IGN Reviews L4D: 9/10 - 11/17/08

There's absolutely no doubt that Left 4 Dead is one of the most social and exciting multiplayer games that we've ever played. It's almost pitch perfect in how it captures the tension and the action of a Hollywood zombie movie. This is an incredible and highly replayable multiplayer experience that's definitely worth checking out, especially if you're looking to prepare yourself for the inevitable zombie apocalypse. Just make sure you bring your friends.

Presentation: 9.5 The movie-style presentation captures the essence of the game perfectly. Valve's typical high production values and attention to detail are obvious.
Graphics: 9.0 The Source Engine isn't as cutting-edge as it used to be, but it still impresses with detailed environments, amazing lighting, and the fact that it can throw zombie hordes at you with ease.
Sound: 9.0 An immersive audio system with plenty of solid voice work and a dynamic music system. You'll learn to dread the sound of a witch crying or a tank approaching.
Gameplay: 9.0 Left 4 Dead is quite possibly the perfect co-op shooter. It's an absolute blast to play with others, though the single-player mode feels a bit hollow.
Lasting Appeal: 9.0 Incredibly replayable and the Versus mode is also fun, but the small number of scenarios may feel limited to many.
OVERALL: 9.0 Outstanding

The Official Xbox Magazine also reviewed L4D and gave it a 95/100, saying:

Left 4 Dead's simplicity offers purity of gameplay - the same reason that gamers keep returning to classic arcade games. Come to think of it, with a handful of levels and unpredictable events happening within them, Left 4 Dead has more in common with "Ms. Pac-Man" than just the eating. It's the same thing over and over - but when simple ingredients are perfectly prepared, what could be a mere snack becomes a feast. This one just happens to be on human flesh.
