How will a computer with these parts run l4d?

Intel P4 3ghz
3gb ram
8800gtx 768mb
850w psu

I would be running it on 1920x1200.

would probably run oki

a guess would be 40-60 fps when few enemies.
the CPU is holding you back a bit.

Should run it fine, but again your CPU is holding you back quite a bit. You should have enough graphic power though.

Would it run better on this setup?

Amd athlon 64 x2 3800 2.0 ghz
3gb ram
8800 gtx
850w PSU

Yes It would run alot better on that setup.

Yes, but if you are going to take the time and energy to upgrade your CPU/Board, you might as well get something better.

Ok. I think the following setup would be good enough:

Intel C2D E8400
8gb ram
Nvidia 280gtx sli
850w psu

ya but i would at this point not bother with a dual core anymore most new games use a quad now so why not

Then I think that i7 would be fine.

ya for most things i7 is overkill but it will be good for a few years

what games offer better performance on a quad core than a dual core of the same price?

L4d crysis farcry 2 COD4 and 5 Stalker and most new games coming out

Intel C2D E8400
8gb ram
Nvidia 280gtx sli
850w psu

Skip sli 280 and go for a better combo of motherboard and CPU. like a x58 mobo with a i7 920 cpu. then you're set for a few year.

i would get a I7 build right now if you got the money lol the mobo are about 300$ then you need the new CPU that is 300$ min then you should get 6gb of tri chan. ram

L4d crysis farcry 2 COD4 and 5 Stalker and most new games coming out

NONE of those games run better on a quad core than a dual core of the same price. NO GAMES run better on quad cores than dual cores of the same price.

core 2 express quad 9650 same performance as slightly overclocked e8500 (e8400 can easily hit same speed lol)
$1030 for q9650, $190 for e8500 on newegg

that's not even comparable. why do you post silliness all the time goldkills? lol. i saw review of i7 920 (lowest end nihilum) and it was only slightly outperforming e8400, but for twice the price. e8400 also has more overclocking growth room, than most quad cores.

bah you don't seem to get it there are games that are better on a quad then a dual like GTA4 and yes games that use quads do use them better then duals(not left 4 dead tho b/c valve cant seem to get down the whole quad thing and it using more % on each core) and the I7 do have more head room for speed. the dual cores are a dieing chip i would say in maybe 2 years quad will be the norm
also if you say Crysis does not run better on a quad you must be crazy. a crazy powered video card cant do every thing on its own if you look at benchmarks the higher the speed and more cores the higher the scores
and for most people they cant get the E8500 to 5ghz to break the bottle neck its much easyer to break it on a quad

Well, today I tried running l4d on this setup:

Amd A64x2 3800+
2gb RAM
Ati HD2900xt
450w PSU

I don't know what I did, but it ran 150fps all maxed out (res. 1680x1050). LOL
