View Full Version : Viral Outbreak (HL2 Zombie Mod)

Hi guys, new to the forum here, some may know me as RawDog, I'm also the clan leader of YMU.
The last half a year, me and my mod team have been working on a underground zombie mod, before you go "omfg another zombie mod, when will they stop, none of them will finish". Trust me, I'm mad about that to, most likely none of the good looking mods will come out, or will not be as good as they look when they do, 4 years in development and all NMRiH team has to say is some good maps from darth, zombie models, weapon models. We've been working for almost half a year, zombie models done, weapons done, some maps done.
Before you go start yelling how Left for Dead will destroy this game and such, this is not a linear zombie game, no boss monsters, this mod is running zombies, the whole point is to survive in the huge maps, you need food, weapons and ammo ofcourse, and making good barricades, this will be a different experience Left for Dead will supply. This mod was also being planned before Left for Dead was announced.
We have a couple maps done already, and some still in development, I'm the lead mapper here, we have not released any screenshots yet as it will keep quiet, we have a wiki, and a web site under development, once we've gotten a bit further we will be releasing trailers, game play footage and such. As well an open beta may be being planned, depends on how much the community desires the game.
We have a full team put together already so you most likely wont get in the mod team, unless you are over qualified, hey it doesn't hurt to try.

Now before you judge, this is not like the majority of other zombie mods out there, we have a full team, working hard and going strong, there's a 90% chance you will be playing a stable version of this in less then a year.
By the way, congrats to one of our Programmers, TheNox, his indie gaming company recently got a 3million dollar contract from Lucas arts. Hopefully he sticks with us :P.

When I say a year, I mean completely finished, everything we want to do will be done, we will most likely have a beta before Christmas. We almost finished our internal alpha, but nothing will be public until the beta.

It sounds great, and it sounds different enough from L4D to not get crushed by it. I hope all goes well, and that I manage to get in on the beta if it only has limited public access. :P

Yeah thanks, we most likely get people we trust in on the beta, but you never know, we may release it to the whole public. Thanks guys for understand what we're going for here, we're close to an alpha.

I hope this gets somewhere. Like you said, NMRiH is making 0 progress it would seem. But from what you say this could turn out to be everything i have been looking for in a zombie mod.

We haven't given the wiki link yet because we're just polishing it up with lots of info on maps, weapons, and such. We may release wiki with website, but sure yet however.

So can you tell us how the basics of the game work? If you get caught do you instantly join the infected/zombie side, or do you have health that goes down until you die?
What are the objectives? Survive until time runs out or kill all zombies?
Have you any thought on how to stop players from barricade destroying? One of the main gripes of current CSS zombie mod is when a few players barricade a room, then some n00b throws a grenade in and destroys it.

We are not releasing any info at this time on the mod, it will remain quiet for a bit of time until we get up to alpha, once we know for sure what we are doing we will send out screenshots, videos, etc.

The third paragraph of the starting post (the one starting with "Before") tells me its objective based, get supplies and get the hell out of there without being eaten alive. With a few twists.
- Free roaming around the map. (L4D opted for a slightly more linear approach in favour of helping people not get lost and intensifying action, but so long as the maps aren't over complex this shouldn't be a problem for most people)
- Being able to build barricades to hold off the horde.
- Having to get supplies, or else you incur some kind of penalty. Like being eaten alive because you don't have any bullets.
None of the concepts seem particularly original by themselves. But originality isn't a strong suit in most zombie games anyway, so as long as they put it together well it should be awesome.

He's absolutely correct, this zombie mod is different from the others in a couple ways, it's different from Left for Dead because Left for Dead is a completely linear experience, only one way through the map, and it's different from the other unreleased zombie mods because this zombie mod will actually come out... lol. This is also different from Zombie Master because its a full conversion, all models, textures, animations and such are different, the only thing resembling the original Half Life 2 is the menu.

We're actually now thinking of releasing the alpha public because alot of the community is not supporting the wait, we don't want to lose you interest, we were aiming for all the planned maps to be done before we release, but we may just get our other things done and release, nothing official yet. It may still be a month or two.

Even if its just a single level alpha release, the feedback you get would be really helpful (i'd have thought) in how the objectives would work out, the barricading, weapon effectiveness/ammo etc etc.

