please help me! online problems [Archive]

Ok... I have every single source engine game i have running on full everything (models shaders ect.) just fine when i play single player and against bots and shit..

But as soon as i try to play online the game locks up after about 5 or 6 seconds.. and its not a connection problem or anything because i see all the players walking around scores and all that jazz untill it freezes.

The graphics card on this computer is like... out dated to the max (directX 7) but most games still work on it... and i know its not a graphics thign because.. once again it runs great on single player.

THe only thing i can think of is that this is the host computer for the network in my house (of 3 computers).. like.. the other 2 computers go through this one to get to the internet... if you get what i mean, i dont know to much about computers but im sure some one will understand.

Help will be greatly apretiated and if you fix it i will give you the biggest vituall hug everrr.

Also, make sure all your drives are up to date - including motherboard drivers for chip-sets etc.

I'd just get a new card, or as people have already said... dumb down the graphics. I don't see a computer being able to play the game on high, DX7 otherwise, on single player and then completely crash online. Try checking your FPS online in an empty game and start adding bots... if it works its probably not your graphics and your internet.

That being said however, if you're comparing HL2 single player, to CS:S multiplayer, CS:S requires a more beefy video card compared to HL2...

That happens to me too sometimes, when I join a game and for a second I stop but can see people moving around me, then they stop eventually also... It's ALWAYS my internet connection. Which is crap.

Indeed you do, but your system doesn't crash from doing certain things. And it's never a thing you can't explain or know to why it happened. It either overheated, or stopped working all together. Or can't read the disk, that's 3 out of however many options! HA!HAHAHA!!!

Well such a simplistic machine can't have that many problems, surely you don't think the problems are entirely independant from the system. Of course a better machine would have more complicated problems. Seriously, haven't you had enough? Drop it why don't you. I'm pretty sure this came out in the half a dozen console vs. PC flames before, even if you had to read between the lines to see it.

Good point, a lot of the official CS:S maps added since release take more than the standard CS:S Minimum requirements to run, so they're no longer the same as HL2.

Consoles have downloadable content just as well
Nothing beats a HIgh definition television using 1080i
I like to relax and lie on my bed or floor when playing games, can't do that with a pc unless it's setup a certain way.
Consoles are NOT limited to genres.
And yes, I'm using a computer. I'm using the internet option of my computer because that is what a computer was intented for, internet usage. You make it seem like typing this has something to do with PC gaming being better, dumbass.

you dont get a pc gamer... if the game doesnt run, you fix it... you customize it the way you want, consoles are boring, well not all..... i quite like my wii ^_^ anyway, and upgrade sounds like a good idea.... are the servers kicking you?? maybe ping restricted?? what does it say in console? or does it crash to desktop? i agree with a previous post, set graphics to as low as you can and see if the problem is there.

it also could a firewall issue. as youre not getting bother offline. what firewall are you using ?

try a quick game with no firewall. remeber to do a full system scan afterwards in case and console fanboys have got into your pc by the backdoor.

PC's are superior, you must realize that?

And when you get L4D? You don't care about mods, have fun missing out on most of the content then, the only game where you will get mods is UT3 on the PS3 POSSIBLY 360... Developers dont release mods for console games, hence why they're THIRD PARTY.

You CAN watch television and cable/satellite with a PC, and you CANNOT do that as a FUNCTIONALITY of any CONSOLE.

Because their better machines. For MORE THAN ONE PURPOSE, you get what you paid for, when will you fanboys realize that? And consoles will cross their 'on par' threshold soon enough, and you will stop seeing quality in their games a lot faster than last generation.

One upgrade alone, perhaps to an 8800GTX will be pretty close to the longevity of a console in general, and you will not NEED another graphics card until a long time, that graphics card will already, and always outperform the Console graphics. So why are you even telling is this? It's an arguement against your own.

You can relax just as fine with a PC.

Edit: Damn fanboy, atleast hes not 360 exclusive. Btw, your gay too... since when did you say you were NOT gay? A 'generation' ago you would have not been able to play L4D, or barely any online game... I suppose you weren't a fanboy then were you? Or perhaps you were, and sadly more deluded in context.

In terms of games, the flagship Gears of War is already being outstripped by its PC version... And even the Pc version is still barely a match for Crysis.

Typing does make PC gaming better, because we can communicate sans the headset, you can't, as effectively. Dumbass.

I didn't say anything about a PC, I was talking about PC gaming. From now on let us all make sure we get that correct. I'm tired of arguing, but it's as simple as this.

