So this morning I felt like mapping and decided to have a go at another L4D map, I looked at it and went meh and stopped making it then came back to it later tonight. I took a guest with me this time, the L4D Textures, which I've never seen on a custom l4d map yet, just orange. Take a look.

It's not meant to be dark really, I'm adding lights now, which I forgot to do :P The textures looks crap on fullbright.

Why not keep it dark like that? It looks great as is and adds a horror feel. Just what this game is about.

The lights will be rare, and trust me, will not be bright. we'll see, If it ruins it I'll switch back to dark. Only problem is that then everyone will need to enter mat_fullbright 0 in the console.

I'm liking that last picture-looks like a haunted house type thing. Just wondering-will source allow you add candles? That'd be great.

The problem with the lighting is I don't have many models for "Sources" of the light, so it looks REALLY out of place and terrible. However, there are 2 streetlights outside, i'll expand the range a little tad and it will be a bit lighter, but until I get some models for the interiors there's not much I can do, it looks better with no lights anyway :P
I've done a few things, more textured, more items and the light-posts. I did have dustmodes but it turns out VALVe doesn't have the dustmode textures in the demo and I can't find them so I'll have to do without those, I did however add rain.

What do you use to map, and do you know where I could learn?
I use hammer editor - In the Source SDK which you should have under the tools menu of steam, unless you haven't bought any of VALVe's Games.
To learn it I started off with these tutorials:
http://www.halfwit-2.com/?page=tutorials&category= 1 (http://www.halfwit-2.com/?page=tutorials&category=1)
If you go from the first to the last you should know pretty much everything.

Looks a little too blue. And, your skybox looks wonky.
But, Good Job!
Spyder638
11-15-2008, 01:27 PM
I'm not using a skybox, I can't find the name of any L4D ones. >_< I'm use using an ice texture, it's nice and plain. I'll make it a tad darker to remove the blue even though it's meant to be moonlight

Hum, I sent a PM but i'm unsure if you got it. Could you explain how to use Textures from L4D when mapping, and props if possible? I'm not too good with custom configs.

I'm just gonna have to man up and say that I think this game is going to have incredible custom maps/mods, I'm a die-hard 360 fan but all this time away from it (RROD) is doing weird things to my head...

Banshou, I sent you a PM back now.
and I can't agree with you more Dan, there will be some really nice official maps coming from out there.
I'll have another few pictures up in a minute maybe.
Edit:
No pictures, going to fix up the lighting, or at least try tomorrow. Good news is I have the infected fully working in it, it's total MAD seeing them flood from all the doors windows and rooftops!!!
Edit again:
Okay, maybe one picture, but disregard the lighting, need to fix it up!

Is the skybox from Apartments in No Mercy. I hope that helps. xD And thanks for the PM, I kinda get what you mean. Just trying to sort out where the L4D textures are, I assume either in Left4Dead folder, or in a NCF or whatever they're called. I'll figure it out c.c

It was kinda easy to find too lol
I decompiled a L4D Apartment map, then went to map properties and copied and pasted.
I also extracted materials from the things.. I forget, v** directory file, but in hammer they're all Purple/Black checkers. Is that normal?

btw, compliments on the map. Very nice looking so far. I made a test one with the orange/gray measuring textures for demo, it plays decent, but I really do need textures XD

Hey guys, how are you accessing the l4d files?
I'd like to start working on a l4d map, however through sdk, I'm unable to open it through l4d as "Current Game"...
are you guys just making bmp's in cs, and trading them over or what? I googled it and was unable to find anything on it...
Spyder638
11-16-2008, 09:34 AM
No. I have all the textures in hammer. Just like custom textures.

I'm going to start expanding out the map now. Another note is in those pictures the sky box isn't on it because the sky box looked terrible because of the size of the map. It will however be there.

You should release both the pitch black map, because it looks badass, and one or two other versions of it with light, maybe the one with moonlight too! Hunters are going to have a field day on this map.. lol.

11-16-2008, 12:10 PM
Guys! Don't panic about the lighting. I promise I'll do something about it. It's just that I'm needing models for "light sources" which I will do, for example I have planned cars out on the street with fire, creating light.
Also, cheers for this being on the new post! Has x100 my motivation for this map and it made my day.

