Not as much as Portal, but he seemed to generally like it.

Keep in mind Yahtzee's a self-proclaimed Valve fanboy. Still, not a bad review.

He didn't tear it to tiny pieces, so that must be a good sign. :P

One of his best reviews in quite a while. "This must be how cults get started."

I really expected him to tear this game up, and make it look like crap, but thankfully he seems to love it.

I'm getting worried about old yahtzee. This is the second game in less than a month he admits to liking.

good idea with playing a regular infected while you wait to respawn as a boss infected. we could even play a normal campaign that way.

anway...

Yahtzee is cool but to some extent repetitive.
And that's also one of his critiques. To me L4D is not as re-playable as I expected it too be. (btw the part with Zoey sleeping with her bottom next to the wall was great)

I'm not sure I got that part. I know it was sexual, but I would think the wall would... deny entry.

Is that how they do it in Britain?

Out of curiosity, how re-playable were you expecting it to be? In what ways exactly? And how has it let you down in said ways?

I'm honestly just curious. Because some people still say it's infinitely re-playable for them (even after a month of heavy playing) and they can't imagine it ever getting boring, yet still others say it's not very random or surprising at all anymore and is in fact, too repetitive--which goes against nearly everything Valve was promising for it with the AID, obviously, as well as all the comments they themselves have made about how they've been playing it for a few years now and it's still fun, challenging and surprising every single time!

I'm trying to figure out the reason for this noticeable disconnect, or difference of opinion, between the two camps. :)

That's what he meant.

Anyway, coming from Yahtzee, this is a great review. I like how he talked about VS mode contrasting serious business (Survivors) with wacky fun (Infected). That's exactly what I thought the first time I played it.

Yay! I've been waiting for this one, and I wasn't disappointed. Yahtzee gave L4D a mild beating, which basically means he liked it a lot.

My best guess would be that those who find it repetitive are playing it competitively, while those who still find it exciting are playing for fun. If you're playing for the sole purpose of winning then it would be easy enough to get used to the AID's tricks and predict when they're coming up. If you're playing for fun it's as much the other players making things interesting as it is the AID.

As for playing as the normal infected while you wait, I can see why they didn't do that. The normal infected aren't supposed to be aware of you until x point. Kind of like a witch that's easier to annoy. And could you just imagine what would happen if the Infected was constantly hammering you even with the respawn times? They might not hurt you, but that would slow you down a fair bit.

Hehe of course sexual but I don't know if that's how they do it in Britain ;).

Out of curiosity, how re-playable were you expecting it to be? In what ways exactly? And how has it let you down in said ways?

First of all I still love the game and can hardly imagine to get bored of it over the next years.
Of course you are right. There is no game I can imagine that is not repetitive to some extent. Since games are based on certain "rules" they therefore narrow the range possibilities.

For example the maps. I expected to have a few more alternative routes (=a little more variety) even if the map itself still is linear. And although the normal infected spawn at many different locations one somehow already knows where they are coming from.

The idea of the 8 and how Valve programmed it is great and inventive, but it just isn't an artificial intelligence (I know that this would be way too much of an expectation). Nevertheless, Valve did a great job and I can't really complain about anything (except said bug, server and autobalancing issues)!

Awesome players predict the AI Director; bad players can't

The AI director has set timers for rushes and alters things based on how well you do aka how many enemies you kill and how fast you advance.

Set timers combined with the ability to control it with your actions makes it VERY predictable, but only the best players would notice this and/or people who looked at debug information XD

the worse players are still trying to beat 1 map on expert, so of course the game isn't over for them.

For the people who already beat all the campaigns on expert, the game is basically over. They know all the things to take advantage of, and there's nothing other than "get to the end" to do. Until Human-controlled attacks emerge.

When you've beaten expert a million times, it's time for Versus mode. Unfortunately, this mode won't be a fair challenge unless you have an amazing team and the other side does as well.

To finish it off, this is a low-content game which means you can't just run around and find things just to see them. If you know the characters, weapons, enemies, and that there are rural and city settings you've seen the whole game. Of course, when the SDK finally releases there will be a HUGE flood of zombie movie remakes and hopefully model replacements and maps for other horror settings.
