'swiping' with their weapons, the lights moving around would intensify the 'frantic' feel of the moment.
My two cents...

One cool thing I noticed is that if one of your teammates points their flashlight at you, you can see a rainbow effect on the edges of the glow or whatever.
I don't think I've see that anywhere before, so that's cool.
Yeah, they really should fix having all the flashlight beams for everyone. That would be awesome...

One thing I think would be awesome to add would be ropes that could loop together and interact with props. Right now they can droop, wave, and move in realtime, but npcs and players don't affect them.
