Left 4 Dead Fan Fiction
A Prelude to Left 4 Dead
by Element118
She's dead.
Tears slowly streamed down Zoey's cheeks. The police car had outrun the mob that was chasing them, and now that she was no longer in immediate danger, she allowed the truth to hit her.
Mom's dead...
Her eyes burned as she did her best to keep from bursting into heart-wrenching sobs. She wiped away the tears with one hand while rubbing her right knee with the other. When she was fighting to get away from that monster in the car, she banged up her legs and was now starting to feel the bruises with the adrenaline waning.
"Where we going?" the black man next to her asked the police officers up front. Just then, she realized she hadn't thanked him for saving her life.
"We're heading to the station," the driver replied. That made Zoey feel a little better. If there was anywhere that'd be safe, it'd be the police station.
The other officer picked up the radio and went to switch it on. As soon as the switch flipped to on, a cacophony of voices bleated through the speaker
"..crackle...we've got four officers dow...crackle...we need backup on...crackle...street...."
"Dispatch!...crackle...dispatch, we need an ambulance on 53rd near the Memorial Highschool!...crackle"
"All cars please report...crackle...the situation...crackle..."
"Oh my God! Someone please answ...crackle...me!"
The officer with the radio pressed the transmit button on his speaker, and all the other chatter went mute as he spoke into it.
"This is car unit 346, do you read dispatch!" As soon as he released the transmit button, the unintelligible chatter began again. After a couple more failed attempts, the officer let out a frustrated growl and turned the radio off.
"This is a nightmare," he said. The driving cop remained silent, scanning ahead of them as he drove.
"What is going on?" Louis asked next to her. She turned to the police officers awaiting an answer.
"We've got no idea," the chubby one replied. "We were on patrol when we got a call from dispatch explaining that there was some rioting going on at the hospital on Yackley Ave. and that things were getting out of control.
"We were to head to the area and calm things down until the riot squad could get there. But on the way, we witnessed an accident and figured we'd stop to make sure everyone was alright."
The officer stopped for a second, catching his breath. He had been talking rather rapidly.
"We had no idea what we were walking into," he continued. "Everyone in one of the cars was dead, a woman and a man. The other car's driver was flailing around hysterically, and we were worried he had been injured. Dave went back to the car to call an ambulance." The officer nodded towards his partner who was driving.
"I went to try and do whatever I could for the man. But as I got closer, I could tell he wasn't in his right mind. His eyes were cloudy and his skin had turned extremely pale. The news had shown pictures off the people who had been infected with the Aggressive virus thing. I knew he had it. So I kept my distance."
The other officer added to the story. "When I called in for the ambulance, Dispatch informed me that all ambulances in the area were unavailable. I knew right then something was wrong."
"Dave told me about the ambulance," The chubbier officer continued. "And I looked back to the man just in time to see him roll out of the car window. I pulled out my pistol and commanded him to stay where he was." He closed his eyes and rested his head against the seat's head cushion.
"He didn't stop, I had to shoot him," he said softly. "There was nothing else I could've done."
"After that, we decided to continue to the hospital and figure out what was going on," the driving officer named Dave said. "Along the way, we ran into that slaughter where we found you two. After seeing that, there's no way we're going to that hospital."
"My God..." Louis whispered after a short pause. Zoey could hardly believe it either. It was as if the entire city had gone crazy. She was worried about her father, and wished she had held onto her purse during her escape. She could've used her cell phone.
Louis turned to her just then. "Are you alright?" he asked. She stared at him for a moment, then nodded. Tears were still slowly running down her cheeks.
"I'm, uhh..." Louis began uncomfortably. "I'm sorry about what happened to that person who was in the car with you. Was she family?"
Zoey nodded, fighting back fresh tears. Louis appeared to notice her struggle, and said no more about it. She looked out the window as everyone in the car went silent. Things looked normal outside despite the fact that they appeared to be the only car on the streets. There was no signs of any of those monsters nor any car crashes. Maybe this thing was isolated, and everything would be ok soon.
A second later, she felt she spoke too soon.
"What the hell is this?" the driving officer hissed. In front of them, there was a traffic jam all the way up the street until it came to a T-Junction about five blocks further. The officer turned the squad car right at the intersection right before the blockade of cars began. He had to step on the brakes, however, for the same traffic was blocking that way as well. Looking behind them, Zoey saw that every street was riddled with cars. People were still in them, blaring their horns as if it'd help.
The officer let out a frustrated sigh. The car had its sirens on, but they didn't help. Each car was packed in so tight that there was no where for them to move out of the way. They sat there for a few minutes, the officers talking with each other about how to get around the traffic by some other route. Finally, they appeared to agree on another route, and the driving officer began to back out through the intersection they had just come from.
"We're gunna turn around and go all the way back to Rickert Dr.," the driver said. "Hopefully we'll be able to..."
He stopped talking and the car began to slowly decelerate as his eyes went wide. Zoey turned in her seat to see what he was looking at.
Behind them, a mob of those monsters was sprinting their way, closing fast.
"Oh my God," she whimpered.
"Did those things follow us from before?!" Louis cried. "How in the hell did they follow us?!"
Zoey heard the officers open their car doors and just then realized they had stopped.
"Get out!" the chubby officer said as he opened her door. "We gotta get out of here now!"
She let him pull her out of the back seat and noticed that the other officer had opened the other door for Louis. Her and the chubby officer ran around the front of the car to meet up with the other two.
"Here," the officer named Dave said to Louis. He handed him his pistol then leaned into the drivers side and grabbed a shotgun from between the seats. Louis stared at the gun in his hands.
"I've never shot a gun before!" he said, staring at the officer who had handed it to him.
"Just stay with the girl and make sure she doesn't get hurt. Only use it to protect yourselves!" He cocked his shotgun and walked to stand between Louis and Zoey and the infected mob now only a few blocks away.
"Warn the people in their cars!" he cried. "We have to get out of here now!"
All four took off running down the street of bumper to bumper cars...
