And also try Amorphis. :)

And Heavy Metal with Celloes: Apocalyptica.

Most Finnish people love Metal. It's about 40-50% of our youth, that choose metal over other musical genres.

EDIT: But this is a real metal fan:

I'm mostly into death metal, but I've been known to dabble in black, thrash, blackened death (Behemoth, Arghoslent ftw), progressive and even power metal! None of that -core shit though. Not really my bag, with the screaming and whining. I'll take a good growl over a pig squeal any day of the week. Oh! And folk metal. Gotta love it.

I like Decapitated, Vader, Behemoth, Hate Eternal, Nile, Thyrfing, DEATH, Gojira, Emperor, Entombed, Finntroll, Negura Bunget, Nevermore (Jeff Loomis is among the best), Psycroptic, Quo Vadis, Opeth (yes, even the soft shit), Vital Remains...

And the list goes on. Fuckin love metal.

Bolded aren't Metal, Mindfreak's a show and Roadrunner is a label. Wtf is this shit? /facepalm

I have a fuck ton of Metal. Haven't listened to much lately, have been in favor of Indie and Hip-Hop and a tiny bit of Punk and Folk and various other things. I know a lot about Black Metal, like... a ton.

My last.fm (http://www.last.fm/user/FaultyClockwork) displays some Metal, though you'll have to go to the Overall top artists tab to see it, haven't been listening to much Metal lately as I've said. My old charts (http://img70.imageshack.us/img70/2031/oldtopartistslx1.png) were pretty Metal (you can reset them).

Mindfreak is the name of the show and you listed both Mindfreak and Criss Angel. Not to mention he plays Punk. Roadrunner is also one of the failest record labels in the history of "extreme" music. Best label evar is Elephant 6, but they're an Indie label, so whatever.

Nu-Metal is not Metal. The "Metal" in the name is a misnomer. If anything the genre should be called Nu-"Metal". This guy I know, Carl, from another forum calls Nu-Metal "Aggressive Rock" and that's a far more appropriate tag for the music. It's just Rock music with particularly down tuned guitars. It's also very bad.

Also Metalcore is not the "New Wave of American Heavy Metal". Metalcore exists world wide and has been around since the 90s. It's just a mix of Metal and Hardcore, or it's supposed to be. Most of the time Metalcore is basically Metal/Punk lite and has nothing to do with Metal at all, there's so little Metal in it. It's also generally very bad and is largely a pox that defiles the names of the Metal and Hardcore Punk genres. It's a load of assholes playing generic chugging riffs in identical song structures and yelling over it about killing people and how their girlfriend dumped them. It's like a pussified lyrically version of Death Metal and real Emo (as in, Emotive Hardcore Punk).

Industrial Metal is also arguably not a genre. I've heard people describe Red Harvest, Godflesh and Head of David as Industrial Metal but I'm skeptical. I don't really listen to those bands so I can't give an opinion anyway and am way too lazy to hop on youtube and check. lolz

I don't listen to much Punk. :( Really just a ton of LC and CV. As far as genres in general I like Hardcore, Punk, sorta Ska Punk, Grindcore... so I'm basically cool with most genres of Punk I've heard. I'm a huge fan of Refused's The Shape of Punk to Come. If you're very familiar with Punk, I'd be happy for suggestions.

I'd just like to point out that Burn the Priest and Lamb of God are the same thing. They used to be called Burn the Priest before they had a singer, then they changed their name.

But yes, I do enjoy metal music.... I listen to virtually every type of music though.

Steve Austin was the original singer of Burn the Priest, then Randy Blythe took over. They didn't change the name because they got a singer, there always was a singer...
Randy was in the lineup during the name change.

A good Sampler is Short Music For Short People, there are some great songs on there, but also some really bad songs

Off the top of my head in no order

Operation Ivy - ska/87 to 89
The Dwarves - (insane weird band)
Against All Authority - (good cd is "nothing new for trash like you")
Rudimentary Peni ( the best song is media person)
The Misfits ( you probably know of them, had to put them on here just in case)
The Vandals (if you like weird but good music check out the Shingo Japanese remix, its one of my favorite cds)
Crass (the best lyrics, arguably the worst or best music)
Fifteen (the cd "lucky" or anything before that cd, the rest is crap)
Dead Kennedys (again same thing with the Misfits)
Subhumans (the uk band, i haven't heard the canadian one)
Black Flag
Bad Brains
Minor Threat
Teen Idols
The Addicts
Common Rider (mellow ska, the guy from Op Ivy is the singer)
Dead Milkmen
Bad Brains
Disaster Strikes
7 Seconds
Screeching Weasel
Necromantix
Millions of Dead Cops (inspired Stza to make music)
and as for rap or hip hop, not your usual bands in this genre but some good ones are

Deep Donkey Crew (good luck finding this, it was a local oklahoma city band, but they were awesome)
Grand Buffet
Mr. Lif

Dorito Burrito

Your teacher was a bitch? No I havn't read it, I'll have to give it a go. But, it sounds like one of those books for mothers that say that metal is devil music and you'll go to hell forever just for listening to it. I listen to metal because I like how it sounds. And most songs have alot of meaning. [I'm just gonna use my fav band chimaira for an example.] The song "The Flame, is a song where a man molests his own daughter, and he goes to get revenge. Black heart, is about his personal depression, and how those he love saved him from his own monsters inside. There a great band.

