Thats strange..... Try restarting steam, if that dont work then re install. Cause there should be a thing there saying to upload and browse

I have created a quick guide for people who are having issues.
In order for you to see anything from the beta, you must have beta participation checked.

In order for you to get to this option first go to: Settings, Account, Beta Participation.
Beta Participation should be under Login as a different user.

Now if you wish to upload an avatar then you must first go to: Community (which should be next to Store and my games) then Edit Steam ID (which should be at the top of your Community screen. Then scrol down to see upload avatar. Recently I have talked to spoobig,Teknobry, and Stupoider in our 411 group and they said that the uploader crashed. So I have no idea how long it will be like this, but hopefully it will be fixed soon.

Now finally if you wish to join the L4D411 group on the steam community
go here (https://steamcommunity.com/groups/l4d) then click join this group. I tired clicking the big join tab but it seems like its not working right.

Uh, just installed the Steam Community beta.. (restart steam, click on 'settings' on the bottom, click 'change' under betas and do Steam Community)..


Anyway, created a group if any of you can figure out how to join.

The Community beta makes my game crash:( after a few seconds on css it crash's with skiping sound, then a message comes up saying HL2.exe application error could not referance memory at blah blah. Hope it don't happen with the final release!

After the 2nd reset my PC broke down the second I connected to Steam...and than took around 15 minutes to restart.

When you open a game, it runs another file. it's gameoverlay.exe, overlayui.exe, something like that. (I cant check the name because I cant access my steam yet).

That file is used to display all the in game overlays, sort of an easy way of being able to show the overlay in any steam game without it having to run on the source engine.

So once you've opened a game, if you open the task manager (ctrl-alt-del) go into processes and then right click > end process on the file used to display the overly, it should fix your crash, and any lag it causes, by disabling the overlay.

(It will give you a warning about closing it causing undesirable effects, it does that for everything. So long as it's called something like gameoverlay, overlaygame, ingameoverlay, overlay, or any of those with UI added to it, it should be the right one.)

EDIT: This should work for you as well asu.

Or try logging into the community system in your browser manually, Steam can't make anything but its own inlaying version of IE automatically be logged in. But remember, if the site isn't steamcommunity.com, "it's a trap!".

Why else would there be public betas? if not to weed out any bugs or crashes which slipped past the internal beta. It's impossible for anyone to test their software on every possible hardware/software combination. :P

I keep hearing about the BSoD's as a result of the overlay a lot, so its probably quite common, I doubt you need to worry about them not fixing it before steam community (or at least the overlay part) is released fully.

I donlt know if this will help anyone but when i have issues with souce games crashing it is normilly because of spyware. So for those of you above i would give that a quick check and see if it helps at all. But if just may be a conflict with the beta. make sure you put it in your feedback :)

Are you sure you were in the right chat? The official group is a mess. It's all the pirate's go-to place. In the 411 group (Left 4 Dead (https://steamcommunity.com/groups/l4d)) those people usually get banned without a second guess.