No not at all, but you basically play a role in your team, 1 med kit (heals about 5-8 times) is available at spawn, 2 shotgun are available (depending on amount of players in game, ex: less then 4 people and there's only 1 shotgun), pistols are available to everyone and there's one strong weapon available for someone without a current role (med, cover(shotty), etc). Left over people are assigned spotter role or errand boy (lawl).
Update - Role System and Weapon System -
Detailed Explanations on Classes:
Spotter: Assigned a flashlight and a pistol, a flashlight must be held and not pressed with F button, think like Doom 3, when u melee with Flashlight you make the zombie ragdoll, you need proper timing or it will knock you down into a struggle for life, from then you press a random button combination that appears on screen to stay alive until your teammates help you. After 30 seconds you die. Spotter also can find his special weapon which is either Glock 17 with flashlight attached, or Usp Compact with Flashlight attached, this makes you able to shoot and spot at once.
Cover: Assigned a Shotgun, random either M3 or XM1014 (not the css models, custom models), this job is to work with spotter and eliminate zombies to help the other roles do their jobs, their special weapons are the normal shotguns with Slug rounds instead of Buckshot rounds, and they have flashlights attached. They also have a melee attack with primary weapon.
Medic: Assigned one of the original pistols and a med kit, it has the ability to heal teammates when low on health, and stop the infection once antidote in the level is found, most levels don't have the antidote in it as it's not seemed fit. Special weapons are the antidote (not really a weapon), Mac11 (with flashlight), and flashlight upgrade for pistol.
Cover (Strong): This class gets the random strong weapon, 1 of 3 rifles, with backup sawed-off shotgun, he also gets 1 m67 frag and incendiary grenade. This role is just simply to be the muscle of the team, the main fighting force. Upgraded weapons are more powerful rifles, with flashlight upgrades. They also have a melee attack with primary weapon.
Errand Boy(s): 4/10 of the team are these guys, these are the one's getting ammo and such, one gets a shotgun, other just get pistols (upgraded pistols, better then default, better accuracy and power). Their job is just to get ammo, food, etc based off game type.
It is random every time, and you cannot bet the same class twice, thrice, in a row, unless low on players. This mod allows 14 players total. You can pick up dead teammates weapons and use them no matter what class you are.
The role system is implanted to decrease the weapon, aha i call it the weapon vulture affect, in zm everyone rushes weapons and it reminds me of discovery channel when vultures snarl and fight for the dead food.
Zombie Info will be released soon, just a sneak peek, zombies flinch from body shot, but only die from head shots, when you head shot them the back of the head usually comes out with guts and such.

It's all iron sights, with red orchestra style aiming, so you need to use iron sights to get accurate shots, it's really hard, when they're close and you spray it's hard to hit them making shotguns and handguns the most useful weapons close range.

This aint a spray game, trust me if you spray your dead, this game is really hard we might have to easy the AI a bit. There are batteries for the flashlight, but it takes awhile for the flashlight to run out, it's shown a percentage for the ammo.

Lol, there are batteries but the only time you'll need it is when your on really long missions, 1 survival mission is 30 minutes long (Resident Evil 4 Village).

No it only consists of W - A, D - S, D - W, L Mouse - R Mouse, and Space - W, I think that's all, we did have Shift in there but most people have sticky keys on (make you minimize game after you press shift 3 times repeatedly) so we took it out.

BTW, I updated the update, both Cover roles can use a melee move with their weapon, it causes the zombies to ragdoll, if it hits other zombie they may fall over to or move out of the ragdolls way.

They are not dismember able, originally it was planned but instead we made a wicked gore system, now we do have a dynamic AI spawning system, I can't say yet though.

Yes it truely is one of our best if not the best, plus it uses RE4 models and textures so its basicly the same village from the game, except better.

No, what happens is the gun comes up onto the screen, on the right side, the left side blinks (simulating blinking the opposite eye of the one that is aiming) and you have half a screen to aim, the gun is centered on that half of the screen, I am very experienced in firearms (Canadian Reserve) and this is the most realistic attempt to simulate firearms in games I've ever seen.

Well if he's trying to hit an Insurgent 500m away hiding behind some mud walls, it won't end good, there's a reason there's sights on the top of weapons, hip aiming is so old fashioned, that's why the WW2 ended up so bad because the Germans were so well trained.
When both eye's are open you see the world in three dimensions, when you close one of your eyes you lose depth perception, you have to be seeing in two dimensions when handling a weapon, or your shot won't be straight.

the great thing about this site is no one will flame you, most people will support you and or be interested, to be honest i cant wait it sounds sick. as soon as you release any screen shots or a beta let me know.

Summary of the mod. Ok. You are randomly assigned a role based on what weapons are on the map, if you miss out on all the good ones you are going to end up an errand boy or spotter. You follow objectives like barricading your hideout or something like that or you're gathering food or equipment necessary to escape the map. You must work together to eliminate zombies because they can only be killed by a headshot(the way it should be). So going to way of so many "co-op" mods where the idea is to play the game with other people, teamwork is optional. Like Left 4 Dead this mod seems like you will need to cover each other and work together to get out alive. There's a mediocre summary of the mod from my reading of the forum in about 15 mins lol. THIS MOD WILL BE AWESOME!

Well this mod is not dead to all of you out there, D_Smid is banned so yeah... they have a site ( http://vomod.exofire.net/ ) and are very active on FPS Banana, (http://www.fpsbanana.com/studios/1449 ), this mod seams to be doing really well and looks promising, this RawDog (D_Smid) knows how to get things done, to bad he was such a dick.

