View Full Version : Impossible to finish a versus match lately?

Ace

this past week, whenever someone drops out of a game, their spot almost never gets filled. out of all the matches I've played lately, we get about 2~ maps into it before we give up and remake a lobby because people drop out here and there and no new people join..

I don't even expect to finish the matches I start anymore :(

I feel your pain. I always start a lobby with a few friends, usually 4. Then we pick a Survivor, so ppl will play because everyone wants to start as Infected. Then we play one or two maps, then everyone ragequits and no one joins. I've had the most problems with BH. NM, we usually get reconnects. But it sucks balls when you have to tell your mates to lay off and give them a break to keep them from raging.

Thats why I make a point of adding all the people I have fun playing with onto my steam friends list, if I join a random vs match it sometimes doesn't finish but I usually play with friends so its not too bad.

One strange thing I have noticed though is that you can't seem to find a Vs dedicated server from the lobby on a sunday evening, it's mental it took me nearly an hour to get a match going last night! (pc)

I normally get a team of 4, including myself, and then set up a pub but on average at least 3 people leave during the first stage of the ass kicking. I blame it on Steam and the fucking sale on L4D... I don't know how many people I've seen getting the "Burn the Witch" and "Big Drag" Achievement just in the last week.

Hey its the seasoned players job to show the newbies the ropes and good sportsmanship. Ive been joining pub matches in the middle of them but its generally at a very odd time, so Im apparently playing with out of states people a lot recently. The most quitting Ive seen is still due to lack of communication or glitches.

my matches usually finish, but with completely different people.

and NO, it's not our job to babysit newbies. good sportsmanship doesn't exist on the internet, and especially in competitive games. kill or be killed, etc.. basically, a newbie is a newbie until he stops getting bullied around, kicked and abused for sucking. our job is to provide the quickest means for him to realize he sucks, which we do remarkably well.

btw, my server runs into this problem where people stop joining. it'll replace people in mere seconds most of the time, but sometimes there's very long stretches where no one joins. pretty sure it's just another matchmaking bug.

its good to see new people coming in. its bad to see them ask questions that should have been answered in single player. you want a sandbox go to singleplayer.

it is funny to see how amazed the newbies get when you go thru 3 levels on normal without a scratch, while they've been incapped multiple times.

Im sure the rest of society does that, you dont need to help.

I haven't played Left 4 Dead for weeks because of the rage quitters. I don't even expect the versus matches to finish, unless there is atleast 3 people on the opposing team in the third map.

I was on a server last night with my bro and a guy i think was called kennor except for us and a guy on the other team called dan everyone kept quitting we had about 9 guys play as francis on our team and anyway we did awesome we played as survivors and completed each level without losing anyone they did the opposite and when we had just won the finale we were celebrating and then they shut the server down before we could see the score or they could try to complete the finale

this was annoying as overall our score would have been 7000+ which would have been my best score this is mostly because i don't usually play a game to the end

That's why I play with clan mates - we have more than enough members to get 2 4v4 games going on 'training' nights, and pretty much always 8 of us online.

If people /ragequit in a game involving Joe Public we just open up the steam friends list and start sending out invites to clan mates to fill their spots.

Advantage of having 70 L4D players spread across TAW I guess :)

Gotta love them, i get a warm fuzzy feeling when we (team) make a mommy's boys cry and make them leave the game as it would change the fact they suck *bleep*. Muahahahaahahaaha!

Though I enjoy making someone Rage Quit, it saddens me when it happens. Partly due to the fact that, as you stated, the spots never seem to fill again. It's rare when me and my friends get a match where everyone stays.

These problems will be fixing when the update comes out this spring. Along with the SDK you are getting the two campaigns added onto vs mode, and there is going to be a matchmaking system added into multiplayer. I assume that means it will help match experienced players together and newbies together. Oh, and also. Speaking of words that got played out in the first 5 minutes.... STOP SAYING RAGE QUIT!!! YOU SOUND FUCKING STUPID!!!! I'd seriously rather hear people start to say RUBBER BABY BUGGY BUMPER!

I have a Gamebattles team. We play for fun, but it's REALLY difficult to finish an entire campaign because people ALWAYS quit. I guess they just give up after the second or third level. And when we do finish it's NEVER with the same people that started. Well, it's rare anyway. And it's usually just one guy that stuck around.

We'll do our best as Survivors every game, but we've actually begun to back off a bit while we're Infected. Apparently ragequitting happens a lot when three of the four survivors get incapped just outside the starting Saferoom. So we'll incap one or two, let them pick them up and keep moving so that they'll feel they're not doing quite so bad and won't quit.

On a related note, sometimes if they leave a survivor assuming it's not worth the risk to go back and get them, we'll pick the Survivor up for them as the Infected and let them catch up. Although we can't hear their conversation, I'm sure they're hilariously confused when they see a Tank help a Survivor up and then run away from them.