Pc gaming isn't better than console, console isn't better than pc gaming. It's called an opinion, mine is that consoles are better, yours is that Pc gaming is better. It's once again ALL opinion. No technical specs will ever show which is better because once again... it is OPINION.

Any way heres whati tried...

UPDATING DRIVERS (nothing.. they where allready upto date any way)

RUNNING IT IN WINDOWED MODE.. Wich worked but sucked anus because you couldnt see a thing cuz its so small.. wich makes me think its my graphics card now

TAKING MY FIREWALL OFF - nothing

HITTING IT A FEW TIMES - power cord fell out :(

PLAYING XBOX INSTED - woot Forza motorsport 2

... so yeah im like.. pretty sure its the graphics card now... But i dont understand how battlefeld 2 runs fine (low graphics but) and cs:s / garrys mod / insurgancy dosnt.

Source games online tend to take more system usage than offline, try turning the graphics down a little and see if it helps. Also, the system requirements may vary on custom maps depending on their size and how well they're optimised.

That's correct, That happened to me until i got my geforce 8600, dual core processor 2,5 ghz and 2 gb ram, I had to lower the Dark messiah grafics to the lowest in order to play good.

Now that's happening to my friend from cordoba, who bought dark messiah the other day for 20 € T_T

Multiplayer always needs a better processor

I estimate around Aus$700, based on a price of £300 which I found on google. But with your current card being DX7, there's a good chance things in your PC wont be compatible with an 8800, so you could end up having to buy a completely new PC.

Ok, it might be useful to know your full system specs.
Processor, motherboard, RAM, graphics card etc.

Try turning all your graphics settings down to minimum, and joining a game. If you still have the same problems, then its unlikely to be graphics card related.

What ping are you getting?

768MB ram
Ati radieon xpress 200 (so old they dont even let you download drivers on ati site :/)
PCIE i think (the computer came with the graphics built into it.. its a fairly new computer other than that)
um... what else

It says the motherboard is

I never even heard of it :/ so ..

The software i have for it is direct X9 but its hardware level is direct X7 (thats what cs:s told me any way)

So it still must work, it is like... on lowest graphics and is a bit slow on the recation (a slight delay from my mouse to actually moving on the screan)

Having difficulty finding out much about that motherboard.

Am guessing you've got a 512mb chip and a 256mb one? If so I'd ditch the 256mb one and buy another 512mb one of the same make and timings. You can then run it in dual channel mode.

Upgrade the graphics, check ebay for decent but maybe slightly older cards that will still run DX9 games well.

If you've got the cash, I'd change the mobo as well personally. That bus speed looks very low.

Yeah its dodgy eh, the people who frucking built ther computer were ment to put two 512's in, but they diddnt for some reason and they refused to fix it because i opened up the computer and they said that cancells the warrenty... wich dosnt even make sence scince they gave me the wrong thing in the first place. But the computer was cheap so i cbf arguing.

COD2 and Insurgency lag for me online (always over 100 ping), but CSS doesn't. Anyone know what could be causing this? I fixed my Insurgency rates to my CSS rates but my ping is still high.

Who made your computer? Who the fuck thought of that idea of a cancelled warranty upon release? Here's a product, but if its just a piece of cheese in there you can't sue us because we cancel warranty before you can actually see it.

Indeed. The warranty being voided by the opening the case (which makes sense) seems like something that should have been irrelevant when there's a 256 instead of a 512. If I made a mistake like that I'd have rectified it and then thrown in some cheap blank media or something. Regardless of voided warranty.

Turns out i have a compleatly diffrent problem to what i thought

I just opened up my computer again too see the ram stick things.
and they both are 512's? Wich ment only 768 of it was showing up. WTF
And now its saying 382mb of ram is there... WTF MORE?

Your RAM is bad. Applications tend to crash randomly when you have bad/incompatible RAM. There is a free Memory checker in this URL.

IF the program says your RAM malfunctions or has errors, you either have to remove one of the two sticks and check them both individually and throw the other one out, or replace both sticks. You might want to get a new graphics card too because Source was built for DX8 and up. DX7 may go all wonky and I doubt you will be able to run the new source engine with it properly.

Source was built for DX8 and up. DX7 may go all wonky and I doubt you will be able to run the new source engine with it properly.

I did every single level in HL2 and was able to play counter strike and my only graphical problem was water and reflections off anything looked purple.

And that program, do i have to put it on a disk to run it :/? like ubuntu
