View Full Version : High end single core vs low end multi core??

They've said there will be content optimized for mutli core procs....are these optimizations exlusive to multi cores?
Will my 2.8 single be able to render effects that a low end (1.2) dual core user can see? Or is it just based on whether or not your proc is dual or not? Because I hope you have the option of trying to push your rig, if you want....

I was wondering that.
Like if i have two 2.2ghz CPUs will that be equal to a dual core 2.2ghz CPU?

Well right now we can only really assume it will run fine on any machine that allows hl2/css to play.

Yeah but they've said that there will be content optimized for multi core procs....just not if it will be EXCLUSIVE to multi cores or not.

exactly.. if someone has a 2.2 dual core that adds to 4.4, my single core is 3.07 how much am i missing out on... (i wish someone knew)

When burger king says they've added a new special sauce to the whopper burger, do you expect that special sauce to be added to the fish filet sandwich too?

well since youre comparing fast food to computer processors im going to assume you dont know what youre talking about.
but just to go along with you for a bit:
burger king announcing theyve added a new sauce to the whopper does not mean it cannot be put on a fish filet by request. after all isnt their motto, "have it your way"?
you seem to be suggesting that a fish filet sandwich is some how incompatible with the new sauce leaving the option to have it applied onto the fish an impossibility.
this has me laughing very hard tho. thank you.

If burger king did however offer a new special sauce with the intention of featuring it in all their horrible foods, they'd say,
"Come to Burger King and have yourself one of our many great items, now featuring our brand new special sauce!"
because it's in their best interest to represent that their selling point (in this case, the brand newspecial sauce) as being as prominent as possible.
Just thinking about a whopper though is making me gag.

i still dont understand how this explains if a dual 2.2 core for example will get features that a single core 4.4 processor wont. dont they have the same speeds or am i missing some bit of processor math?
i dont know what the lowest dual core speed is, but my single core is 3.07 not much lower than a 4.4 ... rounded down just 1. difference.. what does this mean for me and the dual core content/effects?
also, i only eat their spicey chicken sandwich.

Im not going to explain how dual core works, it takes too much effort... Unless I come up with some clever analogy right now...*waits a minute scratching head*
Nope nothing. Dual core is faster, allows more to be done at once. A single core processor will work on something, finish it, work on the next where as a dual core processor will work on two things at once, therefore allowing more... well anything, in terms of L4D I guess... wiggly bellies.
The expaination may suck... but I tried.

im not going to understand this unless you put it in fast food terms.

what about if you had two 3.3ghz CPUs would they be faster than a dual core 2.2ghz CPU?

All the real technical things aren't and probably won't be released for a while.

this core crap is pissing me off. apple is releasing an 8core processor in one of its next machines... then the week or two after that im sure some company will come out with 16. two days later they will skip right up to 64 core processors which will be surrounded in liquid nitrogen to keep it cool.
other than maybe rendering 3d animated movies on your home computer who the hell needs an 8 core processor!?
and if they are up to 8, why the hell not 16 already, and for that matter 64, whats holding them back, what happened to having 2 years before your machine is obsolete? its more like 6-8 months these days.

I dont think single cores are obsolete at all; I've had my 2.8 P4 shortly since it first launched a few years back. What sucks is that my board is AGP, and there arent any PCI-E boards that support my proc chipset. So when I do upgrade, I have to replace everything.....but hopefully my 512 MB 7600 GS can hold off obsoletion for another year or so.

yea i think u'll be ok with a 7600 gs for a while, i have two SLI but i dont think that will make much more of a difference???
