View Full Version : Idiots in L4D

I'm sure many of you play Zombie Mod for CS:S. It's similar to Left 4 Dead, and is a lot of fun. (For those who don't, clicky the linky) (http://www.zombiemod.com/)That said, it seems to bring out the worst in people...people will intentionally destroy barricades you've created, block you from getting into a safe area, and do all sorts of other mischief to get you zombified...there's just something about ZM that turns a lot of people into ***-holes who care about their survival and their survival only.
So, do you think this could be a problem in L4D? I know it's supposed to essential to survival that people work together, but it's the same in ZM (to an extent) and people still selfishly screw you over.

They won't be able to survive if they concentrate on their own survival. Problem solved.

People are ***holes. What more is there to say? You just have to make sure you screw them over before they get the chance to do the same to you.

This is going to be less of a problem because a player cannot go off on his own, no matter how talented. Infected players will be looking for anyone who even gets too far behind, if you go rambo on your own, you're gonna find yourself getting choked out by a smoker or such real quick. Only way out of that is going to be help from a team mate. They can try, but you won't see it much after someone plays just a few times.
hooray for zombies

also, people can't act selfishly without repurcussions, the demerit system seems to be a permanent record so if someone who has more demerits than can be accounted for normally (because noone will be able to avoid getting demerits entirely) their teamates will know that something's up with this guy and will probably kick him. I guess what I' saying here is that if you act like a total jackwad, you won't be doing it for long
SCMyDude
04-22-2007, 09:39 PM
but then they just change screennames and TADA there records are clean and they jerk people around again. this is the same kinda crap they pull when selling gold on EQ2 and WOW and stuff. professional douchebags have ways of slipping through all the filters. dont bother, you cant stop it. just do your best to not get totally pissed. Tell ya what, if i see that there doin it on purpose, ill sacrifice my OWN rep to pick them off. cause im weird like that. 8o(=)

Not sure how the records are kept permanent, Steam ID ,maybe startup name. Don't know much about how they plan to keep these records permanent.
Lets just hope the votekick system is a winner..

What i don't like in the system is that if i'm an utterly crap player and keep shooting at my own dudes by accident whilst still doing it unpurposefully, i will get a big stap on my forehead stating that i'm an idiot and should be kicked/banned from every server i join.
The system should give more room for second chances, as most human players do not :S

Hmmmmm... Maybe some kind of redemption system? Maybe if you can go a whole scenario and get many more merits than demerits, you could present a petition to get some of your more outstanding demerits removed.

I was already discussing this in my thread, not that i'm not saying to make another thread on this, just that the points I was making are very valid, and most people seem to just think they wont happen when they absolutely DO happen.
* There will always be A-holes
* You will need a super complex anti A-hole system to get rid of them
* A-holes NEVER learn anything constructive or smart, they do learn new ways of annoying though, don't you know that?
* Pixelnator makes a point which I addressed in my other thread, and that was that there should be a compulsary tutorial system, that way nobody has an excuse. Although pixelnator, apparently this is fixed because if you're shooting somewhere and your team mate runs in your way, apparently this doesnt count as a penalty to you, but a penalty to the other guy for running in your way. However, if you blatently shoot a team mate, it's your stupid fault. Accidental or not, you not know not to point guns at one another, let alone shoot them at one another. The fix they have in place is ALRIGHT, it's better than any other mp game system, but it could probably be better.
* The Votekick system will probably be abused, too bad if there are 2 idiots on a team working together to cause trouble, and the other 2 vote against one of those idiots, yet those 1 of those idiots, don't vote, the voting system is going to suck big time, it's different, there are less players, it's going to be easier to kick, and this will be a new thing for those idiots to play around with to annoy people.
* These idiots don't care about REPUTATION or score or whatever, they just care about making the game frustrating and annoying for other players, they are kids, no matter how old they are, they are kids, they act like kids, they're stupid, and annoying, and just don't get it (i'm not saying thats what real kids are like...although i AM close in some cases, as I teach martial arts classes filled with them). So they will never really grow up, obviously a screw is loose in their brain, they are bullies at school or just bullies in general, they have no care for life, they just like causing trouble, they are like the criminals of online gaming, and it's going to take a hell of a force to stop them going about their rampage of destruction.
There are other things that I could probably blabber on about, but I simply don't have the time right now. As for

Mostly because you aren't really adding anything at all to the discussion. If you had something incredibly insightful to say, that'd be different, but suddenly seeing a 'new' main thread that's actually just old news + one guy saying, 'lol I r agree' is tiresome.

