Chapter Two - Crossroads
Lauren watched helplessly as the shadow raced across the backyard and ran straight towards her. She dropped to her knees in helplessness and was overcome with the need to sob uncontrollably. And in what she expected to be her last living moments, the figure leapt through the kitchen window straight over her.
The glass shattered inward and the black clad figure all but flew over her head. It landed, did an incredible combat roll up onto one knee and then boom!. A shot rung out. A gunshot. Right as an infected rounded the corner and entered the kitchen, its chest exploded in a spray of red.
A hand grabbed Lauren, a strong hand. And before Lauren knew what was going on, she was on her feet running.
Boom, boom, boom, boom.
The infected that stood in their way exploded into chunks as the incredible black-clad figure hauled Lauren back through her living room, toward the front door.
Boom. Another zombie exploded, the last one; it had been standing in the doorway. They vaulted over the corpse and dashed out into the street, the dark figure leading the way. She was working on pure adrenaline right now and she could imagine from the speed that they were running that he was too. They ran down the street aimlessly. The infected were everywhere. Lauren knew that it was bad outside, but she could never have imagined this. It was almost post apocalyptic.
The infected climbed desperately over fences, leapt over vehicles and off of buildings to get to them. But Lauren and her mysterious savior kept running. Lauren looked backward, over her shoulder. She could've swore she saw something leaping, no, it had to be flying through the air. It couldn't have been one of them, nothing could jump that high... Could it?
Lauren continued to run. Her legs were growing tired. Even adrenaline can take you only so far. Lauren looked up ahead and saw crossroads. An intersection with a large building on the corner; the public library. "Over here!" someone yelled from the building. "-ed States Marine Corps!". Suddenly, a light, from a torch flickered on top of the building. As Lauren got closer she could see the source of the voice - a woman, in a white uniform, standing on top of the building.
The voice came again, closer this time. "Over here! We're United States Marine Corps!"
The man that was leading her saw the light and led Lauren in the direction of the building. They ran hard, and as they got closer a door swung open on the lower floor. Lauren and her hero made for the open door, the footsteps of the infected were getting closer, but Lauren could tell, they were going to make it!
Then the unimaginable happened. From somewhere in the crowd behind them, a long whip-like tongue flew over Lauren's shoulder and grabbed hold of the man in front of her. In a violent jerking motion it hauled him off his feet, backwards, toward the crowd of zombies!
Lauren looked backward and at that moment all hell broke loose. Heavy machine gun fire rained out from the rooftop where the woman with the flashlight had been standing. The tongue from the unseen creature snapped off, sawed in half by a row of machine gun bullets, leaving the black clad hero on his back, half way between Lauren and the crowd of infected! Not only that, but a massive, fat, deadly looking creature was pushing it's way through the crowd of zombies toward him!
"Go! Get inside!" The man yelled, to Lauren, still lying on his back. She obeyed immediately. She ran back toward the open door. As she did, she saw the second Marine; he was standing in the doorway, holding it open. The minute she ran through the threshold he took off running, toward the black clad hero and toward the zombies!
The machine gun fire raked over the crowd of zombies, dropping some, wounding others, ultimately slowing them down. The Marine charged out, his Uzi spraying, dropping stragglers that made it through the onslaught of machine gun fire. After a few seconds his weapon went dry, so he reloaded it while he ran.
He got to the black clad figure and heaved him to his feet, then the two men stood side by side blasting away at the crowd of incoming infected. The machine gun fire helped considerably as they backed quickly toward the doorway of the building. The first shotgun shell blasted the fat monster standing in the middle of the crowd. It exploded like a bomb, blasting several other infected off their feet and some high up into the air. After the second shot, the shotgun was empty, but he slung it over his shoulder and pulled out a pistol and started blasting away at the pack.
The Marine now took slow deliberate shots with his Uzi. Each one hit it's mark, dropping the zombies quickly and effectively. Lauren was impressed at his calm under such intense pressure. Slowly, the horde dwindled away, until finally, the Marine blasted the final zombie off its feet. The two men looked at each other in silent acknowledgment and expressed an unsaid thank you by a slight nod.
They turned back toward the structure only to see two dozen more zombies closing in on the library from every direction. The Marine saw them first; "Oh son of a bitch."