How so? Steal a concept done in hundreds of other servers, claim it as his own, and make it well known on this forum for being run by a prick? Genius.
It wasn't even a mod, it was a series of plug-ins, mini-mods, scripts and custom skins for CS:S. There's a tutorial to do this on your own server anyhow.
Edit: Unless you mean his genuinely new concept for the TC (I've been talking about his server, considering that was the main topic in this... well err, topic) Because it's not all that genuine, he probably read a couple posts from a couple people here, I know I've mentioned the same thing and decided, hey what the hell?
His only chance for that TC to fly is if it comes out before L4D, it probably wont. And it that case, it'll easily get run down by a simple mini-mod that can do all those things. Even a couple scripts to alter running speed and health. He'll realize by the time L4D comes out he would have saved himself 75% of the work and should have just modded L4D.
I can tell you this though: the mapping on the mod, currently, looks really nice... I'd like to see a map like than in L4D, in fact, I'd like to see any other map from L4D (hopefully with some sunlight) Which err, apparently isn't done by him(ModDB and his website are arguing with eachother), although im guessing the annoyingly caps excessive text on their website is.

And he's only had a team (according to him) for three weeks for now and they've already done this, he says they just got a coder and the game will playable in a couple weeks when some weapons get skinned apparently.

That's another thing, what do you guys think about the whole way Left 4 Dead is, now I know it has the Director, and that will make the game different every time, but your running through the same map, I think that's a pretty big weakness, but it should still be good.

How exactly do you know this, it probably will, considering the potential for user content.
I said that because half his game IS Left 4 Dead. Left 4 Dead already has 20 maps, and you probably will be able to choose spawns. The Director decides what to do with the Infected, but you still need to see how they get in the map. (Over fences and whatnot) Unless thats completely random too.

Clearly Nick is just a friend of Smid and enjoys his mod (which hes doing a good job with). What he did or who his friends are aren't important in this situation. There are others who, as Nick shows, participate in the chat or forum that are part of his steam group and we have no problem with (Nick is very welcome here).
For the record, problematic posts are locked or deleted and would not come up in a search.
Regarding the fanbase, L4D is an unreleased, original IP. We can only guess at how large the fanbase may become.

I sent them a support ticket a while back about it and they even said themselves they won't, it's not up to TRS, everything TRS does Valve needs to approve, Valve will not release an SDK for source based games, it is up to the 3rd party company (TRS in this case) to choose whether or not to include map support (which they did), but they can't actually offer up an SDK, now I know there is mini mods and stuff but you will never see new models, and I promise you that.
We can only guess at how large the fanbase may become.
The fanbase will grow but it probably won't grow larger then tf2 or css/cs.

If what you say is true, it'd be a shame to limit the usability of the Director(althought it makes sense that TRS might not want to give that out so freely), but mods can still be done, if people can get that giant weird ass thing from GoW into the SDK, they'll have no problem getting something already built on the Source engine in there.

No, you could only do that on VAC secured servers, and the fact that servers you can only download max 10kb/s thanks to VAC and a decent gun model and skin is AT LEAST 5mb or more there won't be custom skins.... period. Plus CS:S has had a huge fanbase for years and they have never had gun models for download, also if you downloaded a gun model/skin it would replace the one you had (can be removed by deleting from the directory) which most noobs don't know how to do. You can have custom PLAYER skins with mani admin because that is the only logical thing, haven't you noticed that the custom skins are crappy and low detailed? It's because that's the only type of skins that they can allow for download or people would be sitting there for literately and hour downloading one model.

No, they have skins from other games that look exactly like the originals.
Point was, all you need are scripts/plug-ins/mini-mods to make the game more 'realistic' whatever that means. And I don't doubt that TRS will make as much of their game available to modders. Pretty much his mod = L4D+Plug-ins, minis and scripts for 'realism' and objective based maps, which isn't unheard of. The only thing you might be missing out on is his choice on weapon models.

In one game no, and compared to the other two titles having 3 or more, no one expects it to. (CS:S, CS, CZ and the old UT mod, and TF2, TFC and the original Quake mod)

Actually, I think that barricading will be easily accomplished in L4D.
What's more, if there's a file cabinet tipped over in front of a L4D zombie, I'm told he will hop over, instead of standing there.
Also, destructible doors and checkpoints will add a lot to L4D.

Half of that I don't want... and what does Zombies meant to fit on maps mean exactly? Now that you meantion it, sounds like NMRiH over again... that might be good or bad depending on how you see it, NMRiH is a great concept, but it won't ever be done. L4D>Both mods.
Even though a modded Left 4 Dead could achieve this in half the time he will.

For further clarification also note that "You might be" and the fact that objectives are objectives, doesn't matter if they're coded or map based whatever the significant difference is, and that no one is missing out on bigger maps. How long do you really think it'll be until TRS start releasing different maps?
