[Somone stop me if it's impossible to mod L4D, but I think I'm going to try and pull it off.]

Alright... I can't watch something without wanting to change it and go "OH! I could totally do <insert idea here> with <insert game engine here>".

So, I was thinking on L4D it's a super "co-op or die" type of game, and wouldn't it be cool to have a resident evil mod?

Zombies + Team based gameplay = Screaming "Resident Evil"

Now, these are just minor ideas that my brain is crapping out that will probably get nowhere. I've modelled, skinned, mapped, modded, designed, textured, and orchestrated... (Yes... Orchestrated... I'm a pansy, shoot me.) Which means I could totally devout my time to my newborn and a L4D mod project.

But in all honesty, how interested would you guys be if I devoted a project to a Resident Evil based mod? Basic ideas formed as:

Four members could be re-modelled and could play as the U.B.C.S. (Umbrella Biohazard Counter-measure Service. Think HUNK)
Don't know about weapons yet, but the zombies obviously would be badass.

Bosses could be changed into

Tank - Tyrant
Boomer - (Not sure for this one. I think it might be feasable to have a zombie like this in the RE universe)
Smoker - (Not quite sure for this one. The tongue thing screams "Licker" though)
Hunter - Hunter (The amphibian-reptile looking creature found in almost all RE games)
Witch - Lisa Trevor (Found only in the Resident Evil Remake for the GC as the badass female zombie)

Just my thought. I think it'd be badass to be running around as UBCS team members sweeping a city trying to make it out alive. Instead of being "immune" to the virus, you're simply trying to make it out because they other squads got decimated by the viral carriers.

Discuss, criticize, praise, and give input. I may try to do something like this if you guys don't beat me up :(

(And don't yell at me for the game not being released. I know, and I know a lot of things probably can't be pulled off, which is why I say this is merely a possibility.)

I guess it's quite possible that L4D will be 'modable' like most Valve games. At least you can expect to create custom maps.

make a l4d mod for another game
Creating a good mod takes years, so it's a good idea to create a storyline even before L4D is released ;).

I like RE too, but there are already a few RE-mods or they are in development...

released:
- Resident Evil: Cold Blood (HL1)
http://www.xenoverse.net/coldblood/
- Sven-Coop (HL1) RE mod-in-a-mod
www.svencoop.com (http://www.svencoop.com)

development:
- RE: Antidote (HL2)
http://www.antidote.nm.ru/main_eng.html
-RE: Twilight (HL2)

... I rather like to see a conversion of L4D and RPG-Elements (like in Deus-Ex).

I will restrain from placing a plastic bag over your head while you sleep :P

And most mods don't take years to complete. They usually take a single year to release a playtest beta for the community to go "fix this and this and this and this".

After that, a few months, if that.

I would like to see a L4D mod similar to that of the CSS zombie mod, but just more polished.

L4D> RE

Only crap mods take a year, no decent TC has ever been done in a year.

Well if you honestly think about it, L4D has a short simple story. It wouldn't take much to turn L4D into something almost totally different.

And yes, L4D > RE in my eyes in terms of gameplay. Concept of RE = Awesome.

And I doubt it would be a TC. Change a few skins, models, so on so forth. A really good model can be done in two weeks, or I know of one guy personally who made a few good models for CS:S. He made me a UBCS team. [Can we tell I like RE yet?] He said he would undoubtedly help.

Point being you don't have to TC this game to make it different. I'm simply talking about giving it an RE feel. For all that matters you could re-model/skin and change the hitboxes of let's say, uh, the tank into the tyrant. It wouldn't be that hard. I mean if it got somewhere then I might actually take time out of my life and go with it and start making some maps and more different zombie skins, etc etc etc.

This sounds like a good idea. I would be a lot more likely to play regular L4D, but I would at least give this a try if it's ever released. The idea of playing as RE bosses, or coop against them, sounds cool so long as you keep the infected fast.

If none of your modding/mapping/etc. experience is with HL2 I recommend tinkering around with the regular HL2 modding tools sometime. The L4D tools shouldn't differ too much from them with it being on the same, albeit updated, game engine.

Usually I would caution you about basing it on a current game, in case you were sent a cease and desist or whatever for copyright infringement. But I've seen so many RE mod's in the past that hopefully, that wont wind up being a problem. Unless they decide RE coop mod + fast zombies = some form of competition for RE5.

And most mods don't take years to complete
Most take less than a year, because most mods don't differ much from the original game, are full of bugs or just boring.
To make a decent mod you need to:
- have a team of 5+ experienced people working in their free time on the project (unless you have funds)
- building maps
- creating player models (4 survivors, 5 boss monster, 1-x zombies)
- creating weapon models (so far 1 pistol, 2 shotguns, 2 rifles, 2 smgs/assault rifles, 2 bombs)
- disigning objects (e.g. cars)
- making new textures
- making new sounds
- making a HUD, crosshairs, menu

and eventually
- scripting mission objectives

I really like the idea of modding L4D, but I doubt there will be many people willing to work on a mod when L4D is released ... I rather think they won't have much time besides playing the original game =).

If you haven't noticed [Not sarcasm], for the most part Im basing it off the GameCube remake. I could re-skin or simply re-do the skin color of the infected into a more reddish tone. Wikipedia a "Resident Evil Crimson Head"... Nasty bastards.

Wouldn't get too much of a complaint about RE:5. They have their hands full with people screaming the game is racist because you shoot black people...

As for the mod:

what does this have to do with them being slow?

Crimson heads:

If you shoot a zombie and don't remove the head or burn the body in the original, they get back up as a "crimson head". In short they are a 28 Days Later zombie variety. The literal developer's description of them was "Death on wheels".

They had long claws, and ran VERY fast. Anyone that has played the game can tell you if you didn't have anything short of a shotgun or magnum, they would almost always kill you. They're rediculously fast [I must repeat this, because it's almost unfair in an RE game having a fast enemy], and have long claws. I could deal without the claws, but it would be badass to see crimson heads running about.

If you haven't played the GC remake, do so!

THen dont... its a stupid idea if its not a TC. Look up the term before deciding on what you want. Reskins and that hash is crap... I mean, why in hell would I download that when I can download seperate reskins, new models and various plug-ins to do the same thing...

Now if it was a TC... with fresh new animations, maps, MODELS and not only skins... new mechanics and weapons (again not reskins) that would be worth a download. Otherwise it wouldn't for me... I'd just play L4D...

Not to mention... For the AI to work, you'd need to do completely new AI mapping waypoints/spawnpoints for all maps that are randomized and less predictable... I assume your talknig about the slow zombies? In which case the AI Director, if you plan to use it cant spawn it outside the map and have them run in... Unless your up to the challenging feat of spawning all the zombies at game start and just have people mow through them.

As for bosses... Combine the Hunter and Smoker into the Licker... (again thats what a TC would include)

Pfft.. you dont get it.. if you want a game to be Resident Evil mod, you should have it in the Resident Evil universe, if you want to do that complete and right, as well as do justice to RE, it would be a TC.

OTHERWISE, why not just call it Zombie Hell or something?

It certainly would be an interesting project, though I for one have no idea how mod-able L4D will be, out of the box.

I'll be too busy playing vanilla L4D to concern myself w/ mods (at least at first). But anything RE related is fine by me!

At the moment, I'd be content to find a decent CS z-mod server or a ZM game not brimming with cocksmiths. =)
