Chapter Five - The Hunted

Victoria whipped around and scanned the rooftop behind her. The low pitch growling sound she heard had made her heart leap up into her throat. Get a grip Victoria, nothing could've got up here, it was probably your imagination. Despite her logical assurances, the knot in her stomach did not ease.

"Who's back there?" Victoria called into the shadows.

"Uh... Me?" A reluctant voice answered from inside the library at the bottom of the stairwell. Victoria realized her mistake and chuckled to herself. It must've been something that the girl had done that had made the sound. "Is that ok?" The girl added. Obviously wondering whether she had done something wrong.

"Yeah. Yeah, it's fine. You just stay safe." Victoria turned back to her mounted machine gun and tossed aside the expended magazine. The last short string of bullets hung out of the machine gun, an FN M249 and less than thirty were left.

Victoria unlocked the gun and loaded a new strip of bullets from a fresh magazine - the last one. "Are there any more dark green boxes down there?" Victoria yelled down the stairs of the library.

"Yeah," the soft voice echoed back up the stairwell.

"Bring a few more up, I'm nearly out of ammo up here."

"Okay."

Suddenly, Victoria heard another sound, a sound like foot falls clapping against concrete roof. She turned in the direction of the sound again - nothing. Just a bare wall.

Victoria shook away the thought, returned to the machine gun and looked toward the Humvee. She could see that the vehicle was still covered with blood and that the windscreen wipers were smearing it every which way, trying to get a better view of the battlefield and library. Victoria could see movement in the vehicle, but at such a long range she could not see the warning signs that they were trying to give her. If only I had binoculars. Victoria thought.

If only she had binoculars she might have seen that Charlie and Sarge were pointing. Pointing at a zombie that was standing right behind her.

Lauren carried a crate of magazines up the library stairwell. The crates, being stocked full of 5.56x45mm ammunition were extremely heavy for a girl of Lauren's slight build. Lauren was no more than half way up the stairs when she heard a roar, followed closely by a scream. Lauren dropped the crates of ammunition where she stood and ran up the stairs to the roof, where she saw the female Marine being hacked and slashed at by a rabid man, that had pinned her to the ground.

"Help me!" The struggling Marine yelled from the ground. Lauren looked around desperately for a weapon and saw nothing but the mounted machine gun. Useless. After a second she saw the short string of bullets laying discarded on the ground.

Lauren grabbed the string of bullets then whipped it across the back of the flailing infected. It wailed in shock, howling at the sky like a wolf. In that moment, Lauren wrapped the chain of bullets around the exposed neck of the infected man and heaved him off Victoria.

Victoria, still on the ground, struggled to regain her composure. She unbuckled her pistol and took aim toward Lauren and the infected man. "Get back!" Victoria yelled. Lauren didn't need the warning, the second she saw the gun she leapt clear of the infected man, leaving him standing alone, completely exposed.

Blam! Blam! Blam! Blam!

The first three bullets ripped red holes in the infected man's chest. The last shot hit him in the head and the back of his skull exploded. The whiplash effect from the last shot sent the infected toppling over onto the ground with a bloody splat.

Lauren pushed herself up off the ground and hobbled over to Victoria. The leap had caused her to graze her knees and elbows, but otherwise she was ok. Victoria however was less lucky.

The initial attack had cut Victoria's left arm and her right leg had been harshly bruised. Lauren helped Victoria to her feet, who hobbled back over to the machine gun mount and waved toward the Humvee, signaling that she was ok.

Charlie heaved a sigh of relief, his partner was ok. Now for the next obstacle. How were they going to get back inside the library?

"Now what?"asked Sarge; the obvious question.

"I was just thinking the same thing." Charlie answered, narrowing his eyes at the library. Despite the horde that broke off and chased them, the building was still completely surrounded. There was no way that they could open the door without letting the infected swarm in.

Suddenly, Charlie saw Victoria and Lauren start waving desperately on the rooftop. "What are they waving for?" Charlie thought aloud.

"Looks like we've got company." Sarge answered, adjusting the rear view mirror so that Charlie could see.

Approaching from behind was a wall of infected, running at their vehicle. "Hol-ee shit." Said Charlie. "We won't have enough ammo for that."

"Definitely not," said Sarge, adjusting the mirror back and strapping on his seatbelt.

"We need to get Victoria and that girl and get the hell out of here." Charlie began, "Got any ideas?"

"Yeah," Sarge answered while adjusting his seat, "Buckle up."
