So what will hool10 be playing when he's blasting zombie skulls apart? Well this is what I have for a computer currently:
Manufacturer:
Shuttle
Processor:
Pentium 4 2.80 GHZ
Memory:
1 GB
Hard Drive:
127 GB
Video Card:
ATI X800XL 256 MB
Monitor:
Sceptre 22" HD Widescreen gaming edition
Sound Card:
Realtek AC'97 Audio
Speakers/Headphones:
Platronics Gamecom Pro 1
Keyboard:
HP Wired Office Keyboard
Mouse:
Logitech Marble Mouse
Mouse Surface:
Glass desk
Operating System:
Windows XP Home Edition (Service Pack 2)

It's a loud shoe box sized computer that overheats even with the case off. Only AGP and the USB drives are broken. So I decided to make my own computer (again) and went with newegg (again). I got these components: URL (http://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/wishlist/PublicWishDetail.asp?WishListNumber=7309927)
I got the Antec 900 case which cools very good and even has 2 water-cooling holes in the back. The CPU will never have to be upgraded again because it's quad core. I have a fanless CPU cooler to cool it. I decided I didn't need any extra noise in the case and it cools very well. The video card is the famous 8800GTX and is a monster. Power supply I don't care about but it's silent and does its job. My mobo has DDR3 or DDR2 with HD audio. 2GB of dual channel gaming RAM. Windows Vista Home Premium and Halo 2 because I liked the original lol. I should upload pics on Friday when I get it all running so stay tuned! Also I'm getting $45 in rebates and I got a $20 instant savings as well. *My dad is giving me a 500GB HD he has laying around too.

Nice. I have the same heatsink, it's amazing (and WAY bigger than I was expecting). I run my E6420 at 3.4ghz all the time nice and cool :D

GAH! I need to learn how to overclock... My 6420 is running at the normal 2.13ghz... I want at least 2.8.

And grats on the new comp! I also have the Antec 900 case hehe. It's incredible. I don't mind the noise, even at night, so I run the fans at full speed all the time, and everything runs great even under heavy load for 3+ hours.

Which heatsink is it? Scythe Ninja? Tuniq Tower? That Thermaltake monstrosity? I've always wondered about those fanless heatsinks ... I'm running a Zalman 9700 + a fanspeed controller. I can dial it down to 1400 rpm and it's damn quiet, but I can ramp it up to 2400 rpm during load times.

That won't be too bad at all - in fact, I just upgraded my computer to pretty much the same. I purchased a AMD Athlon x2 64 6000+ 3.0GHz, 2 more gigs of ram (DDR2 DC), I went with the 8800GTS 320mb (I didn't see a need for the extra 1 or 2 hundred dollars for the GTX), and a 700W+ PSU.

I can tell you now, though, that you might want to go with a 700W+ PSU yourself, with the parts you are using the 650 might barely pull that off!

Also: First post, hi everyone! (Loooooooooong time lurker, never a poster.. my bad.)

Wahey another Antec900 user :)

i love mine... got the 8800gtx too, only dual core 6600 though didnt see the point of quad for at least two years yet.. not got vista either im going to avoid that till at least service pack 1 is released. on the trusty tried and tested xp pro.

as for overclocking... i dont bother at the moment it laughs at everything i throw at it so there is no need to overclock just for forum braggin rights :).

im interested aswell as to what cooler youve got on ive been lookin at the chilltec peltier one

proving a bit hard to get hold of in the uk though.

The video card says it wants a minimum amout of 450W but it won't use that amount constantly. In reality it's about 350-400 watts.

The quad core CPU's are about as much as the dual cores. And I like Vista. My dad has it and the noly reason Vista doesn't run great is because of companies not getting their butts in order on the drivers. An yeah I won't have to OC for a while lol. Also I got the " Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme CPU Cooler". I heard it cools it to like 24C on air thats fanless. Fanless heatsinks ftw.

2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo
2 GB RAM
ATI X1900GT 256MB

Here

Not that good, but then it's over 1 year old.

I have no worries about being able to max out L4D on my 20" WS though since Source is the engine for the masses. Not as UE3 is, only for the "elitists".

Listen, I'm not insulting your intelligence or anything.. but believe me, I have knowledge in this area. Not only that but I myself am running a rig like his... in fact, less powerful than his, and a 650W+ wouldn't do it. So if my less powerful rig needed more than 650W+, then logically his would need even more than mine. I did three or four weeks of tech-forum posting before I built my rig with questions such as power supply issues, and every single reply that I got suggested that you need at least 30% over the requirements to be safe. Just saying..

Teknobry
08-09-2007, 12:46 PM
^^ that depends ENTIRELY on the quality of the power supply. Cheap ones saying they put out 700w can actually provide less power than a decent branded quality PSU rated at 500w.

Kenny
08-09-2007, 01:18 PM
Yep. Aspire is a crappy PSU, their 500W+ is probably more like 350W+ or 400W+. OCZ or TruePower are the way to go.

8bg of ram eh? Thats impressive....