Yeah gets VERY annoying when you revive a OVER ONE YEAR OLD THREAD just to add something completely obvious, or something that has been said already 100 times before (and also do it with extreme grammatical, punctual mistakes and leet speak).
</offtopic>
I'm pretty sure the Votekick would be our best bet, and the simple solution to the "2 idiots" scenario would be Admin powers (if an idiot is an admin, just leave, it's not worth it anyway).
Also a good thing would be something along the lines of America's Army honor system, such as if someone has too bad of a demerit:merit ratio, then they would not be allowed to join games with this setting on (but there should be some open servers for people to get merits to allow access to these servers).

yes, but I have seen people playing CSS ZM that care more about making sure you die than saving themselves...if this is the case with L4D, then we will be seeing some very un-fun gameplay.
People will just kill you because they can; they will headshot you until you die, and then when the team gets killed because there are only 3 people, the guy who TK'ed will yell at the dead guy for them losing.
That's how people are; they don't have a grain of sense in them.

There still is the merit/demerit system that will make it easy to avoid those guys...if it works properly that means.
The best thing is that if someone is an areshole they're not going to find their teammates being that supportive of them. If said arsehole gets pounced by a Hunter or lynched by a Smoker no-one's going to want to help them out. If he asks for a medkit people are just going to say "Medkit? Nah, I don't have one. What, this? This is my red lunchbox. No you can't have a sandwich, no. They're my sandwiches."
Problem solves itself.
(Apologies, but the thread had been revived, or reanimated, whatever you guys call it around here.)
Oh Hi and all that I'm new here. Can some friendly moderator or administrator take the "r" off the end of my name? Sign ups don't let me have my two-letter name.

I think such a small number as 4 lets you fill in all the player slots with friends, so that shouldn't be much of a problem. Of course, no matter what game you play, you'll find derks, so.....oh well :/

You know, if someone was being a total ass, a good solution might be to lock them in a room and try to run away from them. "Leave them 4 Dead" if you know what I'm saying.

Just a thought, but perhaps the a-holes in ZM aren't out to ruin your game but make the game an actual challenege...
e.g. that first infected vs all the humans is gonna die. But if they mess up a few other humans then they get a real fight....

From what I've heard, L4D will include a very robust voting system. Everything from votekick the clownshoe a-hole all the way through to a team vote to decide is Player X is allowed to use grenades or not (I've actually heard this, not sure where). The beauty part is, you only need to have three votes to make a decision (assuming the Infected won't be part of the Survivor decision making process and vice versa).
The best thing about L4D ... all the griefers now have a place to go (besides straight to Hell): the Infected side.
I'm sure TRS/Valve are aware of the massive griefing potential presented by a game like L4D, and I'm certain they will provide the playerbase with a no nonsense method to deal with it.
I really don't think it'll be a problem. Griefers will join the Infected side as being a griefer on the survivor side will only last as long as said griefer doen't get pounced by a Hunter, lynched by a Smioker or knocked down by any other means. The second anyone who is considered a griefer is taken down the other survivors will whistle and walk away and that'll be the end of it.

Additionally, I seem to recall hearing that merits/demerits are visible to all players before the game starts. Thus whomever started the server or has admin powers whatever simply kicks any known griefers before th game starts.

if one of my friends is being an ass, I will go into private chats with the two other (good) survivors, and count 1...2.....3! and just throw a bomb at him or just unload on him....problem solved :)

... then you get demerits that will in turn get your asses kicked out of more civilized servers. Not really the best solution. Though fun, I admit. =)

No. They are not thinking about making the game a challenge. Here is what is going through every a-holes mind.
"Hmm, this kid seems well barricaded, I think I'll blow it down and become the Last Man standing"
or
"That butt-face zombified me last round!!!!! AAARRRGHGHHGHGH!!!" *shoots barricade*
or
"I hope this kid has a mic so I can hear him cry when I get him zombified! LOLLOLOLLROFLLMAOLOLOLOLOLOLROFLLOLOLOLOL!!!!!"
or
"This game is stupid so I am going to piss as many people off as I can"
or
"My friend is over, so I am going to show off by pissing other people off and laughing about it! ROFL!!!"
Anyone wanna add to it? I think I covered most of them.

heres my opinion its like any game, when you and your buddies get together for the first time, there ganna screw around and kill each other and stuff, but once they realize how deep, scary, intense and fun the game is the'll work together much better. Me and my friends when we play together we screw around, when were on a team against others, we are as serious as life. So dont worry once they get their laughs out it will come together nicely.

Ok but now i have a question, Lets say theres a player whos not good, but trying his best. But he sucks, (and im sure there are hundreds of them) and he keeps dying and getting knocked down. Would it be right for his team to kick him just becasue he sucks, even if hes trying. Becasue theres two sides to a holes, not just anoying players, but jerks that think there better than everyone else. Do you think the server will specify like a skill level to put a bad player on, like halo 3 has rankes, and that really helps you think they would do that?

There are difficulty settings if thats what you're getting at. But the developers haven't stated explicitly how players will be 'ranked', just that past Awards and Demerits of fellow players will be somehow visible before a game. I don't think it's known whether you'll get the exact number of revives and friendly-fires etc., or a ratio of good to bad awards, or just some simple descriptors like 'co-operative' or 'selfish'.
Nevertheless, it will likely be a good indication of griefers, that is, as long as it can't be reset or falsified.
