View Full Version : VALVE: New tank spawn system ruins atmosphere! Please fix.

I have never complained about anything on the forums yet. I'm not quick to do that. This was forced to be my first. The recent patch was awesome, thank you, except for this one imperative issue. Making the tank spawns identical for both teams has flattened versus atmosphere. I can say this based on several full versus rounds on my own server.

Knowing where the tank & witch are, takes away the majority of the scary & surprise feeling in the game. Who the heck says it has to be equal for both? Wasn't the point of the AI director to cleverly monitor both teams and their progress, then throw problems their way if they were doing too well? That's not "fair" from a competitive point, but who cares, majority plays this game for the fun and atmosphere of it. Hell, why not place every molotov, every health pack and every zombie in the same place too while you're at it

Quick proposal for options that could be controlled by server cvars or lobby settings:

1) Tanks & witches equal. As it stands now. Fair, predictable and boring.

2) AI directed spawns. Allmighty AID decides where and when they appear. He might favor the weaker team a little, to discourage quitting as soon as your team isn't winning. Then again it might be completely random. Whatever, as long as nobody knows!

3) Infected team vote. Team is asked "Spawn tank now? Y/N" at suitable moments during game (AID decides when to allow a vote)

Please, just don't leave it as it is. There's a huge number of us very saddened at the present drop in game atmosphere.

Thanks..

I think the major problem with the tank spawns prior to the patch was that some locations were clearly worse than others. Take No Mercy 4, roof : a tank spawning up there is pretty hard to deal with, because you have an extra factor to take into account, which is the possibility of being thrown off the roof and die instantly.

Now when than happens to me as survivor, while my team as infected gets the tank in an indoor yet spacy area, getting taken down within seconds - that really pisses me off.

So I dunno ; I do agree with you that the new system takes some of the spice away, but it does remove, to some extent, the "luck" factor.

I guess I don't think the new system is better or worse, just different.

As for new systems ? I guess voting is an interesting idea, but I have my doubts on how well it would actually work.

It's fun for the team with the well placed tanks but it reeks of injustice for the game I played a few weeks back where as survivors we received 2 tanks (yes 2) before getting none when we were infected.

well you know that idea is well not that good imagine a bunch of people join a game vote for tank starts ...... Y/N? well its kinda obvious

I will say that whoever gets to be the Infected first gets the upper hand because they know when (and where) the tank is going to appear.

I played last night and I had a tank spawn against me right at the beginning of NM2... /facepalm

i'm glad to see the luck factor is gone. But i thougt the best way to correct this problems would have been to spawn tank with timer. Two teams don't go with same speed.

I don't if this already happenned to anyone, once i was on fire as a hunter then I was chosen to be the tank, I 'entered' the tank but I was still on fire...

The other team told me the molotoved me but they don't know what they were talking about, as I spawned as tank like 50 meters away not even at their sight.

Has it already happenned to anyone else ?

Also, personnally I prefer to play survivors first, dunno why but my team wins all time this way.

you chose time they chose distance.

A question like this should be asked with a poll and you will have your answer.

The tank spawns make the game equal now. Instead of only one team getting to face the tank without t2, they both have to now. Ruins the atmosphere my ass. It makes it equal. Why should my enemies team have to face the tank with 4 auto shotties and 2 mols while we get it a minute into the map with 4 pump shot guns and jack. Seriously.

And come on, the tank spawn is not really a suprise anymore, and if your team is decent, you can easily take him out. I'm tired of the nub team winning because they get better tank spawns. Now its fixed.

Go play campaign if you want to have fun. Plus your suggestion of letting the AID favor the losing team totally makes a teams skill useless, because if you do good, the AID will be easy to the other side. Thats bull. Let the noobs ragequit when they get pwned. Teach them a lesson. The atmosphere remains the same.

Take no mercy 4 for example. There are 3 general tank spawns for that map. The 2nd level, the 3rd level, and up top. I find it hard to believe that you are so shocked when you encounter a tank on that level. Or if you dont get a tank before the elevator, and dont expect to get one up top.
9/10 times, if you dont get a tank in the first 3 floors, you get one in the construction area. So give me a damn break.

I agree tbh, even if you're team is doing absolutely great, we wont get a tank if the previous survivor team didn't had one, so we don't have to fear anything tbh

They should make it spawn randomly, but if the survivors are at least at around 40-50% , so the tank can spawn from 40-50% till 100% ..

Like this there wont be tanks spawning when the survivors are still in the saferoom & stuff (happens alot on no mercy 4)

1. The Tank spawns at the same %, not the same place. They can be very different places depending how spread out their team is versus your team. It's still random enough. Plus if you can't hear the tank coming you're not paying enough attention.

It is a bit weird that you won't get a tank if they don't but, then again, why should you? I can't tell you how many times before my teams were buttraping the other team all day long, even though they didn't get a tank, and then BAM we would get a tank in the worst possible spot and get screwed by some retard. That doesn't show up in points but it seems hardly fair to be obviously dominating a team for map after map for a full hour and have it go down the tubes in about 10 seconds.

2. The witch bit is a bit odd. I'm tempted to say that knowing where the witch spawns favors the first infected team but, let's face it, the witch is not an issue. A monkey could crown her, and if you can't, go watch the videos of it and practice it for 5 minutes locally with god mode on. It's not complicated.

Weapons aren't equally spawned, so that still happens...

I personally am dating the directors sister, so I get all the pipe bombs and molotovs, plus the better guns, ammo, kitz, and so many pillz we have a fall back point.

1st: Versus mode isn't really supposed to have the same atmosphere as campaign. Its players vs. players, FPS's at their best. Hence the reason to even out both sides.

2nd: Knowing where the tank & witch are
The update says they spawn the same %, not the same spot. They will not always spawn in the same place that the other team had. It means that if the other team had a witch or a tank, so will yours.

Happened to me too. Damned AID favouring random publics over my counterstrike hardened FPS ADD clan members. For shame! It actualy evened things out!

Now at least when youre the better team it is easier to see as the other team can't use excuses about lucky spawns and such. You both get the same treatment. So I don't know, I see your point but I'm slightly in favour of the new system.

I don't know what game you've been playing, but every L4D game I've played, you get the weapons in the same spots. Maybe not med kits, mollys, pills or pipes, but Tier 2 weapons, yes.

I'm in favor of the new system. I'm also in favor of Valve fixing the random occurrence of spawning in a location where you cannot get to the survivors. Played a game yesterday where on NM4 the tank spawned midway down the hospital OUTSIDE. Absolutely no way to get to the survivors and the tank ended up just going away after two of us were not able to get anywhere with him.

i agree with the tank, just because now you know exactly where it will be, and have ample time to prepare for it. unless theres some real coordination between the infected (many times, there isnt) tank just gets rolled

You realize that people were complaining about THE EXACT FUCKING OPPOSITE before the update?

I think what we should take away from this is that people will never be satisfied and that Valve has done a good job.

It's my belief that many of the people who are complaining now are the exact opposite of the people who complained before the patch: people who have trouble communicating and creating a coherent strategy for defeating the tank.
