I recall either frog or squerl saying something along the lines of "you wont outrun the infected". So I would guess yes they are. Maybe not alot, but definately enough to keep the game from becoming "RUSH THE CHECKPOINT! SAVE AMMO FOR THE FINALE!" which would be boring.

Even if you're moving at similar speeds, the sheer number will most likely drag you down if you try to run. It doesn't matter how fast we say they are. We were told how fast they'd be and we were still shocked. You will be too.
