Wondering if anyone here has played Alien Swarm?
While not full of zombies its a fantastic co-operative mod for Unreal Tournament 2004, and if you have the game I strongly recommend you check it out.
It's a top down game rather than a first person shooter, and features campaigns with an experience system for your characters.
Along with that they are making a new retail version for Source funnily enough, which is apparently due by the end of this year, although news updates are fairly scarce sadly.
Linkage!

I haven't played it myself for a while but I used to play it a lot and was involved in the community and making a custom campaign which is probably on available to play on most of the servers.
Not sure how many people still play it regularly but you can play it single player as well. With AI bots playing as teammates.

Oh man... I used to love this game. Didn't know they were making a sequel using the Source engine! O.O
Listen up, sheeple - I command thee to check out the website! If it's of the same quality as the original, it'll be almost as good as L4D. Almost.
Edit: Here's some good footage (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nfp97y4NccU) of the Unreal Tournament 2004 version in action. Note that the newer version features better graphics and an improved field of view.

It reminds of SC... Don't know why, now im looking forward to NoTLD on SC2 >.<
That game looks fun, but I'm not sure if I'll buy it for Source. It also looks like a good FPS..
Edit: Oh yeah, I remember seeing this game a while ago... IT doesn't have many updates does it :S
Infestation is nearly complete with just some "touching up to do," and they expect it out by the end of the year, hopefully sooner.
hooray for zombies

I'll definitely get this if it comes out for source, I love me some top-down shooting action and this game looks like it would deliver that and more

If you've got a copy of UT2K4, I suggest you download it and give it a shot.
For the record, AS is a game that'd definitely require (de)merits; like in L4D, friendly fire was a constant concern, with the flamethrower being useless (from the way I saw it) because of it.

therein lies my problem, sadly I am lacking a copy of UT2K4, and as such cannot play this game

I don't have it either, back when that game came out my internet connection sucked, my computer was fine but I COULD NOT, play that game online. And no matter how awesome it looked at its release I couldn't keep playing by myself all the time :S.

Then, perchance, this protoplasmic entity may see fit to acquire said interactive application and a keg of noxious potables. Then, perchance, said protoplasmic entity may wish to spend a fortnight in my company, exchanging excerpts from Kalevala while simultaneously fighting pullulating swarms of d00m, babeh!

Indeed, it is my heartfelt desire that such an event should come to pass. However, my grievance lies deeper than such a simple lack of resources, you see, I am currently encumbered with a machination of poor quality and weak constitution. To my fortune, in the time necessary for the moon to become full once I shall be rid of the beast, and will hopefully receive a new formation of technological components upon which I may interact more fully with my brethren. When this event occurs this protoplasmic entity will gladly spend a fortnight in your company whilst we wile the time away while reminiscing upon events past. (I will not be able to acquire said noxious potables, as my age is lacking to the point of illegality)

Wow, this is getting kinda dirty. I think this should be locked.

Alas, your misfortune is astounding. If it deigns you to acquire said machination in the proximate future, verify that the construct's holistic state sates your desires. If, god forbid, said machination sports basal software colloquially referred to as 'Vista', brace yourself for this inevitable truism; a loss in general performance will be noted.

Even with the entity known as 'Vista' residing on the machination, it would far outperform what is currently in my possession, whom's current activity speed could be considered equivalent to a tortoise with leprosy

Well I think the main inspiration is probably Aliens more than anything else. :)

Yeah, thats what I was thinking when I saw the model for the alien for the Source version... Hmm Zergling?

Well apart from the generic alien drone thing, which I guess does look like a zergling, its a lot of Aliens. Even has face hugger parasite things with matching eggs. :o
Gameplay certainly isn't anything like starcraft, thats for sure. ;)

Funny, I wonder from which source Blizzard derived their "unique" aliens. Hm.

From the brilliant and creative minds of their developers, where else... Blizzard made Sci-Fi, there was nothing else before it. Except for 'the Void'
