I LOVE (LOOOOOVE) L4D and I play it all the time, but I am really getting sick to death of the in-game racist jokes and commentary regarding Louis. What century is this again???

It's sad that I keep having to quit games or remove "friends" because that sort of behavior makes me very uncomfortable.

I don't mind the whole "Hey you're Louis, you're going to get your arse handed to you" or anything stipulating that it's "always the black guy who dies first". It's a joke based on the predictability of Hollywood somehow always killing off the black guy and that kind of joke isn't limited to the inernet - For example I remember an occurrence of it on "Scrubs" a while back.

If it's actually real racist jokes, as in something that could be considered offensive then yeah, cut that crap out. Personally I haven't encountered it in Left 4 Dead.

My personal slogan has become GRABBIN PEELS every time I play because I always play Louis- some might interpret this as a racist joke, but it isn't at all. It's a joke based on how he speaks, just like if someone else said something funny I would make fun of them.

It depends on the severity of the joke. Like Try said, "The black guy always dies first" would be a reference to Hollywood always mysteriously killing the black guy first. But when you throw in the N word or other things related, that's a bit too far.

Listen, I'm a big free-speech guy (and I'm perfectly fine with the "black guy dies first" jokes or funny comments about some of the things he says, etc., but there is a stigma about the use of THAT particular word and it's just a sensitivity issue. The people using those words don't think for a second that the people they're playing with might also be black. There's just this assumption that those comments are perfectly acceptable because L4D (and games like it) have generated a realm of anonymity where they can hide behind their screen name.

The word "nigger" brings with it a history of using the word to oppress a group of people. It's still a venomous word used to put down black people. When you use racial epithets geared toward the "dominant" race in America (i.e., light-skinned, white Americans), there is less of an effect there because often you can distance yourself from "cracker" and "redneck" and simply state that that's not me, I'm not a redneck/cracker. There's no history and there's no relevance. It's difficult to put down people who happen to be lucky enough to be in a group that implicitly enjoys the benefits of being white, conspicuous or not.

This is NOT to say that all white people in America and abroad enjoy a privileged, worry-free existence. It's one aspect of your life that you happen to have passive membership. We all have aspects of our life that can be categorized as an "oppressed" group. If you can relate to people through this, I believe that people would understand what it means to be oppressed for something you can't change in your life and how inherently unfair it is.

I think this is a good way to get this out of our systems and solve the problem.
