Left 4 Dead is a certified game on Cedega (http://cedega.com). While I have used Cedega/Winex to play Steam games on Linux, there are currently many issues/bugs with Steam running on Cedega. I have been dual-booting more, and more to have a more consistent gaming experience.

It seems to me that Valve games prior to HL2 Episode 1 ran a lot smoother on Winex than the games after HL2 seem to run on Cedega. That has been my overall experience with gaming on Linux. It has been my experience that HL, HL:S, HL2, CS, CS:S work extremely well under wine. HL2, ep. 1, HL2, ep. 2, Portal, TF2 work well if you spent the time to try the recommended cedega tweaks for performance. I tried the L4D demo on Cedega, and the wine processes crashed after the main menu loaded. I have been playing the game on XP since, and running my servers on Linux.
