View Full Version : My problem with L4D

I have been following L4D for a very long time, and while it's by far worth the $50 I paid for it, so far it hasn't really held up to expectations.

The problem with it is that it gets very boring after a while, because the gameplay is incredibly repetitive. While it's true that the AI director shakes up the timing a little, the core gameplay remains the same.

The main problem is the levels. While the scenery changes, the atmosphere, mood, and lighting always remains the same. There's not many events, either. I've noticed that when playing through half-life games again, scripted events serve as landmarks, defining and giving shape to a level rather than becoming boring from having seen them before. Left 4 Dead contains almost none of these, and while crescendo events do give some definition to the map, these are rare.

The bottom line is, it seems like the mapmakers just kind of figured that the Director would just make everything fun, and concentrated on other things.

Before you all flame me, I think that other than that, Left 4 Dead is an excellent game. That's just my one gripe with it.

Go play halo.

Seriously though, go play another game. It doesnt matter if a game is the best game ever or not, if you constently play it, it will get repetitive and you'll get bored after a while. Play other games once in a while, then come back to left 4 dead refreshed.

I've noticed when I play single player, the game feels like a chore and I soon become bored. When I play with friends however, it feels like a grand experience I can play for hours.

This. Dying 10 times in a map on expert is no fun for me, so i take a break, play another game for a few hours (days?), go sleep, draw, w/e.

When you come back, 99% of the time, you'll have fun again.

This is why I play versus almost exclusively.

I'm playing less of L4D and awaiting new vs maps.

The 2 we have are the worst 2 out of the 4 campaigns xD

My point is that the levels feel kind of flat compared to other games. There are few noteworthy events. Even Halo did better than L4D at this.

I kinda agree with you dreadmonkey. I do think that the game is repetitive a lil bit. Any everyone thats just like"shut up you fag" you guys are being stupid. He wasn't flaming your precious l4d, he was just making a VALID point.

The four campaigns are awesome, but I agree that future maps need more events and interaction with the environment. Crescendoes and avoidable panic events break up the usual gameplay in a way the AIDirector can't.

The core gameplay is still the absolute best zombie shooting evar and would be fun in any shitty level, but future maps (custom or official) will be much more memorable with some extra gimmicks.

And more explosions...

Edit: ....like,.. big explosions.

I know what you mean, I look forward to the Crescendo events, and yes even the Tank fights. These break up the monotony, which there is not much of in my opinion. However, a level with 5 Crescendo events may be a little overboard... I don't know that might be fun.

Counter Strike is also repetitive, even more so then this game because each round is like only 1 or 2 mins. But I have tons of fun with left 4 dead and for me does not get repetitive because every time you play, it's always different.