To be blunt, I think a lot of stuff mentioned here isn't very good. Here are some suggestions:

Aborym (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5VcramWqI8) (Industrial Black Metal)
Acid Bath (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfmx4SyDoXs) (very ecclectic Sludge Doom band with sick lyrics)

...And Oceans (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LronHxxGti8&feature=related) (Industrial Post-Black Metal)
Artillery (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAROgPaz7z0) (best Thrash Metal album ever)
The Axis of Perdition (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqRZUzjaz9g) (Dark Ambient/Industrial Black Metal, incredibly dark and disturbing, has Silent Hill inspired lyrics)
Bathory (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0YGZj10ww4) (basically invented Black and Viking Metal)
Belphegor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2KcFmA5AzM) (amazing Black/Death Metal)
Blind Guardian (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0TX0Q1s6sU) (Power Metal kings)
Blood Red Throne (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Eo0Wu1c5mQ) (one of my fav Death bands, done by Tchort, the guy in Green Carnation and Carpathian Forest)
Carnival in Coal (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FoOUjDvY5Ls&feature=related) (goofy Avant-Garde Grind band)
Carpathian Forest (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWRSY7l1RKU) (Punk influenced Black Metal)

Their last album was awesome. Too bad their drummer Vitek died, he was inhuman on the drums. Almost supernatural in my opinion.

Omg, that Decapitated band was garbage. Nothing I haven't heard 1000 times over. Overdone 32nd double bass, shitty power chords, generic metal vocals. No offense FaceGrater lol, not jabbing your taste in music. Also Messhuggah is terrible lol. A lot of this metal is garbage.

Not a metal band but an AMAZING band IMO... Apocalyptica.

They use orchestral music in a metal way that comes out amazing and do frequent covers of Metallica too...

For you fans of Slipknot... This song by them features Corey Taylor unmasked singing!

Apocalyptica gets WAY too much credit for being really ok. Yeah that's cool that they do metal covers and shit, but they're just more mainstream so people give them tons of credit. Look up The String Quartet, same idea, but they just cover all kinds of bands, from Queens of the Stone Age to Metallica to Coheed and Cambria to many others.

Im a rhythm kinda guy as well as the heavy stuff. I can understand how people don't like meshuggah. They write music for people who also write music in my opinion. The poly rhythms they do are just insane. The guitar is in one time signature, and the drums are in another. As for Decapitated, I loved Nihility. But i liked their new album, its was different from what other bands are doing (in the confining genre that death metal can be at times). I disagree with you on that most metal is garbage though tp500. For instance, Cynic is another band i forgot to mention. They most certainly write metal music not many other bands attempt.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7B1OKdpTJo

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=us25VHj2dPo

I dare you to say that Cynic is generic... I dare you =)

But what it comes down to is that music is all preference. There has been some talk about punk and ska bands in here and those bands could easily come under the same scrutiny as well. Same with all of the Metalcore and hardcore bands mentioned. But its all preference. So no offense taken.

He meant most of the Metal mentioned in this thread. I would have to say that most Metal is utter trash though. At the time of htis post, there are 64,320 bands listed on Metal Archives. I know that many of them suck, and a lot more probably do as well. Black and Power Metal alone have so many bad bands in the genre it's incredible.

I don't think thats exclusive to any genre of music though. I think there are a plethora (i like that word) of terrible "bands" in any genre.

It was pretty standard Groove stuff. They're a shell of their former self.

I still liked that album (i like the groove rhythmic stuff though, hence Meshuggah). But, i can see how many death metal bands, including the great ones, can fall into the standard sound though. I don't like cannibal corpse either. I like necrophagist. But it's their technical abilities i admire. I'll admit, their songs are kind of broken and somewhat A.D.D. death metal. I don't like metalcore or hardcore either. Breakdowns bother me.

Dream Theater used to be my favorite band. When i was young and a musical fascist. But there are other bands out there that do the same stuff better. I still enjoy listening to them though. I also met them. They are nice guys. But not my absolute favorite band anymore. John Petrucci is the guitarist that got me wanting to play guitar when I was high school. I heard "The Glass Prison" and Thought "I need to play guitar like that." Of course I can't, but i keep trying hehe.

I was very musically fascistic. I try to ease on it, but I obviously still have opinions about good and bad music. I used to be really mean to people I thought had bad taste. Like, brutal. Now I just try to suggest new music to them or leave them alone. I guess it's an improvement.
