a friend of mine recently got Vitsta Ultimate, not sure if its with more than one game or his particular PC spec but, he used to run Cod2 at 270FPS and Vista has brought it down to 30. this could be because Vista needs alot more power and memory just to run. other games run the same or beter thanks to Vista. i was planing to get L4D for both the PC and xbox360, but my question is,

should i upgrade to Vista before i get L4D?

i kno it will just be a guess untill we get the information from Turtle Rock, but do you guys think it will run beter with Vista or XP?

Are you planning on using DX10? (do you have a dx10 card?)

If not, don't bother.

Vista loses me 20fps on CS:S, the drivers just aren't up to scratch yet compared to xp. Give it another 6-12months or so, and it'll have caught up, but right now unless you really need, I'd stick with XP.

Going from 270fps to 20fps because of an operating system is absurd.

He obviously did something wrong... When I installed Vista and my new card there wasn'ta noticeable change in FPS, it did look better though. And that was when I hadn't evne installed drivers and shit yet.

Overall, vista still has quirks that can only be resolved by waiting for drivers to be improved. The majority of people take an fps hit when converting, so right now it's really just not worth it.

Don't buy vista for at least half a year, that way by then it will be much less buggy. Same with DX10 graphics cards-wait till the second generation.

Down 240 fps because of vista? I don't think so.

well, im not saying Vista is directly responcable for the drop in fps but, we had a lan night bout 3 days before he made the switch and i saw the before and after, what was 270 is now 30. being that PCs can be so fussy, this could be not remotely Vistas fault. i think he has DirectX10 now, dont kno if i can use DX10 tho, i have a Nvid GeForce 7900GTX, not sure if that suports DX10. he has a slightly beter spec than me.

thanks for the posts

only the 8series cards support dx10, yours won't.

As already said, wait a while before getting vista, so that manufacturers can catch up with the driver software for it.

Regarding Vista issues , I`m just starting to play STALKER, and it seems to run fine on my PC on max detail at 1600x1050. I`ve heard alot of people have trouble running it - I read of someone with a similar setup to mine ( e6600 and 8800GTX ) and he could only get it playable on medium.
I had to do a few patches to the .exe and increase my virtual memory ( even though I have 4Gb of RAM ) to get it running on Vista. It kept crashing when you try to save, apparently the way the program is written it cant see more than 2Gb no matter what. The patches and OS tweak fix it.

I had to increase my virtual memory too - but since then it has been 100% fine.
Even if youre not running Vista it should still fix your crashing.
Give it a go.............

thanks for the help, but i have been checkin out how well my Graphics card will work with Vista and DX10, and Teknobry was right when he said. . . .. .

only the 8series cards support dx10, yours won't

trying to run Vista and play games with DX9 will make it harder for my computer, it would no doubt make stuff run alot slower. so i guess i will see what the prices are like for 8 series cards in erly 08. or run it like i run games now, which i aint to pleased with, cant run STALKER or Armed Assault on full, im the kind of person who will be upset if i paid alot for a PC and a few months down the line it cant run games like i want. curse of the PC industry. . it moves way to fast!

did anyone get Vista and DX10 to improve there PC performace for games?

it seemed apealing to me for a while.

I built my setup in May when I had the spare money, all ready for Crysis. But then that got put back to November. Then L4D got put back too.
The only imminent game thats going to give me an eye candy explosion for my new PC is Bioshock! Luckily thats had excellent reviews, so it should keep me happy till Crysis.
And Crysis should keep me occupied till L4D, then I wont need any other game!

The unexpected loss of in-game performance in CoD 2 has nothing to do with Vista. Let me explain.
CoD2 supports two DirectX versions; DX7 and 9. I can run DX7 at an average framerate of 170+, but on Dx9, I get 40 or less (I'm using an 8800GTS and Vista).
Basically, your friend's CoD2 is configured to utilize Dx9 software. This implies that his hardware did indeed change when the transition took place, as I suspected; his new card defaults to Dx9.

Same. E6600 2.4ghz and 2gb of ram. Any performance drops I've seen have been minor.

My and my friends have given vista a fair go and have concluded that it causes more trouble than it is worth. Until they get their numerous problems ironed out, I'm sticking with XP no matter how 'primative' it seems by comparison.

Microsoft have recently released two patches for Vista that are supposed to deal with reliability and compatibility. Search their site for KB938194 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=AE2F819D-C33D-48DB-A7E3-62EEF7C1F7C2&displaylang=en) and KB938979 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=3fb80bb9-d832-425b-b42c-d3eb2071bbec&DisplayLang=en)

I`m just trying them now, dont know if I`ll notice any difference.

As far as gamers are concerned, Vista is a superior OS. Here is why:

Vista gives me vastly superior memory management, superior multi-core support, the first 64bit Windows worth owning, and DX10. Additionally, nVidia and DAAMIT (AMD/ATI) are focusing their support and development teams on Vista drivers.

The only thing people need to be careful about is there ram. Gamers should have *no less* than 2gb of ram.

As far as my experience with Vista goes, I have Vista Ultimate x64 on my gaming machine (E6600, 8800GTX, 2gb Corsair Dominator) and Vista Business on my laptop. I have never had any issues and generally get equal or better performance. Also, my parents have Vista Business on their home computer and they love it and have never had any Vista related issues.

You're right, Vista is superior, but it's still plagued by its infancy and lack of decent drivers.

Vista is a better operating system, its just the driver support is inferior at the moment.

I see a 20fps loss on CSS when using vista compared to XP, but am sure thats down to badly supported graphics card drivers.

probably stay with XP until computers get terrabytes of RAM, besides XP works fine, and Vista takes 2 much to run

I haven't been able to run Bioshock on my Vista laptop, but apparently it has to do with the NVidia drivers having compatibility issues with the fact that mine is a laptop card.

In any case, I've tried a myriad of solutions from the 2K Games tech forums to no avail! The game is now only gathering dust.

Gaming laptops are for games :p

My dual core XPS with 7950GTX 512mb g/card blasts through bioshock no problem, plays crysis on medium settings and runs portal on 1920x1200 resolution with everything on max.

I have an ASUS G2, which is a duo core with a T7500 @ 2.2GHz, running Vista 32-bit.

Thus far, it's only given me trouble with Bioshock.

"We weren't quite sure that the aging 512MB Mobility Radeon X1700 in the G2, therefore, would be up to the task. It's basically a clock-tweaked Radeon X1600, so it has only 12 pixel processors - half the number of the mediocre Radeon X1650XT, the card that finished at the bottom of last month's mid-range graphics Labs test. "

oh dear.
