Apparently, the melee decay (in Versus) is default. That one's not a mod.

It is a modification, never had that problem when the game was launched. I've read other people complaining about it as well

It's not a mod, it happens on the 360 version as well.

including that annoying melee limitation mod!!!!!
Pretty sure that the melee limitation is part of the game. It's so in vs you dont just sit in the corner and melee the hordes away over and over.

It wasn't there for the first week the game launched though, and isn't on default on some servers.
It's not a mod. Believe me.

I don't seem to have encountered that problem.

I've encountered it, and it is bullshit.
I prefer to play on servers where I can melee all I fuggin want. :)

Wait... melee limitation is part of the game?
I'm pretty sure it isn't. It only seems to be on those servers that make you spawn a mile away from the survivors and have the long cool down on Smoker misses.
It's a mod/server-side rules, I'm pretty sure.
Most Versus servers (the vanilla ones at least) allow you to melee as much as you want. I know this because of the amount of times I'm vomitted on and do nothing but spam melee.
It's part of the game. I run a server. No mods. This happens. Believe, this is not a modification I've made to the server. It just happens.

i don't know what the hell you people are talking about. my game and server tool are fully updated. this annoying melee limitation NEVER happens when i create a server.

It's not a mod, just a server cvar.
And it fucking sucks.

I like it. Keeps things challenging.

you mean that turning up the difficulty for survivors on versus isn't enough?

I hate mods where tanks are set for certain places. I have see verses where tanks are on the first level. No one survives. It sucks.

It's a mod/rule change, whatever.
It's not on standard Versus servers.
On servers were you have to spawn a mile away from the survivors, there is also a melee limit.
On servers were you can spawn close to survivors, there is unlimited melee. This is the way Valve intended Versus to be played.
I don't know where people are getting this popular notion that limited melee was put in place by Valve as the norm.

Yes. It is. I run. A standard vs server. It happens. It is not a mod. It's a default. It's not consistent. No one. Really knows. What it is. BUT. IT'S NOT. A MOD. OR EVEN A CVAR VALUE. Whatever it is, it happens on vanilla, un-modded versus servers. Believe me.
I don't know where people are getting this popular notion that limited melee was put in place by Valve as the norm.
BECAUSE. WE RUN. SERVERS. WITH NO MODS. AND IT HAPPENS.
Beyond that, you'll have to ask Valve wtf is up with it, 'cause no one really knows. All I ask is, stop blaming the server admins. Most of the time, they're just as confused and pissed off about it as you are.
That is all.

So then what is the version of Versus that Valve has as standard? The one that lets you spawn close to the survivors or the one that forces you to spawn further away with longer cooldowns on missed smoker attempts?
Because the latter is the only one that I have EVER witnessed limited melee.
How the hell should I know? Ask Valve.
I will tell you this: removing the sv_cheats 0 variable from a server.cfg eliminates the smoker tongue recharge. It may even remove the melee decay. WHY? No idea. It makes no sense. But that's the truth of it. So you'll have to ask Valve ... is it a glitch, or did they intend for this to happen? If so, do they assume admins will run servers with sv_cheats 0 included in the config? Many people do, I can tell you that much. GameServers includes it in their default configs, ffs. It certainly doesn't qualify as a mod. The bottomline is, having that particular variable in your server.cfg shouldn't affect gameplay - but in this case it does. Just another fucked up fact on a long list of fucked up facts when it comes to hosting an L4D server.