11-16-2008, 12:36 PM
Well, lighting is one of the most important aspects of level design, without good lighting, a map looks like crap, just as you said, if it's full bright, everything looks crap...but hey...at least you can see the environment right?
So far, nobody knows what the actual map looks like, for all we know, it could be pretty chunky looking and not that great at all, and you might know that it is quite the opposite...but you have to put up with comments saying "its too dark" or "looks blocky" until you put some lighting into the map.
Don't worry about the light sources, just use placeholders for now, we all understand that you can't use all the resouces from l4d, so it's no big deal, we have an imagination, and we can imagine what would take place where the placeholders are ;)
I would say good work and keep it up, but people have nagged you to add lighting since the first post, and it's still not done...and that means I can't see that map, hence why I can't say good work and keep it up :P
BTW, not trying to flame you here, take it as direct constructive criticism ;)
What good is making a masterpiece artwork for someone, if they're blind...

11-16-2008, 12:37 PM
So, why not keep it dark but make some thunders and stuff? So when the thunder strikes, for a brief moment you will see everything and maybe shit your pants off when some ugly zombie is right in front of you! lol
(I must be crazy for saying that... I WILL DIE IF THAT HAPPENS TO ME! lol)
Spyder638
11-16-2008, 12:49 PM
I'm not making it light, this WILL be darker than the regular dark map because you guys need to play it to understand, it's awesome seeing like maybe 5-6 meters ahead of you and zombies running out of the darkness. But it will be a tiny bit lighter. I'm not saying it's not blocky, it actually is quite blocky [As of now, I'm going to spend a lot of time on detail when the SDK comes out, I might even completely change it] It all depends on what VALVe gives us. Also marcoapaulo, it's like lightning when you shoot your gun, the street blinks in light! Tomorrow after school my plan is:
- Start up single player Left 4 dead, take lots and lots of screenshots of the first map and how study VALVe made their buildings detailed.
- Apply what I can from what I noticed in Valves techniques.
- Expand the map a little more.
- Work on spawn points for the survivors. (I broke them, but do know what is wrong and how to fix them)
- Set up some areas for prop placement for Tuesday (Or the next time I get to map, because of the L4D release!)

It really needs at LEAST moonlight. In terms of playability and realism, it needs it. It is never pitch black outside, and it shouldnt be in a game either. Make it dark, but not TOO dark. Or if you want to do the being able to see so far thing, add fog.

that really depends on the clouds, the there are thick and big clouds covering the moon you can't see shit :)
awesome map btw, looking forward to see it complete.

I was too lazy to really read these posts so forgive me if it's been addressed, but do you plan on placing fog, Silent Hill-style? Some dark gray-ish fog.
I think it would allow you to place more lighting overall (because I like to appreciate my environment) but keep the claustophobic feel that the "all black , all the time" fans would appreciate.
I'd love to say 'looking good so far' but I can't see much from these screenies, hehe.

So you got any ideas for finales/maps that you could add later to make into a campaign. I hate to say this if it's been said a bizillion times previously, but I didn't see it asked anywhere. Also, if you keep this pretty tight pace up, when do you think you might have it (the first version) done?
Spyder638
11-17-2008, 06:09 AM
It's a survival map, not a campaign. You will be given a certain amount of time to survive with what you have until an event happens that will allow you have access to the safe room.
For the people talking about lighting, I'm going to have to be serious to make this point made now.
STOP TALKING ABOUT LIGHTING, IT ->WILL <- BE EASIER TO SEE. IT'S NOT THAT BAD IN GAME, I'VE HAD PLAYTESTERS OF THE SNIPPET, THEY SAY THE LIGHTING IS GOOD. (Even people I don't know I made the map so there hasn't been any friendship lying.)
Sorry I had to type that but I feel that point needs to be made that I will sort out the lighting. At school I had a free period today and I've looked through quite a few guides on lighting. Trust in me. ;)
Edit:
I forgot to mention that after every 5 minutes the difficulty will increase.

Any decent mapper knows lights, next to prop details and UV Mapping, are one of the last things you add to a map.
If you need some help on optimising, lightning or any other mapping questions feel free to drop me a PM bro.

Tomorrow, likely saying the .fgd is in those files.
People I'm looking for:
People who can give general mapping tips.
People who want to test. (Not too many please) - MUST own the full L4D game.
People who have landmark ideas (Ideas for places in the map)
If you are any of these people then PM me and offer what you got, if I like it we can discuss it more over steam.
