I frequently am wishing them back so i'll know to boot an idiot.

Merits belong in L4D. They tell you who is the dumbass TKer who doesn't share health packs. I've faced these people too many times and there should be a way to at least view their stats (Teammates killed, Friendly Fire, Distance Travelled) so we can get a sense of their abilities.
If we have these though, we may need ranked and player servers which would take fairly long to incorporate. I just wish they could do something like they did with TF2.

My first request for a demerit, walking more than 10 ft to melee a hunter with no infected hitting you and a full clip and then letting the hunter pounce again or get away. I can't tell you how many noobs have done that!

More annoying: A noob who doesn't know he can melee hunters/tongues and proceed to waste time shooting his little pistol and letting me take a lot more damage than i should have.

Yeah, I have a problem that there are apparently no consequences or no deterants for blatant griefing or simple persistent bad team play.
There are an unlimited number of ways you could design the merit/demerit system, so I don't think there is any valid argument that would make it a terrible idea.
Based on what Valve have said about why they rejected it, I'm not too happy. I'm pretty sure that many of the awful games I've had in L4D could have been avoided with a merit/demerit system.

I want the merits and demerits back if we can get valve to put them back then I will be happy but if not then someone will eventually mod it.
A merit/demerit system like the one originally intended for Left 4 Dead has no place in a party game therelike.
Any time you decide to have a teamkilling match at the end of a round, you get a demerit. Any time you just dick around with sv_cheats, you get a demerit. Any time you shoot a teamkiller, you get a demerit.
There is no way that system wouldn't have been annoying. It's with rare foresight that a game dev sacks an innovative feature, but Valve knew that the merits/demerits system was broken. Now if only they knew that the matchmaking system is broken...

its pretty ugly (oxi moron haha), but I like the "openserverbrowser" command to put into the console.

Vote to change from player to ranked or to turn merits/demirits on or off?

I like that, like have unranked games, and games without demerits/merits, and others with them, give it a little bit of Westwood style to it. those old C&C games were great.

Or add it as a checkbox to the "find a lobby" thing. Along with "pure server".

Maybe.
Also, another problem is that, if you make a mistake (like if your finger falls and hits the mouse button and you accidentally shoot and incapacitate your teammate [which happened to me once]), you carry it with you forever, and you're getting excluded from every game you try to play.
That might be solved with a vote to rescind demerits, but that's a bit too complex for most.
An idea that just came to me: player tags. You know, you could set tags for yourself, like "vanilla" or "long tongue recharge" or "alltalk on", and the matchmaking sets you up with servers that have the same tags as you.
...Holy shit. I'm going to email Valve with that.

player tags
I like that idea... Kinda like CoD 5 clan tags.
And I'm going to e-mail VALVe about the voting to turn merits/demerits off thing with a link to this.

You know, if you get one demerit, that's not that bad. But if you have a ton, that's where the problem lies. Everyone is going to make mistakes, but with the merit/demerit system you can tell who the big trouble makers are.

Good point.
Well, now I don't know where I stand on the issue. :/

I agree here. At least something similar to what Resident Evil Outbreak did as far as record keeping. It would be neat to view other player's statistics.

i think they should just do what they did with tf2 and put the average amount of kills, headshots, protections, revives etc. on your stats page.
that'd be cool.
kennykjc

TF2 is different though. The teams tended to be large enough that one or two idiots didn't have as much influence... plus each game tended to last like 10 minutes on average. A L4D campaign has only 4 players and lasts between 45 minutes to 2 hours, so I kinda want matchmaker to not give me an even chance of getting persistent assholes on my team.

its the fucking play testers, saying 'aw we dont like it because it makes us feels rubbish'
in my opinion i think theyre just shit at the game

Stop whining about griefers and bad teammates and use the "vote kick" function for god's sake. If they're so bad, you'd be better off with the AI.
Would you like to be judged for every single friendly-fire accident you've had, every friendly boredom-fuelled shootup, every teammate thats been burned by your molotovs and every medkit you haven't used to heal a teammate below 10 health?
Merits are cool with me though.

I chose yes, but not because I want demerits put back in, ( I don't want demerits).
I really liked seeing the merits; even if they weren't permanently recorded, I'd like to be able to see all the stats, not just a select few.
The end of the campaign has a good amount of stats, but I still miss seeing the old merits, they just had a more co-op feel than each person having achievements to unlock.

i was really looking forward to the merit (and demerit) system. i'd like to see it put back in, or perhaps some form of it that is more forgiving to accidental things. i mean, you can't really help shooting someone in the back if they think strafing and circling around a horde is a good idea.

A temporary fix. And no, I don't want to play with the AI.

I believe merits are far more important then demerits; something based on the number of times you've done them to the amount of time you've played.

Which still kinda acts like a demerit if someone has a low number of merits. I guess this I would be fine with... but I still think FF and going rambo etc etc. has to factor in to it somehow.
Dunno why we are bothering to discuss this anyway, Valve will never go back on this issue.

Perhaps have a balancing system. 1 Demerit negates 1 Merit and vice versa. Say you start off nuetral, at 0. Merit adds 1, demerit minuses 1, therefore as long as you do more good things then bad things, you will be in positive numbers and people will understand your a good team player, where as if you have a large negative number, you obviously are a griefer. Of course, I can see hosts being assholes about people with low ratings who might just be new and had a couple accidents or something. Just an idea that occurred to me.
Oh, I also don't know what the old merit/demerit system was like, so it could very well be exactly like the idea I just stated, in which case, I feel stupid.

Of course, the person could also have just started playing, so that isn't a good thing to judge people with.
I think that we need merrits alone at the least, and maybe confirmed demrits (IE: you get a y/n prompt to demrit someone if they TK you.)
This might work: a simple stat tracking system which is accessable ingame would be nice though, like:
X friendly fires an average of Y times per chapter. or
X has friendly fired Y times over Z games (average of A times per Movie)
as well as
X has saved Y team-mates over Z games (average of A times per Movie)
X has an accuracy rating of Y %
X has played Y games so far
Understand what I'm saying?
