Hey all...maybe this is nothing, but I have some concerns about potential skin modding. I think it would be cool as hell to mod skins, particularly to like the player, but I am sure that there are going to end up being a TON of people playing with goofy, unrealistic and atmosphere destroying skins. I mean....I'm sure you're going to see tons of Boba Fetts, Spikes, demons, random characters form other games, maybe even some sadistic fools make skins that look identical to an infected, boss or otherwise(seriously, this could be a problem)? Anyhow....how could we curb this?

well, to be honest, unless you have the skin installed yourself, it will most likely default to the original skins. so if someone wants to skin the chick butt ass naked except for boots and ammo belt it and had it installed... they would see zoey butt ass naked while you would see normal zoey.
i mention the nakedness because i know it will inevitably happen.

just as games like quake 3 would play regular default skins for the model for everyone that had not installed the skin you were actually using.

however im not familiar with skinning in source, im just going from what i remember back in my skinning for quake 2 days.

You would only notice other people having a different skin if you had it yourself or the server you went to play on forced you to use it.

With all the other source titles you download the skins as you connect to the server....there may be an option in steam im not aware of to change this, though. But I really think the potential for infected skins is a danger

You won't see their skin unless YOU have it installed on your computer.

to the OP Errrm are you talking about client side skins or server skins?

Client side....skins that people would create and drop into the directories, and that would then be viewable to all. If your skins were only viewable to yourself they would be kind of worthless wouldn't they?
I may be wrong here, but I've spent a lot of time downloading skins when logging onto VAC Steam servers for a variety of games...

If it's client side only the person who has downloaded it will be able to se it.
If you dont want ot download server side skins I think there is a command to stop it.

With only a max of 8 people I think your going to see more player hosted games than ever before....would this complicate things?

I'm with you Stupoider...no public skin is going to look as good as the models TRS has made

Lets just hope that those who got servers thinks the same way and just doesn't use any custom content. I mean people buy games and of course they will change stuff if they want to, and others will not. It will differ from person to person, some love to play games when everyone is pink and all kinds of stuff meanwhile others wants to play the game right out of the box without any changes.

If your skins were only viewable to yourself they would be kind of worthless wouldn't they?
other peoples skins are already worthless to me. if i made skins for me and my 3 buddies that looked like us and dropped them into the directories to take the place of the originals only we would see it. what if i have done this and someone else and their 3 buddies also have their own skins... they will see themselves and i would see myself and my friends. as for celebrity skins... these can be downloaded off of sites and placed in if you want. but still its only replacing the skin for the existing model by you manually dropping it into the directory after you download it.

as for the ones you download when you enter games.. these are skin packs, mutators and other files that the particular server you are running have installed for example... if i ran a server for me and my 3 buddies id want to be able to play as me and my 3 buddies and be able to make changes to the skins and not have to force my buddies to manually drop them into the directories. so it would be set into the server itself to check if these skins are installed and to install / update them on any client that doesnt. then when you entered that server you would see those skins... however this is all dependent on the character creation abilities you get with the game.. if new models are possible ect ect. but typically this is how it works

server side models and skin packs will be downloaded to your game and only run on the servers that have those packs installed.

client side skins will only display on clients that have them installed manually.

Sir monster's explanation covers everything, I believe

Personally, if I have to download a crapton of sounds and files before entering a server, I just stop and go to another.