I really can't enjoy vs anymore. Seems like every time I join, I get the team of elitist assholes who tear apart my every move. If I fired 3 rounds from the pistols, I should've shot 4. If I went right, I should've gone left. Or I get stuck with people who can't play. It's not bad if you're new. You've got to learn sometimes and everyone starts out that way. But when you consistently make mistakes, run way ahead, or lag behind, it gets old having to go save their ass.

Another situation I run across is "The Dictator", which I know everyone here has dealt with. Last night, game just starts and some guy is telling everyone where to go and what to do. After about a minute, he keeps yelling at everyone else "You haven't done any damage, you haven't done any damage". I think I had like 36 damage and he had 8, but that was only the first minute. It takes a little more than that. I wanted to vote kick him, but I guess they were friends. After that, they decided hurling insults at me was the route to take. I don't like quitting games, but when it comes to that, I don't stoop to their level, nor do I wait to be kicked. All you can do is quit and go rate them down.

In the elitist situation, I really try to do what they want so I can just play. I just want to play a game and have a good time. But when people are taking this like it's some real world serious business or when they don't know when to just be quiet and play, it's not fun for me anymore. I usually end up kicked either way. I just want to have a good time. Win or lose.

I had the other 3 ppl on my team RQ after nm2, the other team up 1500 pts. It was a blessing in disguise. I asked the other team to not leave the safe room until at least 2 more ppl joined, and they agreed. Two people from my friends list and another joined moments later, and we salvaged one hell of a verses round out of it. We all survived the finale, and managed to kill them on the helipad as the chopper was waiting for them to get in. We thought we had won, but we actually lost by only 8 pts!

As far as noobies vs veterans of the game, it's not fair to get mad at someone FOR sucking, but it's okay to get annoyed by them sucking, as long as you provide constructive criticism as opposed to just telling them how bad they suck.

As far as people making plans, idc, so long as they're not mean about it, and open to suggestion. I prefer someone a little bossy compared to someone who doesn't communicate at all.

OK, this is kinda me. But that's just because i like to move move move, and one person coordinating a plan is better then just guessing how the team will move. I'm always open to suggestions though and even if the plan is a bad one i'll usually go along with it for the off chance that it will work, and if it dosn't i don't get mad but next time we're doing it my way.

I'm pretty sure this is a bug. Have you ever created a lobby and had nobody join? The same thing happens to games in progress where nobody joins.

Hopefully it will be fixed.

Ragequits are a completely different issue.

Officer Poodles
02-23-2009, 02:46 PM
I think when it comes to lobbies and games in progress, the game will direct people to the most full one first. Technically, if you're the only one in a lobby, you may never see anyone else due to people quitting other games. Then other people will be directed to those games and your game is bypassed.

I don't mind when people suggest a course of action. But I don't like it when I'm told exactly where to be and when. So if someone says "That roof would be a good place to grab someone." I don't mind. But when they tell you which part, which survivor, when to do it, etc, I don't like that. In a game like this, the situations can change pretty quick. I like general instructions, but leave the fine work up to me since I'm the one who's going to see it.

Please realize what kind of game you're playing.

This isn't CS, you're ONLY as good as the worst person on your team. No ONE person can carry in L4D, everyone has to rely on someone else. This is a TEAM game.

Not everybody is going to know everything about the game, and the sooner you realize that, the more fun you'll have in pubs.

Don't boss people around, give them suggestions and they will probably listen to them. You can't just kick somebody when they've made an honest mistake.

Sometimes its good to be the newbie. Youd be surprised how many people dont know how much your game can improve with the practice of sound advice. Not everyone is great at everything when they first start off and who knows, that newbie you once knew may teach you something or become a great team player later down the road because you werent a complete ass to them.

So many times I've come across them in versus. -.- Does my head in.
There was one who decided to laugh at me and leave me behind when it was just him and me left. My health was red and the ass had a health kit too. I was managing by myself against the infected but after a while I heard him yell in terror and start making his way back to me.
Turns out he found a tank >)
After they killed him I think the Special took pity on me, they helped me through and picked me up from being incapped even though the game was finished.

Most parents are more interested in what can keep their kids out of their hairs rather than whats good for them and we end up paying the price having to practically babysit them online and then games take the heat when some kid does something stupid because of lack of actual parenting.

Oh well, anyway, lucky you. Id always like to work at a game store, even if it was a temporary job. I find it enjoyable to help people find a game theyd like.

I can only assume if you enjoy games then its only natural that youd follow them, even on your spare time. Im not a big fan of people trying to sell a game when they clearly dont know anything about it. I sometimes let them feed me some nice long BS about how great a new game is, and then ask them some in depth question that he couldnt answer with his vast knowledge of reading the box and looking at the pretty pictures. Just to watch them put that "deer in front of headlights" look. I would be nice to see some people who actually cared about their jobs, part time or not.