You do realise, XP can't use more than 2gig i think, and vista's max is about 4.

Kenny
08-09-2007, 06:48 PM
Hehe, gotcha for sure on this one Teknobry! 32-bit systems (such as XP) support up to 4.. but it isn't very efficient right now. (Seriously.) 64-bit (Vista..) can handle 8 gigs.

u really should of gone with a better processor. at least duel core or somthing. because that processor is really dying down. i have the same one but i have a 3.4 ghz. a lot of games are goign to require a better processor very soon, maybe in a year. current games coming out wont be able to play at max either with that processor. but it is great for steam games though so if u just plan on playing left 4 dead and older/current games, then yeah good computer.

In the process of my first build, just need the processor to ship

Core 2 Duo 2.66
nForce 680i
FSB 1333
2gig Ram
8800 Gts 640

XP itself yes, but individual applications can be very ram hungry, such as cad applications (like I use at work) use ALOT of ram... i have 4gig at works and its barely enought for a 350 component assy to update quickly.

it all depends what you want to do with your pc really if u want to do CAD,rendering images editing or movie encoding and editing then 4meg is the Minimum you should have. if your playing games with nothing running at the same time the 2 is perfectly good enough.

8 is just trying to tack a few MM on your e-cock.

<div class="quote"><div class="quoting">Quoting: BigFinger;]LOL youve got a 900 case and your worried about fan noise ?

I really don't need any more noise. From what I heard in the reviews the stock cooler is noisy. The case fans arn't that noisy either and I heard it myself. You can adjust each fan and on low it's silent. On medium it sounds like a normal computer. On high it sounds very loud but that only lasts a very seconds to blow out the heat. The 2 fans on the front are blowing directly at the video card. The one on the back blows straight into my heatsink. The one on the top blows on it even more. Can't wait to see 3DMark on this puppy. I get 1FPS or 0FPS on this computer with 3DMark.

Clearly, you don't.

32 bit OS cannot physically handle any more ram, 64bit is needed. Kenny is right that vista 64 can handle 8gig. The problem is not many applications are configured for 64, and so cannot take advantage of the extra RAM.

You know what sucks? Newegg sucks thats who! When I got my components there was one $20 savings with 2 rebates. Now they have 2, $20 savings, 1 $17 savings, and 3 rebates. My mom says to contact them and say I should get the savings because these popped up only hours apart. What should I do? I'm pretty pissed off right now because I could have saved almost $200 by waiting a few fours more.

What's makes you think I have XP 32bit, did I say that, no. First I have an 8800gtx so why the **** would I be using XP, I mainly got it for Dx10.....

What makes you think I said you had 32 bit xp? I simply said 32 bit operating systems can't handle 8gig.

You then go on to say 'computer can be hacked if you know what you're doing' Implying that you can run 8gig on a 32bit system. Which you can't.

max is a hungry animal its true even with backburner over a network. managed to master all the post effects yet ?

i have a GTX i also have xp32pro,

vista issnt worth it yet.... not till SP1. 64 is over rated and undersupported specially for anyone who want to play games.

nvidia and ati were quoted in MCAD magazine (for the cad market) that they were 'very pleased' with thier new drivers and they had managed to acive 95 of the performance of thier xp drivers !

vista at them moment is pretty and thats all... wait till SP1 then migrate. keep your money safe (home premium is about £150) and by the time some DX10 games come out youll be able to chuck another few gigs of ram at it (i know that that should matter with you mr 8meg ;) )

but to the ordinary gamer the is no reason whatsoever if you BYO to build a vista machine yet... crisis comes out ? maybe then :) even so buying another opperating system to play one game makes that game cost nearly £200.

I simply said 32 bit operating systems can't handle 8gig.

you are right and wrong at the same time there... admit it ... OS wont utilize it all but individual apps will.

Just got this puppy up and going. Didn't have much time with it so far because of a concert on Saturday (Def Leppard, Styx, Foreigner in one concert). Today I'm probably getting all 4 wisdom teeth out too. :-( So far I can say that Vista runs like ass. It's using all 4 cores and it gave me a rating of 5.5 but it still runs poor.

It was just a consultation. My lower jaw is fucked up which gives me a very slight overbite (wouldn't know without the x-ray). They said they could cut the jaw and actually move it back and I said I didn't want that. Never knew you do that anyways. Anywho, they gave me the option of putting me to sleep or some shots in the mouth. They said that everybody chooses the sleep option so I picked that. Last time I went under was when I was 13 and they had to do a certain Jewish tradition (I'm not Jewish lol). Literally feels like Jesus Christ before you count down to zero and they put you out. Last time they put in 2 needles in my arm. This time it's one needle and they said they would slowly put me to sleep. The last time they had numbing cream this time they are putting some laughing gas in. I'm really nervous about all this. It's at 10AM on the 27th. *Oh and she said the height and weight is'nt that important. I said &quot;are you serious?!&quot; and she said &quot;nope&quot; but they later weighed me at 140.
